I've read an article about a few WebAsm's potential vulnerabilities. (Wish I could remember where, sorry.) I recall being suspicious. WebAsm run inside the same sandbox as JavaScript itself. They are peer technologies. So any vulnerability in WebAsm should also be in JavaScript. The article I read didn't reference that fact at all. The article also seem to forget that WebAsm was meant to run inside a browser. To me the article felt like a hit piece. True that WebAsm's biggest use to date has been malware. Sad to see any new tech abused like that. I've also recently read about JavaScript cyrpt miners being included in website ads. It's frustrating cuz crypto miners on website could be a whole new way to fund websites instead of using ad networks. But the idea is getting a bad reputation. :(

    C crazedDotNetDev

Disclaimer: I've disliked JavaScript since learning it in the late 90s, early 00s. That might be an unpopular opinion, but certainly not an uncommon one. That said, I use server-side Blazor now and love it. It doesn't have quite the scalability of other web tech, but the server-side functionality is (close to) unique and fascinating. I'm flipping a site to client-side Blazor now... so more on that later. Is it worth learning... IMHO, this tech is different enough I feel most would benefit from its perspective. WebAsm (in general) has many years behind it, and made it as a browser standard before Blazor existed. (That alone is a feat.) So it's here to stay. Will non-JavaScript haters gravitate to it? Good question; time will tell. WebAsm should have slightly faster load & execution times. But I feel not enough for that to be a practical factor in most cases. Dependency control will be a much greater factor in performance. In the end it's just a tool. One I personally hope will dislodge JavaScript, but that's just one code-monkey's opinion. ;P

  • Cheap .NET hosting
    C crazedDotNetDev

In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with Azure. Everyone has different levels of “hobbyist”. A better idea would be to setup a budget and see who (and what products) fit inside it. I hosted ~many~ sites in Azure for free. I wanted custom domains, Let’s Encrypt support, and a few others features… so I setup a VM which costs me around $50 a month. I now run a dozen (or so) sites on that VM, setup a Kubernetes cluster, got gigs in block storage, and other stuff… for around $200. Personally, I feel free is usually a lie and never worth the actual cost. Besides, companies pay for Azure, AWS, and Google cloud experience. Not so much the smaller providers. Spending a little bit of $ might help to you land a high paying job.

I’ve been a fan of Ubuntu[^] for a few years now. It’s got good support and is solid enough for everything I’ve needed so far. As for Database… • MS SQL[^] is just amazing. • MySQL[^] is adequate for most needs. • SQLite[^] is very small and portable. • PostgreSQL[^] has tons of cool add-on features. As for Languages… • I’m all-in for .NET Core[^] & Standard. Nothing else matters. • But if I ever leave .NET, I’ll probably go for C++. I hear it’s not the C++ I knew in the 90s.

I can vouch for the big scary dog design. We live next door to a 40 acre public park and have problem with drug dealers (& other idiots) every few years. Early on we had an 80-90 pound mutt that looked like a Rottweiler. We got the reputation for owning Cujo[^]. Sadly he died several years ago, but don’t tell the drug dealers that! ;P These days I’d suggest a Chow Chow[^]-German Shepherd[^] mix. The shepherd should give the animal good intelligence. The Chow Chow should make it very loyal to you/your family. I’ll need to be very strict with the dog as it grows… know exactly how you want it to respond and train it as a puppy. We did this with a beautiful brindle chow-shepherd mix that was loving and very playful. But look out if she didn’t know you and you walked on our property… she’d put the fear of God in you!

  • Great Confusing Problem with VB.NET developers
    C crazedDotNetDev

I have similar sentiments and history. I started (professionally) in VB 3/4 back in the late 90s. I also know a dozen different languages and several platforms. I was forced into C# about 3ish years ago. The kicker is I actually agreed with the move; it made good business sense… and made me a bit sad. I’ll always be in love with BASIC. Its current face is VB.NET, but who knows where that’ll be in the future. The simple truth is that Microsoft backs C# more than VB. As I recall, in .Net Rocks Episode # 1140 (@ 43 minutes) Jay Schmelzer talks about how new language features will usually be in C# first, then added to the others. It’s sucks, but that’s the way it is. Quell the automatic reaction and ask yourself why. My opinion is that it is Java’s fault. Microsoft is trying to attract Java devs to .NET. C# can get that job done, VB can’t.

    Quote:

Many peoples told that c# is better than vb.net...

Anybody who says C# is “better” than VB.net is an idiot. (Or even VB.net is “better” than C#) They simply don’t understand the .NET platform. Inform them if you can, but try not to argue. It’ll make you look as dumb as them. Microsoft’s brilliance is .NET… not VB, C#, or F#. They are just tools.

    Quote:

But problem is that i can,t code in c# same as in vb.net

I also tended to write code in VB, and then translate into to C#. Practice will make it more nature.

    Quote:

I love vb but what should i do while markete don,t have demand of vb?

People still write COBOL!!! They’re not as many COBOL jobs today, but they still exist. They’ll also be harder to find. I’d suggest figuring out what you want to do: be a VB.NET specialist or a generalist able to do both VB and C#. Then take a look at the job market(s) you have access to. Do enough possible jobs exist to support a specialist? If it does, then raise your rates and apply. If it doesn’t, well, either become a generalist or move to a different market.

I've used LINQ in both C# and VB.net... a lot. Once again, there is no real difference between the two languages. C# has better syntax; it makes you look smarter. VB.net gives you a better idea of what's actually happening; it educates you. .NET is the magic here. C# and VB.net are just twin languages riding its glory.

  • Need Advice On How To Handle This
    C crazedDotNetDev

DUDE --> GET A LAWYER… GET A LAWYER… GET A LAWYER… GET A LAWYER… GET A LAWYER!!!!! Do you actually "own" that code? What's in the contract? How does CA's law play into this? Can the "code" be considered abandoned? Where do the servers operate... US or Canada; how do those local laws effect this situation? Can some legal precedent set in a local court be harmful/helpful? Could disabling that software be considered a move to hold it for ransom? I'm basically trying to say the situation is complex and should require legal research. Do you have that kind of legal skill? Even if you do, are you willing to take on that kind of professional (even personal) risk? Hire a lawyer skilled in corporate and international law. Take his/her advice. They might even say that it's not possible to "win" or it's not worth the financial cost. Don't let this situation become self-destructive. If the lawyer says you can "win" then let the lawyer exact your revenge... you just sit back and smile.

  • The things you learn writing your own web server
    C crazedDotNetDev

Dude, you had me at "yucky ducky languages/frameworks like Ruby on Rails"! Back in the early 2000’s I wrote a very thin "web server and client" that ran on a set of AS/400s. Certain events would send data to the AS/400s via HTTP and internal AS/400 events would shoot data out of the AS/400 over HTTP. Thankfully I didn’t have to be concerned with browser stupidity, but spent many days buried in HTTP’s rfc.

  • Loop exit
    C crazedDotNetDev

It depended on the specific language’s implementation. The general rule was it exits from the innermost loop. I seem to remember VB (pre .NET) was able to break from nested loops…

    do while true
    for i = 1 to 10
    if i > 5 then
    exit do
    end if
    next
    loop

I also got something rattling around in my skull about exiting from named loops, but I don’t believe that was a BASIC language. Google/Bing isn’t being helpful at the moment. :(

  • Cutting the cable
    C crazedDotNetDev

I ditched cable 14 years ago & still loving it. I’ve used Hulu & Netflix forever; more recently started purchasing movies & tv on Xbox video. I’ve gotten into the habit of getting into a show on Netflix then purchasing the season on Xbox. Don’t forget about Crackle also! Cable is dead and they know it. Providers just don’t want to give it up. The latest stupid trend is to allow streaming IF you already have a cable subscription. (checkout HBO Go) A probable game changer is Aereo . They’re current fighting “the broadcasters” in Supreme Court. Their setup is the install antennas in all major cities, then DVR/stream whatever you ask them to. They’ve got my $$$ if they can get a setup local to me.
