The SW books can be put into two series: The "classical" and the New Jedi Order series (NJO). Wait with NJO until you have read a lot the classics. The problem with the classics are that they are not written in chronological order, i.e. some books which supposedly take place right after ROJ (Return of the Jedi) are written years after books that take place 5 years after ROJ. This is not a problem with the stories, but it gives you two options for reading the series: Either in years-after-ROJ-order or in written-year-order. (hmm... not very clearly written, I hope you get the point anyway). You can check out http://www.randomhouse.com/delrey/starwars/timeline/timeline.html for the timeline. If you want to go with the timeline you should start with "Truce at Bakura" by Kathleen Tyers. This is not one of the best books in the series, though. If you want to go for the writing-line you should start with the Thrawn triology by Timothy Zahn (Heir to the Empire, Dark force rising, The last command) which is among the very best books, and were the first ones to be published. Also recommendable are the Corellian triology by Roger McBride Allen, the Black Fleet Crisis triology by Michael P. Kube-McDowell and the Hand of Thrawn duology by Timothy Zahn. I'm running Win2K and... 1) I have a 4-year-old Panasonic SCSI CD-R drive. It works fine after flashing with a newer ROM image. 2) My Adaptec 2940 Ultra is 5 years old and still works great. 3) I have an ATI Radeon 64 DDR for video (because I also use this system to play a few games). The quality of the 2D text is outstanding on a decent monitor. (6 months old) 4) I'm running an AMD 1ghz T-bird with 256mb of RAM on an ABIT KT-7 motherboard. (6 months old) 5) I have a SB Live (3 years old?), but if you're gonna play games, you might want to consider the Hercules sound card (can't recall exact model name), especially if you have a newer VIA chipset motherboard.

Well, actually, not anymore. VA Linux, the owners of OSDN (a bit of a misnomer as it is a pale shadow of MSDN), are getting out of the hardware business. Now what was the company valuation after it IPO'd - and now its getting out of the business that those shareholders invested in. Great value opportunity I'm sure. but NAI or Symantec wouldn't be a better choice? McAfee and MS have been doing deals since 1998, when McAfee VirusScan was included in the 98 Plus!!! pack. MS actually approached Symantec first (and I don't want to discuss the details, since they might be trade secret or something), but Symantec didn't like the terms MS put forth, so MS then asked McAfee, who accepted. Since then, the two have done other deals, e.g. McAfee software scans attachments on Hotmail. Yep - I will definitely write it up, but the initial upgrade we did was only an interim step. When we do it properly it will make for an interesting read (though most of it will be "we used Advanced Server and clicked on these options" :)) cheers, Chris Maunder
