I'm probably still opening my eyes from last night's sleep, but you have free banking and are complaining about service difficulties?

It isn't free, you just don't pay for it through up-front fees.

Yes - very low interest rates on current accounts.

So the people who get into debt are supported, and the people who are in credit get penalised...great country, isn't it?

I use Santander - had only one small problem with them in 20+ years, and that was sorted very quickly and efficiently. Their internet banking is ok - it's becoming a bit of a pain as they keep increasing the security so they now send me a text with a code I have to use before any transfer will happen, but that's only a pain because the mobile doesn't get any signal indoors and I have to go to the bottom of the garden and stand in the greenhouse.

Santander are screwing up all over the shop at the moment, this is because they have made a load of acquisitions very quickly and are struggling to manage and merge everything together. I've been rowing with them for months over an account of mine that they now own.

Dear UK CPians, My bank sucks monkey [deleted] and blows back chunks. I've been with them for over 25 years but I have had enough of their incompetence. I won't go into how they've [deleted] up this time as I don't think that CP has the bandwidth. Suffice to say, I will be changing my bank as soon as I can sort out the current crap. Now for the question part. Which is the least suckity of the banks in the UK? Based on the hive mind, I'll probably go the other way. :-D

I have had normal accounts with NatWest, Lloyds, HSBC, Halifax over the years, and have had loads of trouble with all of them for various reasons. I'm not sure there are any that do not suck. I am currently back with NatWest after a 15 or so year absence, and finding them mostly adequate (in that they haven't annoyed me as much as the others have recently). They have an easyish to use online system, and send text alerts accurately. I have also found their personal touch in branch better than many others recently.

I once received a letter from GE Bank telling me my account was in arrears by zero pounds, and for this they were charging me 20 pounds and 20 pounds for the letter to tell me about it. I phoned to tell them and they said "Yes, that is right". Some months later when I owed them a few hundred pounds they took me to court. I again phoned and asked if they were sure they wanted to do that they stopped everything. I wrote and complained, they sent me ten pounds compensation. About a year later they started up action again.

Just remembered, it is illegal in the UK to get financial advice from someone who isn't qualified to give it. My brother is a financial adviser, but I don't think he's very good at it. We're both still skint.

I have never had any problem with the RBS probably been with them now for 35+ years. Have several accounts with them (current and savings), the kids CTF's are with them, offset mortgage with them, have previously used their share trading without any hassle, and also have credit card with them. Use their online banking all the time, easy to move money around, pay bills, manage DDs and SOs no problem. Any time I have needed to speak with someone they are helpful, and the teller staff are always happy to help.

Just remembered, it is illegal in the UK to get financial advice from someone who isn't qualified to give it. My brother is a financial adviser, but I don't think he's very good at it. We're both still skint.

I'd never ever take finicial advice from somebody who is out to make gains from giving you information.

I've been with HSBC for 10 years with no problems. Had my card cloned once a few years back and they did an excellent job handling it

+1 for Co-Op Bank. I had good recommendations for them from 2 friends and I'm in the process of moving (after about 40 years with B* - the one with a squashed pigeon for a logo - who failed to process a transaction and failed to respond to my complaint and failed to do as the Regulator said - until he said it the second time). Good service at branch, reportedly good customer support by telephone, paying-in at any Post Office (using a free special envelope, but it takes a few days for the money to reach your account). So far, no suckage...
