Interesting. I have found no link between being a smoker (cursed spawn of hell that should be burned at the stake) and being a good programmer. Thinking back, I know good programmers who smoke, and good programmers that don't. The best programmer I know abhors smoking, drinking and anything else that she doesn't do.

I tend to try and make my software as portable as possible. Obviously with the work I usually do (all in assembly) it's more-or-less impossible. But still, I do try to make an effort as some applications we develop have to run on different architectures or operating systems from the beginning.

Common sense prevailing over evil? Bah. You don't get proper evil these days. In my day evil could, with once glance, turn you into a small and tarnished brass door knob. I found some evil under my pillow once. It smelled bad. I've no idea how it got there. I agree with what you say, however.
