Mike Gaskey wrote: The President's view (if I can correctly interpret what I've read) is that with Saddam we have an absolute enemy who has: 1) biological, 2) chemical, 3) possibly nuclear materials. You probably know other countries have such means, and could potentially attack the US, or could furnish these weapons to terrorists: Iran, China, Pakistan, North Korea, Russia to name a few. Will they all be the next targets? I don't understand the link between 9/11 and WMD. The weapons used were cutters, not chemical or biological warfares. Moreover, SH has chemical/biolgical weapons since the 80's (thaks to thewestern countries), and these weapons weren't involved in any attack against the US. BTW, did SH ever directly target the US? Mike Gaskey wrote: France is placing itself between us and the goal of eliminating the risk preemptively. The French position has been quiet always caricatured and deformed by the US media, 'cause IMO it's easier to make it a target than to answer to the questions it raises. It was also an easy way to hide the fact the World opinions are following France, Russia and Germany, not the US. It's IMO the role of a real friend to warn me if I'm planning to do a major BS, not to support me whatever the silly things I could do. It's not the role of friend, but of a flatterer. As wrote Jean de La Fontaine, My Good Sir, Learn that each flatterer Lives at the cost of those who heed. The US will problably learn it also in the future. You just forget two points: 1) UN forbid Iraq to build cruise missiles, and Iraq may not have the technology to design such missiles. 2) Iraq has already Mig-21. Moreover, I don't see why financial considerations would obliterate strategical ones. Angels banished from heaven have no choice but to become demons Cowboy Bebop

I think that sounds rather shifty, but, in reference to this particular statement, "The United States has offered to give India the $2.5 billion owed to it by Iraq and assure its oil supply for unambiguous support of its war against Baghdad, a report said Saturday.": I wanted to point out that unless the US does this, India may attempt to prevent war simply to make sure they can get their $2.5 billion that they are owed. Hence, in this particular instance, the US is balancing the monetary incentive (i.e. making sure India doesn't have a monetary incentive to back Iraq). It's also not that different from the money games that Saddam has been playing -- giving big contracts to the countries that back him. Russian and French companies have done well financially because of the fact that their countries take softer approaches to Iraq. (About a year ago, Russia was pushing for an elimination of sanctions altogether.) ------------------------------------------ They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Benjamin Franklin In an encampment expecting daily attack from a powerful enemy, self-preservation is paramount to all law. - Thomas Jefferson

Michael P Butler wrote: The guy is responsible for one of the worst regimes in the world at the moment. Peope live in fear under him, they have no freedom to express their own views. People just disappear, are tortured and murdered. Michael, I agree with your assessment of Saddam but also have to agree with Paul on the US being the policmen when not asked to do so. As for the people just disappearing, I have an inlaw who's father just disappeared under Stalin. So I do see a personal side here. Personally I think what the US did to keep the USSR in check was justified but also see those actions as a basis (beginning point) for most of the problems the US has in the middle east. So it is a real catch-22 situation for me. What are we duplicating, if we go it alone? So the best I see is get the UN united behind doing something and hope for no war but be ready if we have to. Now with France and Russia saying no way for now. What pressure does he have? "I will find a new sig someday."

KaЯl wrote: On the contrary, US citizens seem to be proud of their origin enough to consider themselves as being part of a restricted community. Am I right? Well, it first began with the term "African-American". Some people are rather irritated with the term, since, for the most part, people don't call themselves anything but "American" and don't know why blacks have to go and makeup a term that says, "I'm not a part of you". But, there is some logic behind it: Blacks have, historically, been excluded from the larger American society, so it does make some sense to indicate the different historical background in some cases. Now, some people might call themselves an Irish-American or Italian-American, but the terms don't carry much weight as far as their experience goes. It carries about as much relevency as saying "my great-great-great grandfather was ..." - in other words, its simply an interesting fact and it follows the same trend as the "African-American" or "Native American" terms (which do sometimes reflect something). But, as for me, although I am almost exclusively of Dutch descent, I don't call myself a Dutch-American. The term kinda sounds silly to me. But, quite a few people are interested in their ancestry in a "finding their roots" kind of a way. I have one friend who went to Ireland because she is of Irish decent. I think when people do this, they are looking for some connectedness to something. ------------------------------------------ They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Benjamin Franklin In an encampment expecting daily attack from a powerful enemy, self-preservation is paramount to all law. - Thomas Jefferson
