That's disgusting! What could be more evident of man's complete disregard for any living thing on this planet apart from himself? I won't get into a debate about philosophy here but I think tearing living things apart and stuffing electronics into them is horrendous. Have these idiots any respect for anything? Jeez, I despair. It's not the fact "it's just a bug" - it's the fact they can just breed a living thing, take it to pieces and impose their will on it. I think they should hand the money back and get on with something useful - like making the tea. Without proper programming, anything can happen! - Zaphod Beeblebrok

  • Do you do nature? Or is safari.com your lot?
    S Stravaiger

I must admit I need the outdoors just to get by. Sitting on my bahookie for 8 hours a day is not good for you so I've been to the Alps, Pyrenees and Atlas climbing. Camped in a lightning storm at 3500 feet (that was scary) and had all sorts of frights on veritcal walls! My equivalent of Savannah is sea kayaking. You feel pretty damn small on a big swell when the horizon disappears. Have a look : www.stravaiger.com Le gach deagh dhurachd

  • Linux/Windows: I don't want replies to this new thread...
    S Stravaiger

nah! I come here because I used to come a lot when I was a GUI\Installer\device driver writer on all Windows platforms. It's a brilliant site for Windows and I've learned a lot. I come back (now a Solaris\Linux developer) just to keep up with the developments in Windows. I thought Win2K was brilliant when it came out and I wrote tons of apps and drivers for it. I fear for the future though with WinXP and I'm glad I'm not a Windows developer any more. I also find the Linux\Windows battles funny because when all's said and done you can make more dosh out of Windows apps 'cause more folks are using it. That said, more and more devlopment is moving to the web and I relish the coming C#\Java battle. Keep up the great postings peeps! Le gach deagh dhurachd

  • Stirrers of the Windows World UNITE!
    S Stravaiger

I used to write Windows device drivers and could spend day after day with my head in SoftIce and reading hex printouts in bed. Invariably I would end up following lines of assembly out of my driver and up the skirts of some crap application that was meant to adhere to the "standards" (Windows Printing System, WDM etc). What I found was a binary free for all in there. If it's doesn't work - hack it - that's the Windows way 'cause ol' M$ ain't gonna help you out! I saw "accountability" mentioned further up. The accountability just shifts to the next poor bum who has to interface with those apps under the hood. I still use Windows at home as Dreamweaver runs on it and not Linux plus I can play games on Windows. That's what Windows is for, oh and setting up web servers that spam the universe with codered attacks and inundate users inboxes with security bombs. If I want a secure platform that won't crash every five minutes then Linux is the one for me. If I want to play Doom and design a home page then I use Windows! Viva Linux - my reset button ain't got no fingerprints on it!!! Le gach deagh dhurachd

Hey, I looked at the store and saw a very interesting thing - a programming T-Shirt that isn't the size of an aircraft hangar ;P Has anyone gone on a course and got the T-Shirt at the end which is only useful for keeping the rain off you car? Are programmers generally huge or is it just the American ones ;) Le gach deagh dhurachd

Hah! VB! ho ho. Can you imagine the construction industry equivalent? Big company wants people to use it's own house designs, not just architects with several years training and much bigger brains. So they release the "Very easy Build" package for Joe Punter to design and build his own house! I'd love to walk through a town built with that! Houses with porches at the back, chimneys sticking horizontally out of the walls, roofs upside down. Every now and then you'd see all the lights in a house go out, a rumble of feet, all the family run outside then run back in and the lights come back on!!! VB? ho ho! Le gach deagh dhurachd

Ha, what about the quote in Bill Gate's "The Road Ahead". I forget which page it's on but it refers to the new "wired" world where everything is connected to the net: "Users will be able to search for anything anywhere - even if they don't know what they're looking for"...or something along those lines! • A blown knee totally sucks
    S Stravaiger

Hey, I went on a climbing holiday to the Swiss Alps many years ago and had a terrible fall and knackered my knee. I was so bad I could wobble the kneecap around like an ice-cream on a hotplate. It was horrible. Where did this happen? Halfway up the north face of the Eiger? No - a piggy-back race in Geneva aiport at 3am! I crashed into a bin with my friend on my back! However, I still managed to climb the Matterhorn a week later!! Stravaiger Le gach deagh dhurachd

  • Two kids free to a good home
    S Stravaiger

No kids, no telly but two cats that walk all over the keyboard when I'm trying to write that next killer app - or even worse, a grovelling email to the bank manager. Favourite comedy is Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, when Mr. Creosote explodes - I can barely breathe I laugh so much. As I don't have a telly I watch DVDs on the PC - not bad once you get used to the constant whirr of the drive!! Any other developers out there not have tellies? Stravaiger Le gach deagh dhurachd

  • VMWare (Recommendation)
    S Stravaiger

You're absolutely right. I love VMWare, or at least I did before trying to use it too much! I use it to read my emails which are unavailable under Linux but if I leave a VMWare session (with Win98SE) running too long it leaks memory like a seive and logs me out of X windows! I know people who use it a lot though. If I had 1Gb RAM I'd even use it for Windows development (which I still do!). I've also seen people pull their hair out over it though if it doesn't recognise your video card.

  • RedHat Linux 7.1 + M$ Windows 2000
    S Stravaiger

Yep, sure can - that's what I do (or what I did before ditching Win2K and using VMWare instead!). Install Win2K and leave enough free space for Linux (Suse in my case). Remember Linux needs at least twice the size of your RAM for swap space (ie 256Mb RAM=512Mb swap partition). What I then did was install Linux in the free space and install LILO in the MBR and use that instead of Win2K's loader. Works a treat. When I upgraded to Suse 7.1 though I just binned Win2K and used VMWare instead.

EZ CD Creator uses .CDR files but as far as I know you have to create the new image on a blank CD and then use that.
