A theological question...Ben Ashley wrote: Apologies, but I don't see the flaw. My question states that: A great engineer verifies his work, and the process is logical. A fundamentalist (Insert religion), believes in something illogical but cannot verify. My opinion is that the flaw is two-fold: 1. People have both logical and illogical sides. Just because a person is logical in one area does not mean they have to be logical in all areas. 2. Believing in a religion does not make one illogical. Being very general, one can find logic in a religion. For the most part, when you dig down deep enough there is a point where you find a very unstable foundation and the whole thing falls apart. For the most part, they end up being a moral code based upon something flimsy. But above that point you will find people who have very logical, religious beliefs (disregarding whether there is good evidence for those beliefs). But you most likely know all of this, are bored, and looking for a good fight. Sean Winstead

A theological question...Ben Ashley wrote: But what I am saying is that this engineer, in particular is: a) A great engineer b) a fundamentalist christian Are they not mutually exclusive? Your question implies that to be a great engineer, one cannot believe in something that is not 100% verifiable and/or that if one is a fundamentalist Christian then one can only believe in things that are not 100% verifiable. There are other scenarios that pose the same dilemna but I think the real flaw is in your assumptions and/or understanding of what it means to be a person who has faith in something. Sean Winstead

Non judgemental Question: Am I guilty? Some things I have learned that might apply to your question: - If you're around somebody long enough, you can learn enough about them to rip them up one side and down the other, no matter how intelligent they think they are. - Being judgemental in itself is not bad, but condemning people subsequent to the judgement is bad. - Most of us are not aware of what we ourselves have been forgiven and being aware of that might temper what we think of others. - Life is tough and people (even stupid people) go through situations that are not easily solved. Instead, I ended up standing with them, giving them comfrot when I could, and basically learning to have compassion upon them. Sean Winstead

Help Authoring ToolsI just started using Help & Manual[^]. This tool makes the documentation/help file process used by a former employer look like a minor felony. It is easy to generate HTML help as well as PDF output. There is built in support for generating indices (when creating things like manuals). There is also a built-in tool for taking screenshots and spiffing up the screenshots (i.e., adding drop down shadows, adding call outs). It is just incredible compared to what I'm familiar with. Creating online faxing servicecan any one guide me how to start off and how to do it. one of the problem i cannot understand that how can i get a new phone number for each and every customer of mine. these companies are surely using a smart trick about that. One way to find out is to call them up and ask to speak to their technical department. Tell them you are doing research and would like to know, in general, how they do that. I've done it before and it works, if you are honest and can talk to the right person. Sean Winstead

Application variables VS Cache objects !!Good point. Sean Winstead
-
Application variables VS Cache objects !!Though I can read from database again. But, why do I need to? If I have a way to store the information as a long as application runs, then shouldn't I use it? Yes. The point I was trying to make is that it may not be worth worrying about if there is nt that much data to read and it is not read too often. But as I mentioned, you can tell the cache that the data never expires and the point is moot. Sean Winstead

Application variables VS Cache objects !!If you put something in the cache, you can specify that it never expires. Even if it did expire, how much does it really cost to read it from the database again? Is it that noticeable if it is read once every hour? Every 2 hours? Every 4 hours? Sean Winstead

Find component at run-timeI'm working on a server control that needs to find components (i.e., real instances that inherit from Component and not from WebControl) by name at run-time. At design-time, I would use ISite.Container.Components to do this very thing. But at run-time, ISite is null. I'd also try to use the WebControl.FindControl method but it only finds controls, not components. Does anybody know of a way to find a component at run-time? Sean Winstead

Move over Segway, I'm planning the C6I'm not saying segways aren't cool or anything, but if that's what they're going to do, where are the flying jetpacks we were promised so long ago? Because they don't want all the bad drivers to gain altitude. Sean Winstead

Notebook Backpacks....I like all the space but sometimes I have to search for a little bit to find what I need. If the zippers aren't on the same side I'll sometimes unzip the laptop section instead of the magazine section. Also, it lets me put in so much stuff that it can get darn heavy. And the hip belt is really a belly button belt for me. I have not yet taken the time to figure out if it is adjustable so that it does fit across my hips. Sean Winstead

Notebook Backpacks....Does the front flap of that thing kind of fold down like the pictures show? I mean, undo some of the bungee type strings and it flops down? It does not flop all of the way down. It opens up to about 45 degrees, enough to let you put some bulky items into the mesh pocket behind the flap. Sean Winstead

Software outsourcingThis will be you and everyone else shortly, and you're living in a dream if you think otherwise. So you're saying the Nazis are behind outsourcing? Oh, no, wait, I get it, you're using that quote out of context to make your own point. Everyone gets your point. But I would really like it if you would see a bigger picture and drop the focus on doom and gloom. Your attitude is old to me. There have been several times that people have come across this way to me and it usually turns out to be a product more of their fear than of reality. They'd rather camp around some strategy that promises safety and protection rather than step out into the dangerous world and grow. Sean Winstead

Software outsourcingSo I take it you're going to be changing your job path - let us know how it goes! We're all rooting for you and your new faboulous career in burger flipping! :) Is it at all conceivable to you that at some point, one can give up something pretty good for something even better? Perhaps that something does not yet exist but could exist if the right people went looking for it? Perhaps the transition comes over the span of a few years or decades rather than all at once as your fears would lead you to believe? Sean Winstead

Software outsourcingI think they should force the companies that ship jobs (any kind!) out of the country where it is BASED to pay the difference to the dole account so that the governement can afford to pay off the people who have gotten sacked in this manner. Let the jobs go. Why fight a losing game? Our country needs to find the next big technology or industry that will put us another step ahead and bring in more money. We won't have a profitable future by trying to hold on to things that *will* move away to places where they cost less to do or make. Sean Winstead
