How hard is it to implement a 1984 "simple" hardware communication protocol?I did build my own MIDI card for the IBM PC ISA bus in the 80's. The main difference between MIDI and RS232 serial comms is the baud rate needed. I used a 2MHz crystal for the MIDI. RS232 uses 1.8something MHz crystal. The reason is that the baud rate needed for MIDI is not possible otherwise.

Single Board PC's for Windows IOTI bought a small windows capable board some time ago. It had linux installed but I put windows 10 IOT on it and got it working but because it had a small disk I had problems with windows update taking up all the disk space all the time. So I gave up on it. I will put linux on it again when I have more time. So my advice to you is that whatever board you get make sure you have a least some gigabytes for windows update ðŸ¤

Waking up to a messYes it's a very frustrating situation. My salvation is having a side project that I can work on and actually make some progress on. Most of the time ðŸ¤

Creating useful Technical Documentation for a projectI've done quite a lot of this type of documentation in the past - my advice to you in your situation with the limited time you have is to create high level diagrams explaining how things are put together (as you have already done). Also document build and deploy procedures. I've used Visio for this in the past - but in my current job I've been using Lucidchart [^] and I would highly recommend that if you are not already a Visio "pro" :)

Sharepoint?I was doing SharePoint development in my last job (SP 2010 and SP 2013). The development environment consists of Visual Studio (2010 or 2013 or 2015), SQL Express (2012+) and SharePoint Foundation (2010 or 2013) (it's free). Setting all this up correctly is no easy task. But you can find help for that online - e.g. Building the Ultimate SharePoint 2010 Development Environment[^]. SP 2013 setup is very similar. I have no experience with SharePoint 2016 and I don't know how to setup development for that as MicroSoft is no longer offering the free Foundation for that version. SharePoint will be with for a long time I think.
