  • How does the VS resouce editor work?
    K Kri5

Hi everyone, I have always held some kind of a fascination with the resource editor in Visual Studio. I could never understand how VS allows a user to drag/resize/modify buttons, edit boxes, and other controls on a dialog inside a window. Can anyone throw some light on the matter? Thanks!

  • Recommended study guides for MCPD
    K Kri5

Hi all I intend to start studying for an MCPD certification (Enterprise stream), and I'm thinking of doing the studying on my own by following study guides (i'm a fairly experienced c/c++ developer transiting to the c#/.net world). Can anyone recommend any study guide series which i can purchase (e.g. Microsoft, ExamCram, etc) that covers the required material and also includes practice exams? Tnx!

  • Poincare conjecture
    K Kri5

I agree the proof may not be so important to a layman, but it may certainly be of immense help to other scientists working on hair-raising fields of science, maybe even in a few years time in the future. This has already happened countless of times: when George Boole came up with Boolean Algebra some 100 years back, no one could find an application for it, and i guess a considerable number of people could not appreciate it back then, but look where we are now thanks to that. Same with Claude Shannon and his Information Theory that now finds applications in data encoding for compression, MP3's and satellite communications; and John Nash and his Game Theory that finds applications in economics, political sciences and biology, to name but a few. This proof could also herald a new way of looking at things; for example, when Einstein tried to apply Newtonian laws on acceleration and time to the universe, he found out that the laws break down completely because gravitation comes into effect. Coming up with a new mathematical model he predicted that light travelling through space is 'bent' by a gravitational field, and was proved correct when astronomers witnessed the lensing effect (that's what i think it's called, i.e. when earth-based telescopes can see stars that lie behind a big planet). Same with Euclidean geometry, i.e. the x-y coordinate system, we are so used to. The shortest distance between 2 points in 2D and 3d spaces is the straight line that joins them, but this breaks down completely on a curved space such as a sphere because the shortest distance between 2 points would be the greatest curve (in fact, ever wondered why the plane goes over Greenland when flying from London to San Francisco, for example..?) Mathematics is the language of science, and personally i find it fascinating that a phenomenon can be explained with one formula or proof that works under all conditions, which might explain why this proof was hard. With mathematics, you have to keep in mind that the theory and proofs have to be rigorous. Some scientists see strong proofs as 'beautiful', and i guess i can't blame that. The fact that this proof has been found after around 100 years (i think it was that much, no?) shows how hard the problem was, and is undeniably a great success. By the way, I read that the proof is around 470 pages long - makes some interesting bed-time reading :) -- modified at 4:01 Wednesday 23rd August, 2006

  • Artificial Intelligence
    K Kri5

First you have to lay down the definition of 'intelligence'. Lots of people have mistaken ideas of how to define intelligence. If it's defined as problem-solving, or the ability to memorize (which are wrong definitions anyway), then most programs, even a simple calculator would be classified as intelligent. Most people even find it hard to distinguish between learning and intelligence. My own definition of intelligence (after having pondered on it as part of my studies too, involving lots of discussions, heated debates and programming AI....oh my miss those good ol' days... :) ) is the ability to learn with the minimal resources. And how would i define learning? It's the ability to generalise, form concepts, abstractions, from what you see around you. For e.g. you learn what car is by simply looking at two or three cars, and then form the generalisation that cars have wheels, windows, an engine, etc. Clearly all this leads to the conclusion that an 'IF' statement is not AI. Rather, it is a logic instruction that an AI process needs to use, such as in the car example: IF it has wheels/engine/windows/etc, THEN it's a car. (I hope i didn't do the assignment for you ;P )

  • Wrapper to function with varargs
    K Kri5

I have a function in a DLL which takes varargs. I only have the header file of the DLL. Is there a way how i can provide a wrapper for the function with varargs? For e.g. if the function definition is as follows: int average( int first, ... ); // calculate average of a series of integers ..how can i provide a wrapper for it? I'm stuck here: int averageWrap(int first, .../*how do i handle varargs here?*/) { return average(first, ... /*how do i pass the varargs params?*/); } Thanks _________________________ Kri5 -- modified at 5:50 Thursday 13th April, 2006

Just an idea for the site admins: why don't you start a system whereby people who ask "how-do-i-do.." type of questions are either demoted or have their points subtracted? The problem is never going to go away until some steps are taken to curb it. Hard-liner, i know, but can't be otherwise with some people. _________________________ Kri5

Hehe i put that on purpose ;) True enough though, i was working for a startup a few years back, and late hours at the office were the order of the day. I always managed to go home to sleep; however, very often i would go back in the morning and find someone sleeping either in the board room on the floor, or in a car in the basement garage. _________________________ Kri5

  • Suggestion for a TFTP server/client library for C#/.NET
    K Kri5

Anyone knows a good TFTP client and server libraries for .NET? The majority of vendors supply only client-side libraries. So far I only found Abderaware that supplies both, but would like to find a few others to be able to compare prices and performance. Any other suggestions? Tnx. _________________________ Kri5

  • Configure BITS on Win2Ksp3
    K Kri5

We tried that already. We installed BITS 2.0 redistributable for Win2k (the same one featured in your link). This is our problem: on Win2003 we get a 'BITS Server Extensions' tab in the IIS MMC configuration for directory properties, to enable BITS uploads to a virtual directory. We cannot find the same tab anywhere on the Win2K IIS MMC configuration after we install the redistributable. Any further ideas?
