I'd certainly be interested in subscribing to somethink like that. However I think the costs and the legal questions would make it impossible for Chris to provide somethink like that. I'd quiet like to see CodeProject - The Book. Then I can read all the interesting articles in the bath and save a fortune on printer paper :-) Michael :-)

  • Sharing resources across projects
    M Michael P Butler

I have a number of MFC applications that use form views to enter data into a database. These all use static lib MFC. I have a number of forms that are needed in more than one application. What is the best way of sharing resources and their associated CFormView derived classes across projects. In the past I've used MFC Extension DLLs but keeping the resource id's in different ranges became a pain. Would one resource DLL for all the applications be a good idea (The apps are all part of one product)? Suggestions? Michael :-)

Four years seems a short amount of time to do what Microsft have attempted. I'm not surprised VS.NET is missing many features we take as key. Of course most of the time was taken trying to convert that Java source code into C#. Sun didn't do much commenting in their code :-D Not to mention the time taken to try and make a decent language out of Visual Basic. ;-) Michael :-)

The cost is certainly worth it for the tools and packages you get. My business couldn't live without it. I can pretty much test on every available Microsoft OS/Application without having to spend a lot of money. Not to mention the benefits of getting the platform sdk and all the other SDK's on one DVD. Saves a lot of downloading time. Michael :-)

I'm thinking about sueing Microsoft over Windows. When Windows came out people didn't want my DOS Windowing C++ library. I'm thinking of sueing because Microsft tied window functionality into Windows :-D Michael :-)

Lack of time to do it possibly. C# and VB.NET are the way we are being hearded to doing .NET GUI's. So if they were cutting features to ship on time, WinForms and C++ would be the first to go. I've heard the rumours that the C++ team are working on it, for the patch release later this year. I feel that VC++.NET was just a holding pattern release, whilst they try and figure out what the future directions for C++/MFC/ATL are. Michael :-)

  • Why doesn't MS put their MS books online?
    M Michael P Butler

There was a time, a long time ago, when Microsoft did include some books on the MSDN CD. Now we only seem to get a couple of chapters. A quote from the October 2002 MSDN We try to publish books in their entirety whenever possible. (You will find titles of complete books listed in the Books node in the Library table of contents.) However, because of publisher or author restrictions, we sometimes are able to publish only selected portions of books. In making our decision to publish a partial book, we follow two criteria: MSDN developers must read the book critically and give it a positive review, and then MSDN developers must determine that the portion of the book that we publish has value in and of itself, as stand-alone content. Michael :-)

I'd use VB and ADO for the Client/Server and Win CE applications. I'd use VBScript and ADO for the web side. If you use stored procedures on the database side then you should be able to re-use the vast majority of your code across the three platforms. .NET may make the job easier but the Win CE tools and framework aren't yet available. Michael :-)

Have a look here for the button styles http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/vclib/html/_mfc_Button_Styles.asp the edit styles should be around the msdn site somewhere. so a search for "ES_" Michael :-)

.NET will make writing a common standalone/web app easier but it won't work for palm pilots as that isn't a supported .NET platform. A lot depends on what application you are going to write. Currently I use ATL/COM with ASP (web) and MFC (standalone windows app). The COM components containing the code that both applications require. Michael :-)

Have a look at the fax stuff in the platform SDK. I think Win 2000 is needed though. http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/fax/faxabout_18s3.asp Michael :-)
