  • Standing desks experiences/recommendations
    G Guy Harwood

Luckily I have had no issues with mine at all. I have seen reviews where people mention their bad experiences with the motor. Regarding stability - no complaints here. If I type hard enough my monitor does wobble a little, but only when stood up and leaning on the edge of the desk. The one in the review looks extremely small compared to mine... My Desk

6 months ago I bought one of these from IKEA based on a recommendation from a colleague (we work remotely) I love it, and it definitely makes a difference to stand for parts of the day Not cheap, but worth it in my opinion.

  • Using a Mac, [a bit over] a week later
    G Guy Harwood

Cut is done at the paste destination by using CMD+ALT+V Show path in finder footer Via view menu (or finder preferences, can't recall). Tags can be very useful in finder if you use the file system a lot. Familiarise with finder preferences difficult to perform basic tasks- can copy but not cut. Rename is insane - need to go to the "Get Info" popup and do it there, from the people who criticised MS for putting shut down in the start menu. No real sense of where you are in the file system - I want to be able to navigate a path

  • iPhone 6 vs Android phones
    G Guy Harwood

I switched from an iPhone 5S to android, and wasnt happy until i got a HTC One M8 (i tried nexus 5, and galaxy note 3 before that). HTC have refined android in subtle but nice ways, and overall its a polished user experience. As much as i like the look of the iPhone 6 plus, i just cannot go back to iOS as android has so many nice little touches that make it better to use. i do miss the camera quality of the iPhone though!

Have you used 2012 for a straight week? i despised it at first, but after a week or so i found it more fluid. definitely easier to work in once you get used to it. the 2010 UI seems jarring when i open it now.

  • Ubuntu
    G Guy Harwood

I have done this exact same thing in the last week. Very impressed with Ubuntu, love the way they have done the dash, software center and settings section. My external usb soundcard (EMU 0202) was identified and works perfectly, yet the vendor does not support ubuntu, and it requires a separate driver install on windows 7 to even be identified! The only reason to hang on to windows at all is for Visual Studio, SQL Server and iTunes

  • Resharper? What's the big deal?
    G Guy Harwood

I was tasked with refactoring a major component in one of our products recently. It would have been a complete nightmare without resharper. The 'Find usages' tool, 'Safe Delete', 'Move type/method to another namespace', 'reorder/remove method parameters' and various other functions are so very useful in certain circumstances.

I am just wondering - what is the best way i can convince them to use .NET technology instead of PHP and sql server instead of mysql. But then they can say Facebook uses PHP and it's good.

If you cant think of a good reason yourself then maybe you need to look into it a bit more. Ive been a .net developer since it was introduced and only just started learning php recently out of curiosity. I think as a developer its wise to learn php. Given its mass adoption you never know when you might need those skills (like, right now!) Its not that difficult to pick up and there are a lot of good introductions to it available online (try w3schools for example) You just gotta weigh up whether the end solution they want will be difficult to achieve in php being a 'newbie' to the language and framework.

the intention I'm seeing is that all NEW code first, followed by existing code later.

Such a waste of time and money unless there is a bonafide real world reason to change it that will benefit both customers and the product in general. If your development team are versatile enough to work in either language, then there seems like no good reason to rewrite existing code into another language other than for Mr.New Director to 'make his mark'.
