That's what ticks me off with this whole thing. You describe the vibe that I'm getting from Microsoft. I know that I didn't have these tools before, and at the price they have set, I probably will continue to use the open source tools that I have been using. Plus, since I am priced out of using Microsoft's tools, I'm certainly not going to recommend them to anybody I work with and/or consult to.

It sounds like it's the SQL Server installation that is causing the problem. A BETA version of sql server. A BETA version where they told you, don't install this on a production machine, or any machine that you don't feel like rebuilding. All that said, rereading the original post it sounds like the big problem is in the uninstaller. It uninstalls the 2.0 framework too early in the process from the sounds of it. Point John Simmons, that does in fact sound pretty lame. Either way, I'm just rebuilding the box that I had all the pre-release stuff on tonight. Even if that installer did supposedly work, I'd probably still be rebuilding.

it's only a lame-ass excuse to the stupid asses that installed the pre-release software on a machine not thinking they might have to rebuild it.

  • Asp, Jsp, php and other Ps
    T tidge

Yes. Actually, if you put a lot of your code in the html then ASP.NET and ASP have a lot in common. I tend to keep most all of my code in the code behind. I did some ASP work (having not done any pure asp in the past) and was surprised at what I didn't know because I just hadn't used ASP.NET that way.

Learning ASP.NET does not mean that you automatically learn ASP.OLD too. I went from coding on mainframes, to ASP.NET. Then picked up some regular old ASP work and it is plenty different. Knowing ASP.NET gives you a good base for being able to figure out ASP. But that doesn't mean that you "know" it.

  • What's the long term future of New Orleans?
    T tidge

Most likely they will rebuild the city right back where it is. Which is unfortunate. The SHOULD rebuild it in Montana. If you think about it though, it will be weeks (if not months) before they can really start doing anything. That's just a guess. But I've lived in places that were flooded not nearly as bad as N.O. and it took quite a while for those places to recover. How many of the displaced citizens will have found new jobs and new places to live by the time N.O. starts to recover?

  • Pentium M vs. IV
    T tidge

The Pentium M was redesigned to save on power. I think the standard benchmark that I saw (quite a while ago now) was that as far as speed was concerned a P-M 1600 was about the same as a P-4M at 2400. Something along those lines. Where you really notice it, I think, is with the power savings though. My Pentium M notebook can run with wireless on, running Visual Studio and Sql Server and surfing the web for between four and five hours before it needs more juice. as for your list, I would say RAM, at least 512. 1 gig would be better. I have 512 in my laptop, and I wish I had more. Disk, at least 60GB. I have a 60 now, and I'm regularly flirting with 75% full. Integrated wireless LAN is a must.

yeah, the same thing has happened here in Oregon. Although, I still haven't stepped foot in the place. It's funny, because when i was living in Georgia, Krispy Kreme was just another doughnut shop. It would be like standing in line for a Dunkin Donuts or Winchell's, or (insert local doughnut shop name here).

  • Coding Style
    T tidge

Exactly. Why prefix strongly typed fields? Many people will argue that it gets to be too much of a hassle to scroll up to see what the type of a field is, if they don't remember. If scrolling is that much of an issue, maybe the code should be refactored and split into smaller methods. Either that, or use a good developer tool so that if you wonder what type something is, all you have to do is mouse over it.

  • First Sci-Fi...
    T tidge

I don't have any idea..... But there is a sci fi book from my childhood that I have been trying to track down. I cannot for the life of me remember the name though. It was basically about this kid that lived in a domed city. All the people in the city had implants in the back of their neck that told them when to go to work, and when to go to school and things of that nature. So this kid goes and escapes to the world outside, and has to learn to survive. That's about all I can remember of it. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Anyone remember the name of the book? I think it may have been a short series. Anyone? Anyone? Beuller?

  • What kind of salary to expect?
    T tidge

Exactly. Do some research. Find out what other people are making that do roughly the same job in the same area. Use the internet, the library, anything you can think of. I had a buddy that called and requested average salaries and job descriptions for a poll he was taking for a school project. If you come in and suggest something that is at least in the ball park, then at least that gets them thinking that you and they think quite a bit alike. Come in too high, or too low, and they may wonder if there is something strange about you :)

I guess I have to say 4. Been coding for money since 93. As the years have gone on I have spent less time coding for a hobby and more time coding for work. It's to the point now, that I spend so much time working that I don't care to work with a pc when I don't have to. Luckily, I find my work fun and enjoyable, but I don't want to do it 24 hours a day anymore. A wife and kid will do that to you.
