    M Marshall

I learned from a book titled “C++ How to Program” by Harvey and P.J. Deitel. (ISBN 0131173340) This was about 15 years ago, but I’ve seen new editions since that time. I’m not saying this is THE best book for learning C++ - just saying it’s the one I used. I’ve made a good living writing C++ code ever since then, so I’d say it was at least helpful in getting me transitioned to C++ and OOP (from C and COBOL).

Yeah, I've heard that about Australia. It's very much behind the times, especially in terms of technology. Take CodeProject for example. This #1 meeting place for software developers worldwide is something that could never be created by an Australian. It takes someone very smart and very hard working like Chris Maunder to create something like this. And everyone knows Chris is from... What? Oh, REALLY? Uh... never mind.

a 2 bedroom apartment is renting in Yantai for between USD$6,560.00 and USD$10,933.00 a month.

I went off line and contacted quiqul63 to find out more. From what he tells me, his rent is absolutely in line with his income of $350/month. In fact his monthly expenses are very similar to mine in terms of percentage of income (Much less for rent). Certainly he couldn't afford $10k/month. So the rates you saw must be for Westerners (are we considered Westerners by the Chinese?) and not for the locals. Of course there is a question of "standard of living" but I don't have any trustworthy information to evaluate that. Because of the media bias that you've already mentioned, I have the opinion that a "typical" house in the US is of a higher standard of living than a "typical" house in China. But I admit to being poorly informed since I have never been to China and never seen what the "typical" house there is like. I'll also admit to some of the American bias that causes us to think life is better here than everywhere else. I like to think that's part of patriotism, but it might just be ego... :~

I understand your point and I agree. Thanks for bringing this up. When it comes to money, especially someone's salary, it is easy to put on blinders and think of things only as they apply to you. I was trying to think past that. Comparing my US salary to the salary in China has to be done carefully to avoid being insensitive to the differences in culture and local economy (not to mention the egos involved). That's why I admitted I don't know enough about the area to make that comparison. I only know enough to attempt to be respectful and hopefully keep my foot out of my mouth! I am fortunate to do a lot of work in Japan. And if I've learned one thing from that experience, it is that sensitivity and respect of other cultures can go a long way to overcome ignorance! :)

I live in the Seattle area. (NW USA) I know of less experienced developers in this area who earn about $70k USD. Most of the engineers I know are in a range around $100k - $150k. (These values are annual salary in USD.) Maybe that helps. But those values really need some context. I want to believe a house in Yantai China costs a bit less than one in my neck of the woods. So it’s all relative to some extent.

This is a very good answer! At least it is a good answer for a software engineer in the US and probably many other places where we are free to work for anyone, in any country. But this might not be the case where the government exercises more control over what someone does for a living and/or who they can work for. At least half of my work is outside the US (Japan & Europe). I don't know enough about some parts of the world such as Yantai China, to know what is possible there. But I DO know that I do not change my rate based on location. Personally I have decided what my time is worth. If it is too high for a certain company or project, then they will not use me. I'm ok with that.

That's a tough spot to be in. I had to work in the back of my van for a couple days once while my electricity was out. At least I could run the AC. I can't work well in the heat. Sweat dripping down my face onto the keyboard just doesn't work for me. This is the only algorithm I can come up with considering that heat: uber-rich out of town + No electricity/alarm systems = POOL PARTY on Gordon Drive!

  • Vista Securities and Protections
    M Marshall

A constitutional right. I seem to hear that phrase a lot. It's almost as popular as bashing Microsoft or praising Open Source software. I notice the writer lives in the UK. I don't know much about Constitutional Monarchy as they have there. But in the US where I live, the constitution does not specifically provide protection for one's ability to read or modify files on a computer. However, the first amendment made to the constitution does give one the right to complain about not having that right. :-D I suppose it could be argued that the ninth amendment provides some sort of right to jack around with those files, but I doubt you'd get much support from a jury in a US court, even though your right to go to court and plead your case to a jury over this issue is definitely protected by the seventh amendment. You see, it turns out that the fellas who wrote the US constitution were not very computer savvy. They actually wrote it on parchment. Now maybe if they had Vista and were not able to get to some obscure file containing proprietary code that IS protected by US and international law (but not the constitution), they might have put something about that in the constitution. But for some odd reason they were more interested in things like establishing justice, national defense, and "the Blessings of Liberty." Personally, I don't think that's such a bad thing.

  • Yikes - Adobe Trial Software Bug
    M Marshall

Just a minor bug. Everyone is on vacation in June anyway, right? Who will notice? :~ From the Adobe support site: During the month of June 2008, certain product trials that are launched for the first time (regardless of when they were installed) will function for only one day instead of 30 days, due to an error in a line of code that counts down the remaining days in a trial. You will not experience this issue if you have launched your trial before June 1, 2008, or do not launch it until July 1 or thereafter. And: Trials are currently unavailable Product trials are unavailable until July 1. We apologize for any inconvenience. For additional details, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Pardon me for saying so, but it sounds to me like you are in way over your head. You are simply writing code without any understanding of what it means. I suggest you slow down, read and understand the documentation. Then think about how each object works and how you can manipulate it to accomplish your goal. If you do that, you will quickly see the answer to your question. Getting fast answers on the web is not going to help you in the long run. I am not trying to insult you and hope you see that. I am only trying to give you good advice. Marshall

Yes. If you are drawing in a graphics container, you can set the SmoothingMode to AntiAlias. This will not affect the text, but will affect lines in the container. Check out the MSDN documentation for Graphics.SmoothingMode. Marshall

  • Catch C++ exception in C#
    M Marshall

    Not Knuth wrote:

I can not change the code in the DLL. How can I catch these (C++) exceptions and get the string info they contain?

I have recently encountered a similar situation. After a good bit of research and testing I can tell you that the best approach is to wrap the DLL in a managed assembly where you catch the C++ exception and then throw a managed exception in its place. (As described previously in the reply from led mike.) You can grab the string out of the C++ exception and insert it in one of the exception classes defined in the framework or in your own derived from one of them. The framework doesn't provide any method to automatically marshal the string message in a C++ exception to a managed object. Marshall
