can anyone recommend a screen video capture program?I would agree here. I have used Jing for a while; as a free app, it has solid features. The screencapture is easy. The video capture (with sound as in voice over) is great for short on the fly tutorials and it defaults to flash so any browser can run them. I use it at the office to record tips-n-tricks stuff for the production group. :-D another one I don't see anywhere in the replies is Evernote (www.evernote.com). It is great for capturing all kinds of stuff and storing online. I use it to gather and tag webpages, screen captures, and other stuff between my office and home. The database sync's on a timer so you have the same stuff at your fingertips from any login. It also works inside a browser login so you can access your notes anywhere. pretty cool.

Visual programming in 3DThe visual and physical operation metaphor is great. more people can relate to things they push-n-pull about with their hands. As the object orient program language tools develop to the next level, this kind of programing for the masses will be more viable. It will probably start as simple scripting like pre-set block work. kits will come out using pre-defined modules to accomplish particular operations. This will be followed by a developer set where you build your own module blocks to add to the box-set. pretty soon, we're at Star Trek level... um, computer... please display the weather forcast for next week, and include my current clean clothes for comparision to build a potential wardrobe set.... Then of course, comes George Jetson, 'man, I had to push that button 5 times today...' and then Idiocracy http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808 Then it all explodes.. :omg:

What is the end of the world?I believe that it really doesn't matter what happens to me after I die (or in other words transition from this physical universe and reality to whatever the next plane of existence is). What really matters, is how I lived. How did I use each moment of this life to live; to be aware; to strive to make the world around me better than it was when I got here; to leave others to carry on this ideal. If we put all our energy into that one focus; everything else in any theological discussion is unneeded. While all of this discussion is interesting and thought provoking (most of it anyway); the thing that stands out to me is this: One of you is arguing the point using quotes from some of history’s most acknowledged deep thinkers; or at least figures of history that we all know existed and had things to say. The other one of you is arguing the point using only one source, the bible. A collection of writings that is incomplete, partially indecipherable in its original scroll form, re-transmitted so many times by MEN who each had their own personal or political agenda, and pulled through the theological wringer by so many groups of religious councils throughout history where it was dissected, shuffled around, parts discarded because they posed a threat to the power base of the time, or because they presented an alternate view of the events from the accepted groups of text. I really don't see how a 'book' so far removed from its origin can possibly hold true to its original intent. Just the way I see it. I appologize if any of my opinions are hurtful; they are only intended to question. It is why I am here; to encourage all to question.

I (not) heart *nixI'm with this guy. I ran a basic Mandrake Linux system on an old Compaq server in my garage connected to of all things a MAST IV SCSI disk array about 10 years ago. This sucker was running none stop for about 3 years without a reboot . It was setup with an Xwindows desktop and ran all kinds of distributed computing apps while allowing me to do some fun stuff whenever I had the time. I have since shut this one down, but I still have it. I now have a PIII system runing PCLinOS with the same solid reliability. The command line of a Linux system is somewhat criptic; it's based on Unix so it come by that naturally. DOS and the Windows command line are no picnic either. Basically, most of us are only comfortable with a system after we have had enough time to really internalize its structure. That's cool; it's the way things work. Like one of the others said, just breathe, have a beer, this too shall pass. To me, the big pull of a Linux system is that the underlying core; the memory management, the multi-thread processing, the raw openness to make it what you want it to be; is so superior to the stability problems of a windows system. This is not to say that Windows has made no contribution to the computing world. It most certainly has; Microsoft, Apple, and Linux have all brought something to our table for us to taste and enjoy. They each have a place in the technology landscape. It just all depends on what you want to do; some are better for one task than others.

Hard-copy storageI feel ya bro. Our office has a 'Microcrap' only policy :wtf: so FireFox is out. At home though I run with the Fox, baby! It rocks. I really like the add-on aspect of FireFox; it has such a huge list of cool feature progs to tack on it, and they all seem to work so well. This is what a browser has always supposed to be !

WINE 1.0 Releasedoften connected to phrases like: "I just got a great idea" or "sure I can do that" or best of all "Hey Ya'll, Watch this !!" (having grown up in Georgia, these proclamations of daring do are familiar to me)

WINE 1.0 ReleasedYep. spelling goof, thanks for the correction. you're right about the wine too. That stuff didn't even have time to stop swirling in the bottle before it was on a store shelf. Boones' Farm had nothing on these guys.

WINE 1.0 ReleasedOrson Wells, for Paul Mason wine. Large imposing actor with a dark suit and a goatee, sitting at a small cafe table with a glass of wine. In a deep rumbling voice he proclaims " At Paul Mason vineyards, we will sell no wine...(dramatic pause that would make James Lipton jealous) before it's time".... que soft drama music with a fade to black. Ah, ya gotta love the classics.

Yer cannae change the laws of physics, Jim!I just thinks it's all relative... Hee, Hee :-D Actually I try to not be too certain about anything. The only things I have seen that are constant are: 1. Change - everything in this reality changes continually 2. Humans resist change more that anything else - we are the Universal Yang to the Cosmic Ying. Everything else is up for debate. That is not to invite anarchy, but to recognize that existence in this reality is dynamic, always in flux and that balance & harmony are moving targets. They have to be, because lack of any movement or flux is stagnation; stagnation is lifeless.

UPS recommendationsTrue. the cost savings is not huge. Here is a listing for a 620VA that is probably comparable to the 650 that was qoute at the begining of this subject. less that $200 is not bad, but not the deal of the year either. some things just require balanced compensation for their benefit. NEW! APC Smart-UPS SC 620VA 120V APC Smart-UPS SC, 390 Watts / 620 VA,Input 120V / Output 120V, Interface Port DB-9 RS-232 Includes: CD with software, Smart UPS signalling RS-232 cable, User Manual $189.00 peace, Pheadjack

UPS recommendationsI have to agree with all who support the APC brand UPSs. I have used them for many years; I also tried Tripplite, Belkin, and IBM UPSs along the way because I found a good sale on them. The APC products have not only been worth the extra cost (often they are on sale too), but they are also consistantly solid. Sure they burn out; every UPS will over time, but APC has a great trade-in/trade-up program as well as battery replacement/UPS update kit programs. Overall, I believe APC to have the best. As to what model and size, it does depend on the system you are protecting. The basic wattage of the equipment + the special needs + power conditions in your area (at my house, the EMC changes the squirrel every weekend and causes a power bump, 'the lights blinked again; go check the computers X|) + your budget. I try to get one that is the next step up from what i need at the time since things change and power needs may increase. I'm also looking at whole house surge suppressors right now; it just seems like a good idea with little downside. Hope this helps. Be Cool, Pheadjack

What is the weirdest item you have in your box of spare parts?Yep that looks familiar. One of the first Architecture firms I worked in had a Lanier word processing machine. It used two 8" floppy drives; one for the OS, one for the data. The thing sounded like a small aircraft on boot up, but we did all our specification writing on that sucker. I have in my garage/tech museum an Alloy Tape backup drive w/ four 40Mb (wow !) tapes, the floppy bidirectional interface card, cables, and software on 5 1/4" floppy with manual. I believe it would still work. Along with other assorted detritus of technology of old, I have the first computer I bought from a friend. It is a USIT 386 SX 16Mhz small form machine. It had a whopping 40Mb harddrive and I added one of those Kingston memory boards to boost the RAM. I did freelance design work on this computer for several years using AutoCAD 12 for DOS, then upgraded to 12 for Windows and Window 3.1 (whooo Hoo). It still have the harddrive and I bet it would still boot up. I try it every once in a while just for laughs; or when REALLY bored.
