  • Selectively block USB devices from connecting to PCs
    T Toto1107

    Wondering if anyone has experienced this yet in the work place since Microsoft rolled out the ability. We are suffering with older embedded tools getting caught up - flash tools, debugger tools, analyzers, etc... I can't help but think there is going to be a performance hit with the white listing portion. https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-now-you-can-selectively-block-usb-devices-from-connecting-to-your-pcs/

  • Workplace Policies
    T Toto1107

    Along the same lines as Windows Admin Rights for Software Engineers.... Our workplace recently decided to push down a policy for Symantec to scan for Reputation risks - any software not defined by Symantec's large community of users is marked as a WS.Reputation.1 risk and will be deleted. Add to that if found multiple times you get automatically disconnected from the workplace network. We write software for our INTERNAL use only, for testing our products. It is not "sold" to the general public. So IT wants to know the EXACT spelling, the EXACT paths, and have the source code to review to make sure we are not writing malware instead of our jobs. A few of us got banned and it took 8 business days to get computer access back to "normal". In the mean time I got to organize my file cabinets ... They put the "delete" and ban on hold for now while they try and figure out how to make it work... For now I rename my executables to OUTLOOK.exe, POWERPNT.exe :-\ So how does your workplace handle this ?

    Given the litigious society we live in, you should clarify who is responsible if someone gets hurt - the "owner" of the trampoline or the collective 3 backyard neighbors since you are allowing it to "share" space. At least in the states, having a tramploine increases your cost of home owners. :omg:

    We replace our landline with Vonage 2 1/2 years ago and have no regrets. I notice no difference in clarity which I did notice with Skype. We have AT&T DSL. Saves us over half what we used to pay for overseas calls and they have an app for your cellphone so you can piggy back and get the same rates on you cell.

  • Is the Code Review Parallel Programming or Singleton?
    T Toto1107

    We currently are trying to revive / implement Code Reviews. I’ve included a few links we’ve used as references. We had tried in the past to do formal reviews, in the beginning there was support but as schedules became tighter…it got left by the curb. We are now trying with informal reviews, and collecting metrics to support adding time to the project schedules for inspections. Realistically, there is not enough time to review everything. So guidelines help to consider potential risks like: The software … • Involves multiple 3rd Party development partners. • Involves new technologies or technologies unfamiliar to the development team. • Introduces a new or significantly revised software architecture. • Involves a complex architecture with many software assemblies and/or parts. • Includes parallel development of software assemblies and/or parts that share an interface (e.g. mutual communication channel). • Supports or will be reused by more than one software part, software assembly or software project. • Supports a safety critical software part, software assembly or software product. • Supports a feature or function that is critical to system operation (e.g. could result in a shutdown) • Supports a feature or function that is critical to the customer. • Is new or has been significantly revised (more than x %). • Will be developed by a contractor or 3rd party. • Will be developed by an inexperienced software developer. • Will be developed by a software developer who is new to the program. • Relies on multiple interactions between subsystems • Contains time critical features or functions We also use static code analysis to catch *simpler* common mistakes, code reviews focus on logic / requirements / functionality errors. http://www.ganssle.com/articles/inspectionspart1.htm http://www.processimpact.com/pr\_goodies.shtml http://www.crosstalkonline.org/search-all-issues/

  • Visual C++ 6 - Will it work under Windows 7
    T Toto1107

    I have not had luck getting the VS 6 SP6 to install without issues in 32-bit or 64-bit mode as Admin (well, what is considered *admin* in our work environment) I get a dialog box stating SP6 was not sucessful, I think SP3 was the last SP that didnt throw errors.. We just finished evaluating our engineering tools for the Win 7 upgrade so we can plan... I've had one program crash VS6 on source code rebuild, a different application was able to rebuild but VS locked up in debug mode, other VS apps didnt execute without problems after rebuild... Some common problems we found with some of our apps : Session0 No Longer a User Session[^] Deprecated Features for Windows 7[^] It just Works [^] XP Mode not optimized for graphics / hardware intensive[^]

  • Anti malware software you choose?
    T Toto1107

    I have been using the paid version of Malware Bytes for about 1 year, problem free for home computer. I have it running with Avira no problems. I've had McAfee, Norton, and Symantec in the past and have gotten hosed (kids). Malware support spent 4 days helping me clean up the mess - Friday thru Monday, answering emails within a 2 hour window. For a one time fee, I was impressed with the response & quality of the help. McAfee & Symantec had non-existant customer support, and impacted the performance. Don't notice performance issues either with Malware & Avira. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php[^] http://www.avira.com/en/solutions/home_home_office.html[^]
