  • Another severed foot found in Canada. Six and counting
    M MikMit

Based on combinatorial math, that would be a minimum of 3 people and a maximum of six, provided the assumption that ALL people have two feet. Given the fact that some people may only have one foot, we're still stuck with a maximum of six. If we start working with the idea that some people have no feet, we get a Divide By Zero error. However, statistically, the number of people in a given population with no feet could still theoretically provide us with a maximum assuming the population is North America. This could be further limited by the reports of missing persons with no feet. Obviously, the feet found would be included in the set of people with at least one foot. If we use the union of people with at least one foot and the set of people with no feet ... oh hell, I just lost my train of thought.

Ask your 4 year old. Or maybe name it after your daughter Wendy. I also like to pick the three most offensive words I can find, shorten them and then play with the letter order. Then I try out a few options on my target audience. Company names that sound like you're swearing are really popular with the younger crowd but aren't a good choice if you're shooting for the middle-aged or silver crowd. On a more serious vein, company names that evoke an emotion or image that is compatible with your product or service can be quite powerful. Different spellings on a common word are popular but it doesn't help much in your search engine placement. If your target audience is from a particular industry, make a list of common words and acronyms used in that industry and try abbrevieated cominations. Another great method is a brainstorming session. Put several minds to work at it. Collect ALL of the suggestions and create a few choices. Try these choices out on your target market. Let them vote.

    M MikMit

If you were Conscious you wouldn't repeat even once. I guess the point is, I must have been unconscious for more than 12 days. Of course, some other code would need to call the 'WashHair' subroutine. It would probably be called by the ImNakedInTheShower event which was in turn triggered by the WifeThinksYouStink routine. The WifeThinksYouStink routine was called by a remote program in the 'Honey' namespace.

Did you really have to spoil our fun? Most of us were just going with peaNUTS. Of course, peas are legumes as well but we don't usually roast them, pack them in plastic and say "may contain nuts". What's really funny is that some of the most common deadly food alergies are to peanuts and walnuts. (This comment is here just in case you find deadly food allergies "funny".)

After spending 12 days, 2 hours and 14 minutes in the shower washing my hair, I finally executed the "exit sub" code.

    Sub WashHair()
    Lather = True
    While Lather
    Rinse
    If Conscious then
    Exit Sub
    End If
    WashHair
    Loop
    End Sub

Do NOT follow the directions on the bottle. It is an endless loop. What other stupid instructions have you found on consumer products?

  • Yer cannae change the laws of physics, Jim!
    M MikMit

Read Powers of Ten. The laws of physics are thought to have mutated since the beginning. I don't know if any more mutation is predicted though. It's a bit like trying to imagine infinity or more than 3 dimensions (apparently infinity exists and there are 11 dimensions in our universe). At what point in time/space does 1 + 1 = 433? Or does it ever? And at that point, would we realize the laws had changed? What if time stood still? We wouldn't really know it would we? I'm going to go take my thorazine now.

  • Outlook 2007 and Vista - a cautionary tale
    M MikMit

Outlook files have a different format than Access. They are flat files that can contain multiple types of records. PST files can be in excess of 10gb if you are using the 2003 or greater version of the file. Note: if you moved up from Office XP or 2000 to 2003 or 2007, you will need to convert the PST into the new format. The newer format is a little faster and a bit more flexible. As far as speed, it helps to increase your RAM if you're dealing with very large PST files. It also helps to run it on XP rather than that bloated piece of eye candy we call Vista. I *have* noticed that many MS programs are not totally compatible with Vista. I have actually had Outlook crash a number of times. In addition, the personal version of Vista doesn't support much networking capability, so that could 'splain some of the access problems. One more thing: if you're using BCM (business contact manager) with Outlook 2007, *don't* install .NET 3.5!! If you already have it on your system, uninstall it. If you have to develop with it, put it on a machine *not* running BCM. (Ask me how I know.)

  • Vista Sucks
    M MikMit

Sorry. I hate vista with a passion (I won't even capitalize the first letter). I hate the idea that at least 80% of my software doesn't run on vista. I hate the idea that I have to give every little process specific permission to run. I can't stand the fact that the software I wrote for Windows now has to be meticulously re-written for vista. And I don't care what anyone says, my benchmarks say it's slower than XP. The fact that vista crashes more often than it's predecessor is a strong testimonial for XP and against vista. And in place of the extra security, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give me a virus!!! I could go on but I'll just suggest the following link that will help you keep XP alive for another 10 years (about the time it will take for vista to become a viable OS): http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=printArticleBasic&articleId=9026940[^] As an alternative to going back to XP, turn off DEP, always log on as administrator, write a script to go throuh all your exe's / dll's / assemblies and give them full permissions, turn off all eye candy, turn off all gadgets, then get a quad-core CPU with 6 GB of RAM and a 10,500 RPM hard drive. Just because we can doesn't mean we should.

  • Drunk astronauts allowed on shuttle
    M MikMit

Funny side: - I'll bet NASA's insurance rates go up - What's the penalty for drunk piloting (depends on what country they're over) - Their personal trainer said they wanted to see them with a "six-pack" - Red button, green button, they all look the same when you're drunk - Can they run dog fights and bet on NBA games in space? Serious side: - Many other lives at stake - Hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars at stake - Future of shuttle missions, funding, and credibility at stake - So many people want to be astronauts, why not let somebody sober fly? I can't think of a time when I would want to be more sober than when going into orbit at 17,000 miles per hour (or more). Besides, I would want to remember every second of it for the rest of my life. Nevermind my crewmates that rely on my decision-making ability to stay alive.

  • Vista S ... L .... O ..........................................W!
    M MikMit

Thanks for your suggestions. The UAC was already disabled but I still get security warnings. Trying to figure out which software can be uninstalled without screwing the whole thing up is daunting. The task manager doesn't really give me many clues as to what's really running. I recognize some processes but most are a mystery. I know I can go through and figure it all out with special process viewers. Again, it's the hours and hours of work needed to get the system running. I'm suspecting Norton as one of the big processing theifs. I have removed it on all my other systems. SQL server is another but whaddaya do? I have removed everything that I can identify as safe to remove but it still takes several minutes to boot. On top of that, after it's booted, it still messing around with something. I get the little dizzy circle for about 30 seconds when I try to delete a simple doc file from the desktop. Another problem I have is compatibility. Several programs that I use regularly don't really work with Vista. Things like C++, Mindjet, and many company websites/activeX either won't run or need advanced configuration to run. Searching for, downloading, and installing service packs, upgrades or outright purchase of "compatible" software isn't what I was hoping for. Our company has warned us not to upgrade to Vista but I didn't have a choice if I wanted to buy a new laptop. Aside from the operating system bloat, the standard upgrade problems are a bit much for someone with a lot of software. The hidden costs in both time and new software purchases can really catch you off guard. I can't just move my software from my old laptop to the new one. The result is, my new laptop is sitting under my desk as a "future project" rather than a productivity tool. The next windows release should work on getting rid of features that are useless and adding backward compatibility. A little speed wouldn't hurt either. I remember a computer I had running on DOS about 16 years ago. I could type in the spreadsheet command and the spreadsheet was up on the screen before my finger left the enter key (literally less than one second!). It was running at around 133 mhz and had a 10 mb hard drive. I have yet to see anything that fast since. That's certainly not the fault of today's hardware. We do have more functionality just less time to use it.:(( CalmlyFrustrated

  • Vista S ... L .... O ..........................................W!
    M MikMit

Many interesting replies. My main complaint is that this is factory installed and configured. I feel like I need to go get an advanced degree in Vista then uninstall just about everything, then somehow magically "find" all the right drivers. How about something that works right out of the box? Spending 20-30 hours configuring a system isn't my idea of a good time. Besides, I actually have to use this thing to try and make a living. How many bosses out there want to spend $1,000 on a new computer then give their employee 20 hours off to go configure it so it works? My other complaint is that security is screwed down so tightly that I can't even run my own software without telling Vista it's OK - every time I run it! I would rather have the viruses. I guess I should quit complaining and go back to XP. Oh wait. I can't. This machine won't run on XP. If I remove Vista, it won't have the necessary drivers. Oh well. I can just use it as a very large, expensive coaster.

  • What am I missing?
    M MikMit

Thanks for the suggestion. This particular function/property doesn't necessarily have sequential numbering. It also has potentially 65535 indices. I don't really have a choice as to the structure (it's a file format of a third-party program). What I'm using in VB6 is perfect and I'm struggling with the idea that dot net can't do it. It feels like I'm going backwards porting things to dot net. Public Property Get Field(FldNo as Long) as String ..... code End Property Public Property Let Field(FldNo as Long, Value as String) ..... code End Property This allows the calling routine to address this property just like any other property. I originally wrote it as a method but the property approach is so much more convenient to code. CalmlyFrustrated

  • Vista S ... L .... O ..........................................W!
    M MikMit

Does anyone else have this problem? I recently purchased a new laptop with a core duo running a 1.8 Ghz with 2 GB ram. That combination should *scream*!!! Yet, it is so sluggish it's barely useable. This has to be the slowest operating system since CPM. No wait. Ever!!!!! (CPM was quite a bit faster than Vista on the 8 bit 8 mhz processor I used to have.) Am I the only one? I'm constantly amazed at the lack of real progres in the OS department. Bells, whistles, pretty transparent forms, and gadgets (read "viruses") are now more important than functionality, stability, and speed. I remember many years ago when we started talking about 4GL's. I swear, some of this must be written in 10GL. I'm reminded of something Jeff Goldbloom said in Jurasic Park, "Just be we can doesen't mean we should." I used to have to keep my code to 10-16 K (that's kilobytes). Granted, coding is much faster now but I actually hear of professors telling their programming students not to worry about code efficiency because the the hardware has so much capacity now. That's hogwash. When you talk about thousands of threads executing thousands of times and loops spinning through hundreds of thousands of string comparisons, a small inefficiency can really slow the whole thing down. The last thing we need is this happening in an OS. I don't know if that's really what's causing it but nonetheless, Vista is too slow for me. CalmlyFrustrated

  • What am I missing?
    M MikMit

I am relatively new to .net. While I have dabbled in it, I haven't done anything serious. Now I'm trying to build a fairly complex dll/assembly and am running into a real frustration. I need to have a property that is both read/write and pulls/puts data into a collection based on a unique key. The problem is, I can't overload the set portion to allow for the key to be passed along with the value. Here are the examples of both uses: MyValue = Field(100) Field(100) = "Frank" I could do this very easily in VB6. I know this is more like a function than a property. Do I really need to write two functions with one overloaded? And if I do that, the second let syntax won't work. It would look like this: Field(100,"Frank") While that's useable, it's not very consistent or user-friendly for someone using this assembly. Not only that, it creates a real migration problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. CalmlyFrustrated
