    S SomeGuyThatIsMe

One of our SA's got a web based product called mozy to take snap shots of pc's for people who are out of the office. I'm not familiar with all the options but i know doing a full drive or selected folder backup is possible. From what i remember it can also be scheduled and only requires an internet connection to work, we wanted it to be totally transparent to the users.

    S SomeGuyThatIsMe

I've had a few android phones, the problem isnt with the os is with all the bs the manufacturers put on it. If you're up to it load cyanogen mod on your HTC and you'll be amazed at the difference w/out that HTC Sense crap. I switched to a windows phone and dont ever want to go back. My boss still has an htc with sense and gets a message about sense locking up at least once a day, even when the phone has just been in his pocket.

I have a 925 and love it. I wish it had more storage or an sd card slot, but i've never had a problem with lag or delays that couldnt be attributed to poor data connection where i was.

I'd settle for FF not breaking something every release. Chrome and IE manage to pull it off. I've had a web forms app running for years no problems, then all of a sudden some user has their install of FF update and some feature on my site broke. 2 days later FF released another update and everything went back to normal. If one of the major browsers cant be bothered to keep its behavior consistent from version to version how do we have a hope of writing apps that work everywhere short of going back to the old "Click for IE" "Click for netscape" buttons. I've never had that issue with Chrome and what broke wasn't even related to an item on their change list for the new version.

I wouldnt have posted, well ok maybe i would have, if this was a new or junior person. If they were still around i would have tried to help them. This was written near the end of their time with the company, maybe that explains it. This person also spent a lot of time trying to prove how much smarter they were than everyone else.

Found this in a sp, not sure why it was done this way, @fileLength and @userId are passed in, and i've changed the names of the tables so i could post this, so i realize the tables may not make sense(they do in the real code).

DECLARE file_Cursor CURSOR FOR SELECT Length
    FROM Files f
    INNER JOIN User p
    ON p.UserId = f.UserId
    INNER JOIN Playlist pm
    ON pm.ListId = p.DefaultListId
    WHERE p.UserId = @userId
    AND pm.FileNumber <> -1

    -- get total length
    OPEN file_Cursor
FETCH NEXT FROM file_Cursor INTO @length

    WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
    BEGIN
    SET @fileLength = @fileLength + @length

FETCH NEXT FROM file\_Cursor INTO @length

    END

    CLOSE file_Cursor
    DEALLOCATE file_Cursor

I have that exact same pattern in my DB(not done by me), i wonder if they were both written by the same person. In my version though all those varchar(8000)s are ignored in the first SP and passed to a second which does even more string manipulation with cursors. wonder why they just didnt use one varchar(max) or a text field.

  • find data between 2 dates
    S SomeGuyThatIsMe

in sql server, both of those dates default the time to midnight, not sure bout other db's but i assume its the same. If all you have is the one date you can use a some DATEADD function to add a day to it and just make the query Tdate < date + 1. all the db's i've seen have some form of that function as do most popular languages..even javascript can do it.

  • How can I check if my IIS is alive using C#?
    S SomeGuyThatIsMe

there are quite a few free server monitors floating around the internets. I've been using PA Server monitor for some lightweight stuff. we had an old server with an iffy nic so we used a device called an iBoot that pinged the server and after x missed pings it killed power to the server and brought it back on after 30 seconds. If you want the app to run on the server i'm sure theres a way to check the app pools, or you could look at the asp_net or w3svc processes to see if they're still running. iisreset should be able to be run from a Process.Start() in c# once you determine its stopped.

  • Strange file download issue
    S SomeGuyThatIsMe

On our web app we've been allowing the user to download the audio files they create/upload for quite a while using the same method. A few months ago that changed a little bit but nothing drastic. Recently (i found out about it the other day, dont know when it first started) any time a user downloads a .wav file via Safari (tested with 5.0.3) or Firefox(3.6.11 or 3.6.13) the last bit of the wave file gets corrupted. In Adobe Audition it just loops the second or two of audio before the corruption for the rest of the file in windows media it just stops playing. Downloading the same file from the same account in IE8 works perfectly. It isnt always the last 3 seconds, it seems to be the last 10 or 15% of the file(percentages are a rough guess) that has the problem. I've been googling, but with little luck, and have no idea what could cause this. I've also gone through the FF revision list back to 3.5.9(last known working version) but didnt see anything that seems related. I was thinking a fix in a more recent version may have caused the problem. Any help or ideas would be appreciated, John

  • Email spam rules
    S SomeGuyThatIsMe

We send out mass emails(not not spam) for our clients, generally schools and they mostly send out newsletters and announcements. What they used to send home with kids, they now email so the parents stand a chance of seeing it. Regardless of that, does anyone know of any new anti spam rule sthat recently went into effect? granted school just started in most places here in the US, but in the past week our customers are complaining about a lot more bounce backs than normal, i assume they're bad addresses. The same thing happened to us when the SPF record went into wide use, not sure if something new came out in the past few months or this year.
