  • On Polygamy
    N Nitron

So now that the US has seemed to begin to embrace same-sex marriage, why is polygamy still illegal? If I can convince a judge that I am 'in love' with another man, why can i not convince someone that I am 'in love' with two women? That just seems very non-inclusive and discriminatory. I mean we're talking human rights here, aren't we.. I mean whatever feels good. I bet we could even fix a lot of US debt problems if we legalize and tax 'recreational drugs' and prostitution too... (all sarcasm of course, but I'm just in a pissy mood!) your thoughts? :)

  • Goodbye To Faulty Software?
    N Nitron

Like many of the comments thus far, this is only applicable to safety-critical software that can be formally specified. The problem with 'software' in general is that most of it cannot be formally defined, or, if it were, the errors would still be there -- just abstracted to the formal spec. Also mentioned prevoiously -- try to formally prove a UI design. In my opinion, there is no single software development strategy that applies to all software. For example, the waterfall method requires the specification, design, implementation, all be done completely and correctly (or at least in sequence). This is a greatly inefficient way to develop software that has loosely-stated requirements (and you're never going to get the requirements right anyway)... Agile works only if there is a rapid prototyping framework in place. If you can't quickly build and release components to a target in an embedded environment, this approach becomes ineffective (not to mention the potential CM issues that will arise from any project of more than trivial scope). TDD? Same fate as Agile. So in essence the crux of the problem (i.e. why 'software' hasn't been pinned down like other engineering disciplines) is that the term "software" is all-encompassing and no single method is good for all applications. Don't get me wrong, technologies like Formal Methods has its place, but the idea here is that there is no 'silver bullet' or single process. It comes down to properly scoping a project, selecting the tools and techniques that best suit the project, and establishing adequatre process control such that the effort can be managed -- the continuous balance of cost, schedule, and risk.

  • Headaches...
    N Nitron

I've had 3 migraines and they suck. The first time I thought I was detaching a retina or something because i started seeing this jagged flashing light in my center FOV and it didnt go away when I closed my eyes. By the time I thought about calling the eye doc, i noticed the jagged line was moving ever so slowly to my periphery... after about ~30 mins, it vanished out of view. (phew, i wasn't going blind)... well, not even 30 seconds later, I got the worst headache I ever had in my life. I couldn't even turn my head without it throbbing. I don't think I was over "sensitive" to anything (light, noise, etc), it just plain hurt, no matter what. Well, that lasted about 4 hrs, then I was fine. The second time I was building a deck out in the heat when I noticed the aura. I recognized it so wasn't worried as I knew what was comming. I took a break, grabbed a sandwich, and just sucked it up. That one only lasted ~ an hr or so, not too bad. The third one, about 6-9 months later, came on with a weak aura, just a little colored "fuzz" flashing at ~50Hz or so for about 10 mins and quickly escaped my FOV. The headach was more muted too, but it lasted almost 48Hrs! Well, i guess that really doesn't tell you much does it. Anyway, it doesn't happen enough (thankfully) to be able to tie them to a particular "trigger". However, I did notice that the days I had them, there was an unusual amount of solar activity... It may sound odd, but I think it may be related somehow. Oh well, drink about a pint of gin and you won't even notice the headache ;P

I was just considering buying it yesterday. It's not exactly necessary, but I can certainly use it.

if i weren't using it for simulation, honestly, the 30" center panel would be more than enough real estate for development. The 30" (it's a Dell 3007WPF in the center) is just insanely huge (like in an awesome-i-can't-believe-i-ever-coded-on-anything-less sort of way). but then again, it's nice to put CP up on a side panel and have MSDN over on the other, so if you have the scrilla, go get one! You'll need a beefy graphics card too, at least 512MB w/ DVI-dual-link support. (I'm driving mine with this: http://www2.pny.com/NVIDIA-Quadro-FX-4500-X2-PCIE--P1805C39.aspx[^] ) Oh, and don't mistakenly plug up the center panel with a non dual-link dvi cable... it makes it kinda work but not, like only a few select resolutions, enough to make you wonder if you have a bad vid card or driver..
