  • All in UK : Don't use TalkTalk as Broadband
    T Ted Ferenc

They are available in my area, but checking withe friends who have TT I decided not to touch them, if it works then great, if it doesn't then you have had it you can be without a phone not only broadband for weeks. e.g. my BT phone line failed just before Christmas last year, I reported the fault at 09:00 an engineer was around at 15:00 to fix it, allegedly a wire had rusted at the main junction box on the road. That is quality the service I want. OK BT like all companies do have their issues but on the whole they are OK, in my experience.

My favourite use was as an RS232 loop back connector, i.e. jam it between pins 2 and 3. It has saved me hours of time.

  • Get me a count....
    T Ted Ferenc

The sad thing was the Software Manager, I was going to run a new branch the firm opened so they needed a team leader, my comment was make anybody team leader except him, even the cleaning lady would be a better choice. I did state that within 6 months he would have totally screwed up the work I had done in making the department function at least tolerably well. In 6 months I was proved correct, what happened to him? He left, as he was a team leader, he got a better team leaders job elsewhere!

Reminds me of one I saw. To alphabetically sort the ASCII data in a table the moron read the relevant field into a fixed length string array and then he sorted the array. And guess what the management did to him? He was promoted to team leader eventually! I kid you not.

Or apply lateral thinking. I find child #1 has thousands of pictures taken of it. But child # 2 tends to have birthday photos only!, if that. So instead of a new camera possibly baby #2 :)

  • Circuit breaker
    T Ted Ferenc

We have a similar problem, but it only happens rarely, when we have all the rings on the electric cooker on, plus the oven and the grill. So we simply ignore it! As has been mentioned your heater can take a lot of current. It may be that you are overloading the circuit upgrading the circuit breaker won't help. work out the current all you appliances are using, the formula is easy, it is just about the only electrical one I remember Ohms Law[^]. Current = Watts / Volts In the UK there is a limit of 30 amps per circuit, I am fairly certain of this, (ring main). Cookers etc. have a separate circuit.

I use a very cheap multi tool, for Wilkinsons in the UK, bought because it looked reasonable, stainless steel cost 1.50 GBP and had the most important tool,a bottle opener. I only go for day walks so don't need anything exotic, i.e. I will probably loose it before I need to use it!

  • Random reboots
    T Ted Ferenc

I have a PC that has always had a random reboot problem, i.e. a BSOD. I have never found the problem, unlike yours it can run for months with no problem, then I get several a day. It is a dual boot machine NT and XP and it fails in both Operating Systems. It does seem that certain programs trigger it, e.g. Firefox. It has even flumoxed one of my hardware friends! I would suggest you send it back, i.e. a broken PC is not a valid payment.

  • Never shop at Sears!
    T Ted Ferenc

Lat week, in England, I returned of coffee machine to ASDA (Wall Mart), it had broken after 10 months usage, and to a hiking shop a pair of boots 3 months old that had a manufacturing fault, I had a full refund on both. We have a law, 'The Sale of Goods Act', any goods not of merchantable quality must be fixed, replaced or refunded by the seller, the law states you have up to 6 years to claim, but there are certain caveats.

  • Can someone test this on php 4.46 under Linux?
    T Ted Ferenc

The ISP is surfspeedy.com perhaps the level 3 support were bored and fancied a play? But I can't complain. My LINUX skills are rusty so I can't comment about Suhosin but their forums do seem active, and it seems there are 'issues' with it. I get concerned when the last 2 release dates of a product were 2007.03.06 and 2007.03.04 generally I find if a product has so many releases, there is something wrong there. It may just be a group of happy hackers adding new bits or that they have not tested/designed the new features properly and have introduced bugs I hasten to add I am in no way criticising Suhosin, I know absoulutely nothing about it.

From their email:- We aren't willing to completely disable suhosin, but I have disabled the cookie encryption setting It is very refreshing to have an ISP that actually looks into and 'fixes' problems

Thanks, Google just beat you, I am looking at the forums now. Unfortunately I can't really use setcookie on my site, as with all software I could re write my code, but as the ISP is chasing this up. They have just got back to me with a work around, I am impressed. Thanks for your reply, as I am sure you will agree software updates are real fun;)
