  • If you are travelling at 80mph.......
    V Vic Rauch

What I'm wondering is this: Is this guy still alive? I can't believe she is still with him! Not everyone gets math. It comes VERY easy to me, but I have this wonderful lady in my life who doesn't get math. Big Deal! She is one of the smartest people I know, but her brain knows words, not numbers. She can spell, I can't. I can do math, she can't. This guy needs his head slapped real good!

  • Can I become a good programmer?
    V Vic Rauch

My first programming job was 1 1/2 years long before I moved to another company. About 3 years later my first boss asked me to do one more system for him. When I returned, on a part time basis, I looked over what I had done in that first 1 1/2 years. A couple of the things I had done were brilliant, but most of my previous work was only adequate at best. Was was really the best part of going back and seeing my old work was realizing that I had learned enough in the three years after I left that I could tell what was "brilliant" and what wasn't. This will happen for you too as you continue in this business. And secondly, I have always been "slow" in EVERYTHING I do. When I was still in college, I worked as a carpenter. I was the slowest one in the shop, but when something out of the normal needed to be done, the boss always put me on it because, in his words, he knew I would do it best. I still love this field of work, and I've been at it, including my time in classes during college, for 41 years. You have the right attitude in "I'll never give up!" I'm really glad to have you in our field of endeavor.

Yes, that is a VERY sobering moment! Especially when you realize you don't have "the" answer, and you can't even think of ANY answer. Humility at its best.

  • Anyone want to guess what this does in javascript?
    V Vic Rauch

And now, to the unexpecting, there are people on facebook asking others on facebook to copy something and paste that into the address bar. It then sends itself to all of the user's facebook friends. Very insidious!

This sounds exactly like me! I have found that my fingers (while typing) can spell better than I can while writing on paper. It must be that "not thinking" idea.

  • The framework myth
    V Vic Rauch

When I was reading the article, and then everyone's responses, all I could think of was the government in Washington, DC, USA. I sure wish they would read this article and maybe understand that trying to dictate everything from the top down is NOT the best answer. A few (FEW) guidelines, standards, etc. are great to help people with their job (company level) or their state or city progress (government level). Amazing to me how family, company, and government problems, solutions, and methods seem to follow the same principles. But it seems like there is always someone, higher up, that thinks their ideas are so good, everyone under them should be forced to follow the bosses way of doing things. Sad.

    V Vic Rauch

I looked at your example article and really liked the way you showed both C# and VB, plus allowing the reader to collapse either the C# or VB code is a GREAT idea. I'm new to VB.net and have never used any language like C#, so reading something where all the code is only in C# I have found does not help me at all. Your approach works very well. Thank you for presenting it here.

    1. Internet enabled TVs Because I do not use cable, an internet enabled TV would be nice so I could use Hulu.com to watch shows I like, but are only available on cable (or some internet outlet). If you would like to sit in your TV chair and check your facebook, twitter, or email, then the internet enabled TV would be nice. But, if you have cable, TiVo (or something like it), and see no reason to check facebook, twitter, email, etc. from your TV chair, then you don't need the internet enabled TV. I have my laptop hooked up to my receiver and TV so I do not "need" a TV that is internet enabled. My laptop serves that function for me. And my TV (26 inch) is too small to check email on from my TV chair.

  • A Note To Access Developers [Resolved]
    V Vic Rauch

G-tek, I agree with everything you have said here. I have worked in Access since 1993 and with good code, Access works very well. Of course, one needs to keep the database "small" rather than thinking bigger is better. But with a good education in Access, the competent developer will help their customer pick the correctly sized database system for the customers solution. But, when the customer uses users to write their Access database, the majority of the time, they get the amateur solution that does not work well, and then Access gets blamed.

    The Lounge com question

  • What would you do?
    V Vic Rauch

I would report it, the sooner the better. I do agree that whenever someone leaves a job for another, we always take something with us. Generally, most of what we take is in our heads, but there are the occasional snippets that we either "invented" ourself or are so used to using that we just "need" it. One thing to remember, the new job has (at least should have) their own standards, so what we are accustom to just might not be acceptable in the new job because of their standards. I had to fire a man that stoled a complete system from his previous company, and told the manager that hired him that he was authorized to have it because he wrote most of it. I talked to his previous employer and found out he had not even worked on the system, but did work with the system he stoled. While working for our company, he continued to steal, or try to steal PC software is why I even starting thinking the software he brought with him was stolen.

  • Multiple monitors suck your productivity away
    V Vic Rauch

    John C wrote:

In your particular example it sounds like what you really need is a larger monitor, not more monitors.

That is the whole point everyone is trying to make here. Two or three monitors are used as ONE big monitor, not for two or three different tasks they are trying to do at once. But one task, with a large desk to place their work on. There is a huge difference between multitasking, which could be done on one monitor, and single tasking on multiple monitors.

I have found a good business partner, and a good marketing guy too. Thanks for the licence thing too. I had planned on selling the program, but will look at the licence very carefully. I really do understand about the "spectacularly bad decisions (SBD)." I'm still paying for them. Mine were more personal financial rather than business, but still SBDs. That is why I'm asking questions now, rather than after a whole bunch of SBDs. I'm trying to minimize those! Again, Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I will be reading the "Diary of a CEO" BTW, I'm a firm believer that I can learn from both successful and "failed" projects. Especially if the person that has failed knows it, has a good idea why, and does not blame everyone else. I did not get the idea you are blaming everyone else. Some things just fail. Again, Thanks! Mr. Holmes, I have embarked on writing my first commercial package. I have been working with corporate solutions for a long time, and seeing your message about the "daunting task" I figured you might be willing to either give some concrete suggestions or point me to some existing "helps" for this new venture. Thanks, Vic Rauch
