  • Is 99 cents per song a fair price for music?
    R RahulOP

How about the conversion factor?? I did a little Math Somebody said an entire album costs $14.85, let's say 15. Assuming a family's gross earning to be @48k/year, the ration of album v/s income is 15:4000 = 3:800 Consider India, where cds retail at approximately $12. A graduate earns approx $600/month. Ratio 1:50 Of course, given how sad the "broadband" in India is, we probably arent pirating as much. But really, conversion really hurts us. A lot more than we want it to.

  • Charting Software
    R RahulOP

Hi there, I'm trying to create bar-graphs that track a students progress a series of tests. Nothing fancy, just bar graphs for 5 different subjects. Y-Axis to contain marks and X-axis date on which the tests were taken. The results will be stored on an SQL database. They may/may not post a link to the graphs on their blog so that when the page loads, the graph should show up. Any idea which product can do this for me? I had a look at Dundas and .netcharting but both have far more features than i need. Not to mention they waaaay too expensive :D I just want to display the graph subject wise or all subjects on the page a la Google analytics. Any suggestions?

  • how to make google find me ??
    R RahulOP

What you are asking to do-->There exists an entire industry out there to do the same. It's called SEO or Search Engine Optimisation. Hint:Google "SEO forum" The sub-links that you see below are provided by google itself. Google does this for plenty of reasons It believes your search query and the first result are a perfect match in which case you would obviously like to see more pages of the same site The first result has held that position for so long, it's now become a trusted source and therefore all links on that site are gauranteed to help you Little little things that you can do is have quality content, have genuine people link to your site, make sure all the links on your page are correct, make sure that content on your page uses keywords i.e. words that people are likely to use when searching for you Best of Luck:)

Just curious what everyone thinks. It is great that the money is going out to others, but it seems if they just set the bulk away in decent investments, they would end up giving far more way.

I am sure they would have though of that. Its not like the money will be lying around the place. Most of it will be in MS stock to take advantage of the stock market. They wouldnt offload their stock onto the market even for philanthropic reasons for the simple reason unloading that much money on the stock market may cause havoc

If I had billions to give away for the global good,, I would build the best interactive multimedia educational center on the earth where anyone could study virtually any subject anywhere in the world with a decent internet connection. Education can set people free.

"Roti, Kapada and Makaan" English Translation"Food,Clothing and House" Education may set people free but for those who dont have access to even basic amenities like those above, what will they do? You are assuming that everyone needs of food, house and money are met for them to be able to utilise the educational centre but for those unfortunate ones who dont even have the basic amenities of life, they wont have much use of them. I live in India and on the weekends, I teach Mathematics at hostels for the underprivileged. Every so often, I find a student missing because his family needs him to go out and work to make some money. The new government mandate making primary education compulsory and abolishing child labour is a good step but its going to be a long time before it really begins to affect the life of the poor.

Yes, people mess. Companies mess up. I accept that. By the looks of it,WIPRO messed up BIG time. My issue is with the fact that you imply or seem to think that *every* piece of code coming out of India is crap. That's simply not true.If it were, companies like TCS, Infosys,Satyam wouldnt be bagging multi-million dollar contracts. We've got the brains, quality work cannot be far behind. Sorry that you had to lose things close to you the way you did. I know what it feels like, haveing experienced similar losses but for different reasons. May I ask when the incident with WIPRO happened?? ITs funny that jobs are going back to America. More and more Indian students are pursuing their Masters in the US and then staying back to work. Looks like code-frog's worst nightmare:laugh:

The standards of the work being done overseas have now invaded the quality of work being done here and the quality here sucks just as bad. If Jonnie Turban Hat (I don't mean to be racial but I don't want to use any names I know as I really don't want to offend anyone but I will anyway... ) can write crappy code and my employer buys it and my job has no guarantees either I'm going to write crappy code to because I don't *need* to write it any better.

How do you know we are writing "crappy" code? Why would so many companies be shifting to India if we were doing such a terrible job? Why would some of the biggest software companies in the world set up centers in India if we were really doing such a terrible job? Why would NASA/Microsoft/Google/Yahoo... hire so many Johnie Turban Hats if they were doing as crappy a job as you claim they are. We take pride in our work. We strive to write as much good quality code as we can or we are able to. Unless you are implying that, by default, all Americans are better at code writing than Indians.

    code-frog wrote:

Now we do hard work, it works and we still get laid off as we watch our jobs go to India where the quality sucks, the product doesn't work but our jobs still stay there. One word... SUCKS!!!

Umm, why would you say that the quality of work sucks and the product doesnt work? That's a very generalised statement without proof. You've said that in the previous para as well Perhaps you should come down yourself and check out the standards of work here before commenting like this. Please do refrain from making such generalised statements for which you can offer no solid tangible proof.

    R RahulOP

I've created a Dialog based application that records audio(using DirectX of course) and changes the header of the audio file so that I get a file that is not playable by a regular player. Now,within my application itself, when I want to playback the said file,I decode the file to a "temp" with no extension and play it back. However I cant seem to delete the file either when I exit the application or when it finishes playing. I believe my application isnt letting go of the file when it finishes playing it despite the fact that I set all the DirectX interfaces to NULL(I tried to delete the file manually after it finished playing and got an "Access Denied" error) Any suggestions anybody?? Thank You
