The Optiplex GX620 isn't "protected" against adding a larger drive, as I've seen a 750GB drive and a second 160GB added into one, although of course, there were additional cables required, since the chassis only has power cables supplied to the first and second drives, so an extra power cable and 2 data cables were needed. Win32 coding is lot better than MFC . For example , I did my first TCP server using CSocket . I tried to use the same CSocket in a console application . I was able to create,bind and listen on the server object -but I was surprised to find that OnAccept() never fired when clients attempted connections ! . It took me a while to realise that in a console app, if we use CSocket, then the messages won,t be pumped to the socket layer . Someone suggested me to use a invisible framewnd class to act as message handler ! So lets learn it in the right way (hard way ?)- Win32 redindian

Like I say, nothing changed (except Symantec virus definition file update). However, having managed to look in the system event logs, there are startup errors relating to ACPI. On further reading, this could be battery failure on the motherboard, which might also cause issues when shutting down. I'll check this out when I'm actually in the same office. And having updated the printer drivers to the latest from HP, it (pause for dramatic effect) does exactly the same. The PCL file seems to contain the complete document. The *really* weird thing is that File/Print/OK does the same :( However, selecting a different printer, then reselecting the original one doesn't do this. Since it only affects Excel, the templates supplied to the user do exactly that when the print command is issued (which is a work-around), and for ad hoc documents, the user now knows to select a different printer and reselect the HP2200. TVM. I managed to find a PDF on MSDN which details various chipsets and the feature support for DX9, which told me that yes, it will work. It's not the fastest card, and turning on all the game video features does slow it down, even on a P4 2.xGHz 1.5GB RAM system, but it's playable, which was the main thing. Steve S Developer for hire

Thanks Chris, that's exactly what I was afraid of. :( The 3rd party are adamant that they won't change their code, but since the function in question is a 'convenience' one, I think I can emulate what it's doing, making calls to other functions within the DLL anyway. Having looked at stack frames, I can see why it wouldn't be possible. I don't even want to think about playing with the stack frame to try and jump to the code, writing the emulation code in the wrapper would be much easier & faster... Steve S Developer for hire

I should, however, have checked that my manifest was being correctly compiled into the resources, which, as it turned out, wasn't, because I'd used what I assumed would be a predefined value for the ID, rather than '1'.:sigh: Irritatingly, the standard controls I was using (list view/richedit/tree) all had visual styles, so I didn't spot it straight away.... In your next job - make 100% CERTAIN that your proposed development plan to include all technoloigies used and test plans to be run are approved by the project manager. Don't allow yourself to be set "free" to do whatever you want "as long as you finish oin time". That is a recipe for failure. I understand liking the freedom, etc. but you need to cover your ass. Take the extra time to prepare development plans that you submit to the PM and get his/her sign-off. THen, if this happens, you can show them your dev plan where it says "DB will be developed on SQL server using standard SQL" with the PMs signature. CYA!!!!!! Glano perictu com sahni delorin!
