  • Solar Flares and USB Flash Drives
    P Ponytail Bob

Very well could be any of those. The only thing that gets me is that they have fairly static content (MP3s), they reside in a padded pocket in my laptop case and only come out when I am in the office. Now, since they both reside in the same pocket, they of course are exposed to the same environment, which could have been static electricity, etc... Anyway... I just chalked it up to irritating electronics until I remembered about the flares.

    P Ponytail Bob

Anyone else having issues with USB Flash Drives after the solar flares earlier this week? I have 2 that now have "disk errors" that only started on Wednesday. That's a pretty large coincidence, so I wonder if this is a symptom of solar flares... We all know that they can cause havoc with electronics, but I really wouldn't have thought that these last solar flares were strong enough. thoughts?

  • Making money as a web developer (or, how the web killed the software entrepreneur)
    P Ponytail Bob

The issue with making money on the web is the same issue with making money anywhere else. You have to have a product or service that someone else wants to pay you for. The media was one of the first enterprises to sell advertising as well as a product and there were 13 year old kids printing them in a backroom somewhere, trying to make a buck. There were merchantiles and general goods stores that sold physical goods, which were replaced by supermarkets and department stores; however Sam Walton wanted to sell physical goods, so he setup his own store. The question is not "How do I make money on the web?" The question is... "How do I get people to depart from their hard earned money?" Just my 2 cents...

In 1984 I had a Commodore 64. Probably one of the best investments of my life! In 1986 I bought a 20 meg hard drive for it. My dad commented at the time: "20 megs? Why would you ever need 20 megs?" Of course at the time, most files were 50k or so.

I love the site, and as a software developer, there is a wealth of information and support here. But I also deal with reporting, and there seems to be no support for reporting here. I would like to see a reporting forum, or maybe even a business intelligence forum. Anyone agree? BobP

The other thing to keep in mind with the "drip-feed" method... Check the clients payment terms. Just because you say payable on receipt doesn't mean that the accounting group at your client has to conform to that. If your client regularly pays net 90, you need at least 3 months of income coverage money. Plus then you hve to figure in clients the just don't pay. And you can rationalize that if they don't pay, you won't do any more work, but that doesn't make up for lost time, nor does it pay the rent. Also, be picky about who you do business with. If you have 300 billable hours at $100/hr, it looks good on paper (or in QuickBooks) as a $30,000 invoice. But if they go bankrupt, you will be lucky to see any of it in two years. I have run (and still am running) my own business, and have had all of this happen. Bob

I am going to spend several thousand $$$ to maximize efficiency in my home office, making sure that all electical outlets are controlled from a master console that will detect if I am using any electical apparatus. I figure to break even on my electric bill savings right about the time the sun goes supernova. :-D All that being said, most eletrical appliances do have some draw even when turned "off" The "Energy Star" certification here in the US has led to "low standby energy use" and the new rating in 2007 requires 80% power supply efficiency. When I enjoy my work, I tend to work longer hours, but I am a contractor, and bill for those hours. While I understand that the United States leads the world in productivity, I think this is because employees let companies take advantage of them. I have been told by perm people that they dont have enough time to do their work, so they work longer hours. WAIT! WHO gave them that work, and why do they have so much? There is a saying that I am very fond of: Lack of planning on your part does NOT constitute an emergency on mine. I learned a long time ago that if I work a full day (7:00 -> 16:00) then go home and relax, and do that again the next day, I still get my work done. The difference is that I dont take on as much, and push off what I dont have time to do. I dont live to work... I work to live. peace BobP
