This is really fascinating stuff, anthropologists will have a ball. This means that the Neanderthals didn't actually die out and we are a different subspecies of homo sapiens from those that didn't interbreed with them. They could name us homo sapiens sapiens somewhatneanderthalensis to distinguish us. A hybrid between homo sapiens sapiens phpensis and homo sapiens sapiens mysqlensis could be named homo sapiens sapiens backendis and a hybrid between homo sapiens sapiens csharpis, homo sapiens sapiens pythonensis, homo sapiens sapiens htmlensis and homo sapiens sapiens lispsiensis could be named homo sapiens sapiens multipracticus. A hybrid between homo sapiens sapiens vbsixis and homo sapiens sapiens vbdotnetsis could be dubbed homo sapiens sapiens unluckyensis.

Yes, CS. Latex is OK, but next time I'll just regular rope.

No problem, I have backups, but it will take me a couple of days to recreate it. It's just that this never happened to me before. I type all my papers in Word but I always use the doc format. I didn't even realize I was using docx this time until Word went left.

Word 2007, that is. Finished typing my master's thesis with twenty or so beautiful drawings, the only thing left to add the TOC, list of tables and the list of figures. All my drawings are contained in the Word canvas feature so last night I proceed to add captions to my figures, create the list of figures and save. Close Word. Make coffee, sit on my balcony, have a ciggie, feel blissful. Go back in to send the paper to my mentor for the final review. Open Word to export the docx to PDF. All my drawings gone. Gone. Just empty rectangles instead of canvases. Cold sweat. OK, I have backups all over the place so the drawings are not lost completely, but still it will take me two days to finish the bloody thing again. Did search the internet, same thing happened to a few other poor sods but no solution. Canvas, I hate you. Word 2007, I hate you. Docx, I hate you. MS, I hate you.

  • New Languages
    O Otto Grunf

Thanks for the comment. The whole idea of trying a new language is mostly a reaction to having to use PowerShell at work, which is the only language I have used that I actively hate and actually believe is destroying my brain cells.

Good to know the details, thanks. I guess I should've phrased my comment something like this: "I would like to learn a compiled language that doesn't run on the .Net platform. It should not run on the JVM either. It should be able to produce standalone executable files unlike the Python and Ruby scripting languages that I like and sometime use. It should be an imperative language (with OO features preferably, but not required). The language's name should not be C or C++. VB6 here I come! I don't actually itch. [1]" [1] Although I may start if I actually get close to a machine with a VB6 compiler on it.

I have no problems with selling my bosses. The only downside of my method is they have to hire a new one every time.

True. My previous post was a sorry attempt at a pun on Rust, that's all. :(

Thank you all for the comments! It's just that I'm a bit tired of CLR/JVM/scripting/functional languages and I'm itching to try a nice compiled one. :)

I've been reading about new(ish) / less used languages a bit lately and the two that I've come across often are Go and Rust. There's lost of information about strengths and weaknesses, similarities and differences of each, but I haven't been able to find any discussions about them here on CodeProject so I'd appreciate opinions (if any) about them from you people. Thanks.

  • Function name choice
    O Otto Grunf

It's Scala actually and both Forogar and PIEBALDconsult are right about the function purpose. It is taken from a small example that reads a text file and prints it out displaying each line's length before it and the function makes sure that all lines are aligned/tabulated correctly.
