In Visual Studio, you can press Ctl-K & Ctl-D that will format your document. Same as pressing Edit>Advanced>Format Document. That will give you an indication of where the faulty area is, then, you can follow the {}'s via indention. Moving from VB to C#, for a while, I followed the convention of put in all the decorations first, before inserting code. What got me was how after a period of time using c#, coding vb, I felt like I was leaving stuff out, ... in particular the semi-colons.

  • Need Advice On How To Handle This
    N nocturns2

So you've been working for 2 years on this project. Was the project a coding project or was it a monthly maintenance plan project? If it was a coding project, have you completely satisfied your end of the contract agreement? If you haven't yet finished the project, certainly there must be some areas in the project that still need your attention. Or is that all out of the way? If it was a service you were performing for the client and he didn't pay, in the U.S., we have what is called 'Theft of Services', but you'll have to prove that your client intended to use your service without the intention of paying for it. But, then again, you're dealing with international laws. If you've completed the project, how many payments was he outstanding? There should be no reason for you to act out of character. In the U.S., it's normal for businesses to take up to 90 days to pay. You can still write it off as a business loss from your taxes. Although, you'll have to show a good faith effort in trying to collect, (i.e., send emails to the client requesting payment and stating your intentions for a reasonable period of time). Even for large amounts of outstanding balances owed to us, it's sometimes better to cut your losses and run. Figuring that the amount of time, money and thought you spend trying to collect, you could put to better use cultivating another better paying client. And, you'll write all this new learned experience into your contract so that you can have some control the next time this happens, and not have to commit a criminal act. Big rocks and little rocks and sand. Happy coding, hope you get paid!

Curious question here ... if your dns has some of the records pointing to the other guys' ip address, could the reverse also be true on that host?

I don't see it as two desktops. I see it as one desktop with an expansive start menu (oh yeah, they call it metro). When I use my win7 machines I have my desktop and a start button which opens the start menu. The start menu contains some recently used and preset programs. I can toggle between that and the all programs (to get a list of programs installed on the machine). When I use my win8 machine I have a start menu (metro, same as if I had clicked the start button on win7), except that I can organize my start menu by breaking it down to groups by categories and move the tiles to their respective groups. If I scroll down I can see all the programs installed on the machine. In either case (or computer), I can install my programs and use them on my desktop same as I've always worked on the desktop. I can develop software on either one, I can test, run, install and uninstall as well. It's just the same. Whenever I've installed upgraded versions of a previously install program, my first step is to figure out where they moved menu options. They're still there (usually), they just look different or are in a different place. It's all about how YOU look at it.

  • so how does one sell software these days?
    N nocturns2

I once read somewhere (but I don't remember who said it) that, if people know you they will listen to you, if people trust you they will buy from you. You will still need to be out there where people can see you (even if it's just digitally). You will still have to sell a sales team on your product before they can sell it for you. Unless someone sees an opportunity that your product provides for them to make money. Try to get people talking about you and your product (good, bad or indifferent).

If I were trying to determine if "ABC" exists in values then Code1. If I were trying to determine if the last element in values (s) was equal to "ABC" then Code2. I subscribe to early returns. Unless there is a reason to tenderize the value(s) before returning it.

This is what caught my attention: A huge feature list and constant feedback like from users like "we really need this" or "it would be great if we could do that", blah, blah, blah. I would break-down their feature list into cost/time objects that I could honestly deliver within the time specified for each feature. Then, make a projection as to the completion date (giving some room for any unforeseen circumstances that would add time to completion). Present that to them and let them pick which of the objects they want to complete, they would already know how much time they would have to wait for deliverables. But the most important thing, I think is the scope creep. You have to make them understand that each feature will add time to the completion date (not to mention cost, as someone here posted, don't have their post visible at the moment). I did a website about 7 years ago where the scope was firm and the quote was based on the scope. But then, the whole purpose of the site changed and I agreed to stay on, but was expected to complete it within the same time as the original purpose along with the "constant feedback, 'we really need this' or 'it would be great if we could do that', blah, blah, blah.". As well as the many websites they would ask me to look at. Each week they would like the look of one website or another. I did however, complete the project and we still have a business relation. Thanks to my caving and giving them what they wanted. Was I ever glad to finish that one! That's when I decided to never cave or deviate from the initial scope/expectations and schedule without the mutual understanding that the impact would involve time and money.
