I'm not sure this fits in here but I want to get some advise from some professional people . First let me start by saying that I used to work in NY for my company called (lets say X).I'm now in Missouri . There was a position in ST Louis Missouri for a Sr Systems Administrator so I took it because it looked like a good opportunity to live somewhere where you can afford a House . NY is so expensive especially on Long Island . So now I'm in Missouri ..In my group that I work with there is another Sr Systems Administrator so we are a team ..we are on the same level . There is also a systems administrator in my group that takes direction from both of us . Now here is where the ugly part is coming into play . The Sr systems admin that I work with is not doing his part to support the network and neglecting his duties (it seems its been this way before I got here) but doesn't want to admit that he doesn't do his job of course . We both report to a Manager in NY (cool right ? ) Well my relationship with my equal co-worker has gotten to the point that we don't talk to one another mainly cause we had a heated discussion on how he doesn't perform his duties and I seem to be doing most or all the work related to our Job function . He is slow at completing tasks and sometimes I just don't know what he does and he sits in the cube right next to me . I'm not the type to lay judgement on anyone but when your at a certain level then you should perform to your abilities or at least try . So my problem is that I moved out here to Missouri and now I'm in an awkward position with this person . I have talked to my manager and asked for us to be separated in some way. I also explained allot of the things that been going on .He agreed mostly with what I had to say about this person and he said he would think about it and get back to me . I been with the company since 1997 . The only thing that is good is that I'm single not married have no kids . I do love this company I work for but I hit this road block . The problem person has been with the company for 15 years so I'm thinking that the company will not do anything about this .I think whats going to happen is that I am going to have to look for a new Job .. possibly I might want to move back to NY ... cause I miss it so much. I just want to know if anyone ever had a similar experience and what did they do ... or if anyone had any advise . Thanks for reading Chris

XP???You can run the personal version of SQL or Developer version . If you want to run the Enterprise version you would need a server OS .. Which can be Windows 2000 Server MUCH cheaper than Advanced server . You only would need Advanced Server if you were Clustering ... Hope this helps !

Question for all of you...I would suggest Goggle as a starting point ... Stuff like security is constantly changing with new Operating systems and such .. You can always do a search on security in Google and probably get a mess of hits .

accessing windows registry from other windowsHi , I believe you can mount "non active" registry hives in your "active" registry then modify it then export it back to the original location . I have done this while troubleshooting a defunct os .

I am a total newbie at programing but I have been in System Administration for a while . I would love to see a Section dedicated to total newbies that off projects and information for the beginner ... Not that anything should be in stone cause its hard to keep peoples intrests but I think I have a passion for programming even though I'm a total newbie at it .. It would be nice to see a section for newbies :) ... Or maybe there is and I haven't seen it ... Sorry for such a long e-mial ... Great Site !! Thanks Chris

Backup SoftwareCorrect John ... Veritas Version 9.0 backs up to disk although windows 2000 nt backup also backs up to disk which you might want to look at first . About the account ....We have the local Administrators group having full control on all shares on our server . Then we create a Domain account and place it in the local admins account .We use this account for all backups on the servers . We don't give users full control on any shares because they could cause problems .. Hope that helps .. Chris

Cannot delete a fileAndy H wrote: We have a Win2K Pro laptop which has a file of size 1.99Mb is size. It is not an OS protected file, but when attempting to delete it the OS advises that it is already open. This even happens after a reboot. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we can do to get rid of this damn file. You cab probably boot up into recovery console and delete it from there ... Hope this helps . It may be that this is a service file that is being used. In which case you can stop the service then delete the file . Chris :-D

Win 2000 page trackingAre you talking about having IIS on the box also ? If so IIS keeps a log file in C:\winnt\system32\logs (I think) . It should have all the information as for as who is accessing the site that your hosting . If your looking for something professional . Webtrends makes a nice product that can gives you a Web interface that shows how many people access your site but might be alittle pricey .... Hope that helps .... Chris F.

If it crashes at random parts of the day memory might be the cause ... Any error messsages in the event viewer ?

Once Again, Into the FTP FrayHi Roger , For one you didn't post your error message anywhere that I can see .Another is that I'm pretty sure that the account has to have log on locally priveleges . That is why I said to create a local account on the box for each user and lock it down on the NTFS level for each directory . Thats not anonymous because you need to know the account and password for you to connect .It just won't let anyone connect . Thanks Chris

Once Again, Into the FTP FrayHi Roger , The way I have mine setup is : 1) create a local account on the FTP server . 2) Don't mess with the security on the Directory (I have everyone full control) unless you want to restrict access to some users for certain directories . They will connect to the FTP root directory with the account you created for them . Then they will be able to access the files . Of course my setup is not very secure but I wasn't going for security .I just wanted to get something up and running and working of course :) Hope this helps ... Chris Federico

Terminal Services and Maximum Connections ExceededRemember to avoid this situation you have to tell your admins to log off when done with TS and not to disconnect . Disconnecting leaves these sessions connected ... Just some advice ... Chris

Need some career AdviseHI Everyone , I'm new here to the Code Project site . Many of you at one time or another ,or multiple times ask yourself about where your headed in your career . Well lately I'm asking this question . I have been a Lan Administrator for 3 years ...I'm suddenly in a position to take on multiple tasks at my Job that involve programming . They are Tivoli(scripting mostly) , SQL ,VB,HTML,Oracle,Perl,Javascript. Now the problem I is that since I don't come from a programming background this stuff is very hard to grasp because I have never seen it before . I really love the idea of programming and would like to switch to more programming full time . I'm 31 years old and I want to get some advise (especially from people that have switched from a Lan administration position to a programming position ) on how I would go about it . I mean the building that I work in is full of programmers and developers.Am I just dreaming here ? Or can someone with my background make the switch ... mind you that I don't have a College degree but I have been to technical school . I have taken Microsoft (MCSE) courses and I'm knowledgable in a Windows enviorment of how things work . My weaknesses seem to be scripting and programming in general . I have started teaching myself perl from a book and C++ from a book which has turned out to be really good even though I'm just scratching the surface (I/O,Data types,Functions,Structs so far ) . So for the long post but I would appreciate some advise good or bad :-D Thanks for reading Chris
