I never said I only worry about the big picture. I don't. I did say that I spend (some of) the time I save by not brooding over code for debugging and testing. Maybe I should have been more clear: what I'm talking about is contemplating the effect of each statement on the variables, then running a test and verifying each indivdual step to confirm that the changes occur in exactly the way I expect. That still takes a lot of time, but nevertheless, it is orders of magnitude faster than emulating the computer in your head while brooding over some piece of code! Static analyisis is what tools do. Real programmers debug! If only iTunes had used the junior version of Salmon, called 'Baked Beans'. It's specially designed for utilities which depend on the main branch. Spawn-Masters hold a 'toast' meeting, in which the 'beans' projects are poured onto the developers in an even layer. There is no good reason why iTunes should comprise 150 MB, not even the fact that it restricts your new Beatles album to that one, particular PC for all time. Or an approved Apple thing, unless you use Linux. It used to be possible to use these thingies with Linux until Apple restricted them to 'ornament' level.

Day three of 8.1 and I'm not quite so happy; browser and Skype unstable, failing, crashing. I applied updates manually and everything was happy though. I guess it is still Windows. Now Ubuntu would have updated at install time; and later on it would have informed me immediately if updates were available, without any of this 'Do not switch off' mullarky on power down. Kind of spoiled it for me. Yesterday I was chuffed, today not so much, it's just another wedge of cash sacrificed to the not-good-enough.Obviously as a dev, it now does everything I want, but as a 'consumer', definitely too much monkey business. :( Perhaps I'll regain my confidence in how shiny it is over the next couple of sessions. As for the start screen, I really love what it did to my Visual Studio, it broke out all the different programmes into tiles, so gone are the days of looking for Visual Studio Command Prompt, or GUIDGen etc.:thumbsup:
