I disagree. This is the stance that Netscape took, which ultimately made them a nonplayer - they went from Market dominance to being an ankle bitter. Rewriting a large system from scratch is rarely a good idea, and if attempted, those attempting had better continue to allocate resources to the old system. Here are a few reasons why I think doing so is a bad idea: 1) The system is too big for a small group of people to understand well, so there is probably a LOT of small, seemingly insignifant lines of code that addressed one of the numerous bugs discovered over the years. That code is the product (albeit not perfect ;-) of years of realworld use. 2) Developing from scratch drastically reduces a business's ability to adapt to changing market conditions; a certain foundational threshold would have to be obtained before a lot of the feature set could be built. 3) Inevitably it would have an incremental release where funtionality is lost, possibly alienating users accustomed to having that functionality. 4) Nothing is any good until version 3 anyway, at which it would be bloated and time for yet another rewrite. ;-) Daniel Wilson

Give me your walletDavid Wulff wrote: Only advisable in areas where they don't carry knives, unless you are Paul 'that's not a knife, this is a knife' Hogan. That had to be the most memorable line from the Crocodile Dundee flicks. I still laugh when I think about it.

Give me your walletI have a bifold Fossil wallet that I really like unfortunately; I wasn't able to find the exact version on the website. I used to use trifolds but now that I have a bifold, I have found the slimness to be much more comfortable. Also, it has a flip out ID holder, which if you are like me and get carded all the time, is a nice thing to have to prevent unnecessary wear and tear. Also, I find that I can drive more comfortably while carrying a bifold than with the thicker trifold versions. Something I have recently started using is a card holder found here: http://www.kennethcole.com/scripts/shop/product.asp?pid=2694&cc=KMWAL&title=&pw=thumbnail&var=0[^] It was a gift and I found that if I keep the business cards I need in my wallet and take this along when I know I will be given plenty of cards and asked for mine, I am less likely to add too much to my wallet and deform it. I've lost mine multiple times, so I have given a fair amount of thought to the perfect combination. Thin is the way to go if you carry it with you. Plenty of individual pockets for the required cards is a must to prevent wear and tear (I find that I carry about 13 cards if I include credit cards, grocery store cards, etc) instead of larger pockets for multiple cards. For some reason (maybe because I am cheap) black wallets tend to wear less gracefully than a traditional brown one. My 2 cents, Daniel Wilson

Hilarious Court CasesThe movie that picture comes from is a pretty funny movie if you like Norm McDonald. Dirty Work is the name of it if I recall correctly.

Hilarious Court CasesI used to work at a grocery store in rural NC (part of the US) and about once a month a lady would come in who often pointed out that she was trying to "grow out her beard"... and sure enough by the time I left for school she had a solid 1.5 of hair... Strange but true.:omg: -Daniel Wilson

Programming competitionNever competed in any of the ACM competitions since my interest in computers began after I left school. However, for the IMO (a math variant for high schoolers) and related competitions it was definitely the real deal. Waterloo does have some talented individuals. I think Derek Kisman went there who is a top competitor on http://www.topcoder.com/tc[^] known as SnapDragon. A lot of the people I used to compete with in math competitions do quite well there. Congratulations on the 4th place finish. Where you a member of the team? Regards, Daniel Wilson

JOTDWhen a statistician passes the airport security check, they discover a bomb in his bag. He explains. "Statistics shows that the probability of a bomb being on an airplane is 1/1000. However, the chance that there are two bombs at one plane is 1/1000000. So, I am much safer..." I thought this one was especially funny. -Daniel Wilson

managers who shouldn't be managersI have been struggling with similiar issues recently and here is what I came up with. At the heart of the matter, for me, is that there are times I want my boss's technical knowledge and understanding to rival (or exceed) my own, so that I can have someone to learn from and repect for their technical prowess. However, my boss doesn't understand a lot of the technical aspects of my job and she will admit this to me. Given this, I don't have much to gain from her in the technical arena - focusing on this only exaggerates the problem for me. Instead I try to remind myself of the things she is exceedingly good at like ensuring that everyone is satisfied and up to date on problems, being sympathetic and gaining the trust of other execs, diffusing potentially explosive arguements quickly and gracefully, etc. In other words everyone is good at something and focusing on the areas my boss can help me improve in and the ones I can look to her for guidance in makes it much easier for me to not be bothered when she doesn't meet my technical expectations. Take care, Daniel Wilson

Someone please help me!!!I am not sure what a geocacher is but I will give you an additional clue: Using a "hex" one can change 3775928559 to something of the form ****BEEF. (Where * represents a single character) With the blanks field in one could say the result could make PETA pretty mad. ;-)

Web App Installation SampleHello everyone, Does anyone know where I can find either of the following 1) A lightweight product that makes it very easy to create a simple web application installer program that installs a Database on a SQL Server, creates a web app, and loads the files for the application to a directory or 2) A sample application with source code that does something similiar. Thanks, Daniel
