I've always thought the same thing. Even if a politician appears to be sincere, the party line effectively forces them to duck questions and be adversarial. Put a bunch of politicans together in a debate and they act like children. I hate it, I really do. :( Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk "Be yourself - not what others think you should be" - Marcia Graesch Trouble with resource IDs? America being a free nation with relatively open borders. Which makes it impossible to stop people from attacking us with out being proactive. I disagree. Our oceans protected us for over 200 years. Now that the oceans are a lesser barrier, we should beef up our homeland defenses. Why are we sending the Coast Guard to the Persian Gulf when they are needed to defend our shores? Why is our National Guard being dispatched to Iraq when they are needed to defend our cities? Being proactive is likely to cause us more harm than good. Part of Osama's rationale for attacking us was the presence of US troops in Saudi Arabia. Why are our troops there? If you walk down an alley flashing a wad of 100 dollar bills, shouldn't you expect to be mugged? Likewise, if the US needlessly stations our troops in provacative locations, shouldn't we expect to be attacked? Let's bring our boys home and stop meddling in the affairs of other nations. Let's beef up our homeland defenses to the point where the US is virtually impregnable. Let's work as a positive force in the world rather than a negative force. In other words, if we give others less reason to hate us, we will be less hated.

I always thought that Shay's was one of the factors that caused the Constitution to be created ? Indeed it was. Partly because of Shay's rebellion, the Constitution formalized the US government's right to insure domestic tranquility (i.e. put down rebellions) and the 2nd amendment gave the government the right to limit weapons to "well-regulated militia".

Thomas George wrote: Instead of holding world cups like this, there should be a cricket season where every country plays every other once at home, and once away in a Test match and in an ODI. Then the best 4 teams play a best of 5 series in a semi-final; and the winners play a best of 7 final series. It is a nice idea for the sport itself but there is just one major problem... ok two: Spectators and sponsorship. Holding the CWC in one country is key for the right spirit. If you spread it all over the world then fans have to travel long distances and frankly they won't, far too much travelling between each game. Also sponsorship will be stretched to the max. Sponsors will have to discuss not just with one governmnent but 20 now. Each one demanding different rules, regulations etc. Each sponsor will need a team to handle their sponsorship in each country, rather than just one big team in one country. Cricket the sport has to sacrifice some ideals for Cricket the game. That may be, my only problem with the man is that in his position as a reporter, he sometimes has given me the impreion as being very biased ... Thats unfortuanate in my opinion because CBS has alway had an excellent tradition in journalism. On the other hand my impression of him as a journalist doen't reflect on my opinions of his patriotism or his love for thi country. I don't think the "oil" argument holds too tight on a logical base - even though independence of OPEC is a wonderful idea. But how much oil could the US purchase for, say , the 35bn "extra expenses, Iraq" they requested from congress last week? How much oil can they purchase for 1 million US$ per day? It wouldn't hurt their military expenses much, but would give quite some oil. It works, however, if you remember that Iraq is basically an El Dorado for Shrub's buddies. "Rather than being about Europe's old age, the transatlantic divide arguably has more to do with Europe's attempt to become something utterly new—and with America's inability to appreciate this. In his timely book, “Of Paradise and Power: America versus Europe in the New World Order” (Knopf), Robert Kagan argues that Europe is trying to find a “post-historical paradise”—a self-contained world built on transnational rules and negotiations. The United States, by contrast, remains “mired in history”—trapped in a Hobbesian world of power politics in which international laws are unreliable and true security depends on your ability to bash the bad guys. I hadn't thought of it that way. An interesting slant on the differences between European and US society. This is quite telling as well: American tabloids eschew the naked breasts that bounce all over their European cousins. What is political correctness but Victorian prudery in modern dress? This week some Harvard students took advantage of the weather to build a giant snow penis. Their prim contemporaries immediately destroyed it. I've got no problem with sex or nudity, but I have a huge problem with aggression or violence. I've never understood why things seem to be the other way around in the US, and probably never will. Slashdot gets a *lot* of posts, from a *lot* of people. And so, of course, most of them are crap. But if you have time to search out the good ones, it can be worthwhile. As for the whole deal with XP and a boot CD, the same story was posted here a while back, and also garnered comments of various quality. Anyone worth their salt already knows what XP security - or 2K security, or Linux security - is worth when an attacker has physical access to the system. Anyone else is still running a virus scanner and clicking strange file attachments in Outlook. shog nine Ever since i heard the voice i thought i had no choice...

I hate to extend this, but it's actually good to hear that you know something about the evils of Communism. Cubans know it well too. The brave ones fought against it, and unfortunately they relied on US support back in the Bay of Pigs fiasco. Some of them died, in battle, on the streets, and inside prisons. Heck, my dad was sent to jail for 3 years when he was just 17. Had he been a year older, he would have been there another 10 years at least. When you look at what's happening in Venezuela today, you begin to realize that it's very tough to depose the tyrant in power when he's in full control of the military. After a while, you lose hope, life goes on, you get married, have kids, and you start thinking of providing them a future in a free society. That's why many people opt for a way out, rather than rot in a jail or die fighting. And the ones who do fight, most people never hear of -- except once in a while in a Cuban radio station in Miami. The American media just shows the ones risking their lives trying to escape. As far as Poland goes, it took them over 40 years to liberate themselves from the Communists (according to this[^]). Cubans have been at it for 44 years so far. Hopefully their day will come soon. Regards, Alvaro The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing. -- Albert Einstein

Now SA has a pretty good chance of making it to the Super Six. maybe they can pull off a Pakistan which barely qualified in 1992 but went on to lift the cup. It would be a shame though, if they do not qualify. I think SA is one of the best teams today (after the Aussies). Pankaj Without struggle, there is no progress
