  • We need more adblock...
    R RandyWester

We all get that if we aren't paying for a product, the product is us, and we're being sold to advertisers. It's how all 'free' entertainment, publishing, and broadcasting works. I almost bought a refurbished Dell desktop, but then they told me that 'people also bought' an ink cartridge and a breadmaker. So I didn't. I went to a real store and bought lumber, concrete mix, a shovel, and grass seed instead - which could be irrelevant, or frightening.

  • Only American and Swahili use mm/dd for dates
    R RandyWester

I don't use MM/DD/YYYY to be nice, I use it when stupid people hard code the US date format into their application instead of using the region settings, or when the corporate mandated Chrome browser doesn't know that the whole world isn't the USA. Then I have to convert it. Officially Canada uses ISO 8601, YYYY-MM-DD. Which some will inevitably abbreviate to the even more vague YY-MM-DD, just to make things a bit worse.

  • Is Software career for extroverts?
    R RandyWester

So... Game development? I'm in a career that has totally changed since I was in College. Other than that first job, the biggest benefit of higher education is probably social - making connections to people that - didn't grow up in the same place, go to the same schools and know the same people, - and whose parents weren't from the same mine / factory / office / air base / farming district / religious group. Help her learn to tell a good place to work from a bad one, and that it's fine to leave a bad, or even a fairly good job, for a better one.

  • Science ? Marketing ? Reality ?

You don't have to study the Feynman Lectures on Physics to come to a conclusion. "It's a passive electromagnetic device..." In other words, a *coil* - like the one in the utility step-down transformer, except useless (except perhaps as a line noise filter). Those who really know about electricity usually say "get rid of incandescent bulbs, and turn off things you're not using". If you're already doing that, save up and buy stock in the utility.

  • Bug of the Day
    R RandyWester

Why do Americans call it the 'Fourth of July' and write 07/04/2015? So much simpler if we all used the ISO 2015-07-04. I work with financial data that often can't be directly copied and pasted from web sites and PDF documents into other programs. I thought that was going to be fixed in the Windows 3.1 upgrade.

  • Thinking of buying a new desktop - opinions about this model?
    R RandyWester

I think that 28 amps is the 5 volt supply. Maybe the total including the 12v rails as well. But point taken, those 1K x 1 chips drew a lot of power. If it had existed, 4 gig of RAM would have drawn enough to power a small city. 3.3 KW should be enough to weld heavy plate.

So... the administrator works at Lenovo, setting those defaults. Maybe it was the same person that installed the giant advertisement pushing security hole, maybe just part of the team.

  • What is so bad/wrong/terrible about Windows 8.1?
    R RandyWester

What you've got there is a bad case of unchecked I.T. administrator arrogance. (Heyyyy here's something that'll make my job a teensy bit easier... And screw the people whose work it trashes, they stepped away from their computer, so fsck them.)

    R RandyWester

Is the documentation to be written in English, for English readers? Given the sample provided here, I don't think that it is those skills that are driving the change. They're removing everything from your control, that may have made you indispensable. It doesn't mean they'll definitely toss you out, it means that they very easily can, and probably will. Or they'll forget all about how you held them for ransom, and keep paying a documentation writer well above market salary.

  • Visual Studio Community Edition now?
    R RandyWester

Perhaps the Microsoft definition of 'Enterprise Organization' should read 'Possibly Viable Business'. Once a startup has a few paying customers, Microsoft wants a piece of the action. Probably someone tallied up their net revenue from educational licences and realized that it would be far cheaper to give the software away.
