My wife and daughters are Jewish and whilst it is an important day that should be remembered, and had we been in Europe at the time we would have been in trouble, what I have noticed that a lot of Jewish people I know don't like to dwell on the issue, possibly to painful for them. My wife did not know that it was today even.

  • Are recruitment agencies to full of them selves?

I am in a very different situation to most. It is a small company and as part of the deal, I get a sizable stake in the company I work for. You do not get that in most places.

  • Are recruitment agencies to full of them selves?
    M Manique

Maybe, but my loyality is to my family, and if have have a better quality of life by taking the counter offer than so be it. Any way, the way a lot of the lay-offs in the recession can hardly be said to have been done in a profesional manner - most where knee-jerk reactions.

I'm resigned to relegation, spare a thought, but it would be a nice gesture against the FA and the BBC if Pompey got to the final.

I just had to turn down a software developer job offer with a large American Company (but based in the uk), I won't say who they are but they make normally printers. I originally said yes, but my current employer gave me an offer I could not afford to refuse. The reply from the agency tried to pour on the guilt, "they are very disapointed" and "they had been very patient waiting for my paper work" were some of the things said. What tripe. They made we wait months after the interview and they have made masses of people redundant in the past. I just think the agency miss the commision. And how can the whole of a large corp be disappointed? - are they the Borg? A flexible work force has to work both ways, not just in favour of employers. Anyway I going to watch Pompey Vs. Tottenham on Sunday (FA Cup Semi Final), so that will take my mind of it.

  • Should I stay or should I go?

This is not about the Clash, but about whether I job offer I have is worth taking. I have worked for a small software house for the last 5 years (and another similarly sized one before that for another 5 years). I have always wondered what it would be like to work for a big software house. In the last month I have recieved an offer from HP (the part that used to be EDS in the UK). The money is only a little better, but I keep thinking to myself, it would look good on my CV and I would get the chance to work on some really meaty projects....however I keep reading horror stories from ex-employees on the web, what experiences fellow code project members had of working for them and is it worth just passing the opportunity and waiting for something else? I am aware that few people post good things about a place if they are happy there, so I am taking the bad stories with a 'pinch of salt'. At the moment I am 50-50. I would greatly appreciate any comments.

I have been looking for a good tutorial for getting into Jquery and I came across Ricks article (link). I have been through both parts and now become a JQuery convert. It (the article) is well written and I like the way he cuts through all the complicated theory and gives you everything thing you need to start developing quickly with confidence. I have used his articles before (for things such as the Pay Pal API and Web Server balancing) and found those excellent. Rick....many thanks. Steven Elliott (Manique)

  • Learning new skills vs. Family
    M Manique

For those of married with children, how do you dedicate time to learning new stuff? I have to keep a Software Development book in the car (at the moment it’s on WPF) and read it when ever I am waiting outside the nursery/school/hairdressers/shop/house waiting for the wife to finish getting ready. When the children are finally asleep and the wife is watching some celebrity drivel on ITV2, at around 10pm I can finally try out some of the stuff I have read about. There has got to be a better approach than this. S Elliott (Manique) I have got to think of a decent signature

  • Mobile web Application in Asp.net
    M Manique

I tried using the MS ASP.net Mobile toolkit to generate WML but I found support for it lacking. Microsoft appears to have forgotten about it. With this in mind, I developed my mobile site using simple html, I gave WML a wide berth. Most modern mobile phones support a sub-set of html anyway. Steven
