'fair dinkum' usually means 'dead set', or in more formal english 'I assure you that this is the case', or as a question 'are you certain that this is correct ?'. For example; Aussie1: I got up this mornin' and all four tyres on me ute were flat !!! Aussie2: Fair dinkum ? Aussie1: Yep. Example2: Aussie: Fair dinkum, she's a scorcher today. would roughly translate to 'my word, I must attest to the fact that today the weather is truly very warm'. Frank Liao wrote: Well, tell that to all the typewriter repairmen Ok, never is a bad word and I should never say never, not ever. I belive Sysadmins will be around as long as computers are around. Whatever replaces computers will have their own technicians. Just like typewriters had technicians, so do computers and so will whatever comes next. As long as the device exists, and people use it, technicians for that device will be around. Also the typewriter is different to a toaster or washing machine. Nothing has superseded a toaster or washing machine, but typewriters have been. As for Windows and *nix. X| Lets not go there. Frank Liao wrote: With Windows being easier to get things done and the new generation of users being more accustomed and knowledgeable with the computer, I may just speculate that Sys Admins will be of lower value in the future. I don't know about that. Look at all the moaning about technical support that you see, well, everywhere. Even from knowlegable guys like us there is tons of "support sucks" comments. If I had a reliable, fast and easy to access .NET support guy I would phone him virtually everyday for queries and thoughts. Computers are, at least underneath and the stuff we do, getting more complex, not less. Plus the market still is expanding so there are more developers and more need for knowledgable people. Our hosting tech guy could do with a good sysadmin to talk to. So I think there is definitley a need. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love, and to be loved in return - Moulin Rouge Alison Pentland wrote: I now have an image of you in front of the mirror in the morning, wearing your knickers, socks and shoes trying to decided if they match!

TCP classes?, Oh yes, i haven't seen anything in MFC or .NET that could be compared to all the nice network classes that Java (1.2+) provides. MFC (the code, not the result) is so ugly compared to AWT and Swing that it just ain't fair to compare, but .NET is so much a copy of the AWT approach that the extended class library makes it a winner in comparison. Deep nesting, and long functions are really just a sign that you should probably split your function up into sub functions. I find a good rule of thumb is to try and keep your functions about 1-2 screens in size. If you have to scroll up or down lots of screens to follow the logic of a loop, then it needs splitting up! -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

Uh huh... you could have bothered to read further i suppose: This is Martin, who i believe is a great deal smarter than he lets on,... As zhoujun already surmised, i said this, as i say most things, more or less half-seriously. If it helps, you can imagine i've got one of Mr Wulff's Magic Post Attitude Scales with the humour meter nailed at half way. Not that i'm necessarily funny, or that i can't take things seriously; i just usually don't bother. Life is short and difficult; don't waste too much time getting bent out of shape about other people's opinions. Martin Marvinski wrote: Read my response here in the soapbox Will-do. - Shog9 - Aaah... Unlike COM files EXE files can be more than 64 Kb and can have separate segment registers. In COM files CS,DS,ES and SS are all in the same 64 Kb memory segment. EXE files are also relocatable unlike COM files which are binary images of the actual code.
