  • Which is your favorite laptop and why?
    N nicko

i love my ASUS W2Z laptop. I was sold on the 17.1 inch widescreen (1680x1050), P4 2GHz, 1GB RAM, 7200rpm 40GB HDD, DVD+-RW, but even more so on the sheer elegance of it. It has a carbon-graphite backing to the screen, and a brushed steel finish, and its won industrial design awards. It looks beautiful! I've recently had a problem with it and found that the local ASUS support is not good. Took my system for over a week and only ran some minor tests that had very little to do with the issue - still not resolved. Got it back today, but i plan to elevate the issue. The only real down side to the W2Z is the cost - about AU$ 4,500. But its worth it ;) Certainly a well put together system, meticulously designed. nicko

  • laptop hdd data recovery - recommendations?
    N nicko

yeah, i actually had the same suggestion from a colleague. unfortunately the data is worth more than several k - in time it would take to replace, regenerate, etc. it seems that my only real option, given the above, is to fork out the exorbitant amount the pros are asking. i guess it could be worse - i could have lost the data with NO chance of recovery...

the agreement i had to sign with the mob who are looking at it sets out their hourly rate at $393/hr. :omg: I guess that allows for the expensive equipment they need, and the continuity of work...but still, wow.

yeah. lesson learnt the hard way on the importance of backups. i've just bought Norton Ghost 10 and an external 250GB USB hdd - i'm taking images daily now (from my new hdd of course) onto the ext. hdd - full backup cycle which should give me daily, weekly and monthly regression. And to think that i could have saved myself ~$1500 now by spending $250 about 6 months ago. :sigh:

    N nicko

after a few crunching noises from my otherwise very reliable laptop, my hdd promptly died on tuesday (while i was attempting to GHOST it, i might add!). anyway, i've - needless to say - lost a considerable amount of data, and was wondering if anyone can recommend a good - affordable - data recovery company in Brisbane, Australia. The quotes i've been getting so far range from 1,000 to 3,000 AU$ to _try_ to recover the data. Mostly they are performance based, so its about $100 initially, and the rest if they get the job done. any recommendations appreciated.

    N nicko

when i'm using VS i use code-behinds - its cleaner and my source doesn't get published when i'm using Dreamweaver (yeah, i have to sometimes :)) i use inline - i hate using the commandline complier and inline doesn't have to be compiled. as someone else said above - horses for courses nicko

I had an issue with side by side install with the Crystal Reports addin - wouldn't load the report engine properly at run-time (for either version). Patched and updated to no avail. Ended up removing 2005 again. Other than that, it seemed to work fine. nicko

I'm curious how many girls you had in classes

In my course (in Australia) there were about 8 chicks in about 100 students - not many, and about 7 of those would have been asian.

    leckey wrote:

But why do you think so few girls go into programming/computers?

probably because there aren't many girls in programming - i mean, it probably seems daunting to step into what is predominantly a male domain and i guess most feel like they won't be taken seriously. Personally, i'd love to see more chicks in programming!;) nicko

Most people using VB will avoid writing any code at all costs, so the work probably went into making the designer better.

wtf?!?!? I've gotta say, i'm getting fed up with people grouping all VB.Net programmers into the category of "drag-and-drop programmers" just because VB6 allowed this approach! Besides, the VS designer is a function of the IDE, not the language itself - as is intellisense. I prefer to rely on my own code than any designer. I know C# and VB.Net equally well, but i prefer to code in VB.net because it is so much more readable. My personal preference. The .Net CLR provides pretty much the same capabilitys for each, so at the end of the day it comes down to just that - personal preference. To all those who bag VB based on experiences with VB6 - try VB.Net, its one hell of an improvement. Of course, if you're just dead set against the syntax of it you won't be any more impressed. Oh, and yeah Visual Studio isn't as well refined for VB.Net as it is for C#, but thats not a reflection on the language itself, rather it reflects Microsofts intention to push C# above VB. You can hardly judge a language based on the IDE alone! nicko A Strong VB.Net proponent

  • Cannot redirect after HTTP headers have been sent
    N nicko

    Suj_78 wrote:

Then I am doing response.redirect and I get an error message

you can't redirect the page by Response.Redirect() after you have sent content to the client. The reason for this is that a Response.Redirect() sends a StatusCode to the browser to indicate that the content has moved to a different location, and the browser should check there. This StatusCode is send in the first line of headers to the browser. If you write content to the browser first you cannot then re-send that header. A solution could be to include:

which would redirect the browser to http://www.someplace.com/somepage.aspx after 3 seconds. see this link for more info: http://www.html-reference.com/META_httpequiv_refresh.htm[^] hope that helps. nicko
