Why bother assessing fitness? Just make it post the code to CP and ask for debugging help.

XKCDOTDAs I read it, the gist is that the skywriter got confused about what characters to write, and in doing so lost control of the plane. Bit too obscure in my opinion...

Agent opinionsAlas, not that easy. Even if it were, it's their word against HR.
-
Agent opinionsMy bad for assuming that they did, but no, apparently they didn't think about it.

Agent opinionsWorth a try, thanks :)

The agent is an idiot for not confirming it
True

you are also culpable here - you should have ensured it was written into your contract prior to signing
True - I assumed it was in writing already so that would be ok.

The employer is also being an arse and not showing you any respect.
I'm inclined to believe that they didn't agree it actually, but I can't be 100% sure. Agents tend to lie a lot.

Agent opinionsSo, the deal I made when moving to my current co was that I wanted X. They weren't prepared to pay X, so offered X-Y*, raising to X after a satisfactory 3 month probation period. All of this was negotiated via an agent - I think you can see where this is going... After glowing performance reviews, my employer deny having these conversations with the agent. The agent has not written anything down, but insists that the conversations did take place. Anybody got any thoughts or opinions** on the matter? * Y is a reasonable amount of money, not life changing. ** "Agents are evil" or any variant thereof is not a helpful opinion, given that we all already know it. *** In the UK, so US laws don't apply. Also, where did you find 3 asterisks in the main text?

The problem of being a programmer- Your message won't get seen here in particular (and if it does people will insult you as a rule) 1) Nobody here is going to give you general help like you're asking for, you're much better off trying stuff until you have a specific problem, at which point people are normally happy to help 2) When that does happen, make sure you use the correct forum
-
The problem of being a programmer- Exactly - the above comments implied that he made stuff up to fill the gaps, which wasn't the only option. 1) I am using the term spec loosely, it could just as easily be user story or conversation or vision statement. The conversation would have been better as: "Go to the shop and buy some jam, if they have eggs, buy six." "What are you trying to make?" "I'm baking a jam layered sponge cake" "A jam layered sponge cake would need jam, eggs and flour. Do you also need me to bring some flour?" "Why yes, that would be good, I'd not thought of that." A 1 minute conversation saved the misunderstanding about the eggs, and anticipated a future requirement which would have meant twice as much work in future if I'd not thought things through now. We still don't have a formal spec, but an understanding of the business case, "I'm making a cake" helped to get the best outcome for all parties.
-
The problem of being a programmerTrue, but if the spec is incomplete you really shouldn't be making stuff up and hoping for the best. The case above was clearly wrong because he decided to make stuff up when he didn't understand the aim of the spec. However you look at it, formally written spec or not, he needed to clarify first before coding up something useless. Extrapolating to a longer piece of code, you couldn't employ someone like that because they'd go off and code something useless and you'd only find out weeks later.
-
The problem of being a programmerI don't see that definition in the spec, so you should probably have clarified it with the BA/PM/Client (delete as applicable). If you coded it before understanding the spec you'd be an idiot.
-
The problem of being a programmerNo. $jam=1; if(GotEggs) { GetSix(); } Any competent programmer would ask what GetSix should do.
-
The problem of being a programmerI don't get it?

Must be only for tourists.....not the localsI'm a hare away from losing patience with these sorts of conversations.

Communication ProtocolLikewise, how can I believe you if you don't pay me up front? Tell you what, send me just £500,000 to start with, then you can pay the balance on completion. Just to be aware, my quote is in GBP. I once had an American expect to pay in dollars when the price was quoted in pounds before, so I'd like to avoid that mistake again if possible.
