  • Three-D Printers
    V vaderjm

I use primarily FDM printers, I've had them for about 8 years and they are certainly fun. I recently finished an F1 RC car that I printed all the parts for. Prusa and Creality make some really decent and reliable printers, though I currently own a Snapmaker Artisan. I use it for all 3 purposes (3d printer, laser engraver, cnc machine) so it works well for me. OriginalGriff had some great things to say about both common types of printers so no need for me to add more about that.

    V vaderjm

I may get flogged depending on how y'all feel about javascript, but I have found react-native (if you want a quick boost to get you going, react-native w/expo) to be very helpful. I started looking into it in August and spent about 4 weeks just tinkering and learning. A simple offline app could be constructed much more quickly and deployed, depending on how well you like javascript. I actually think expo also has a method to submit to apple if you lack a Mac. Best of luck.

Not to mention, Template Meta Programming (a little nugget from back in the day). My father always wanted to write a program to manage sporting tournaments because he felt they were poorly run (I wrestled for 15 years as a child). Said he would do it but didn't know C++ (He was in process engineering). First I'd heard of it as a kid, kind of stuck with me. Definitely my favorite as well.

In 1991 I was 13 and my father brought home our first IBM Compatible, a 286 machine with 4mb of RAM (maybe 8), and showed me how to write batch files to launch programs so I didn't have to do it from scratch every time. I was intrigued, took a pascal class in 1995 in high school, but still stuck to mechanical engineering in college until my second semester when I was introduced to C++ and Calculus II and thermal dynamics. I said "forget it" to the crazy math and found my way to C++ (I was nudged, my C++ professor was Chuck Allison of the C++ Standards Committee back then).

    V vaderjm

You are right about the size, but luckily I have less than a terabyte currently and don't plan on passing 4TB for at least a couple years. As a plus with a decent internet connection (20Mb/s UP is what I have) the upload speed to their server was quite acceptable. Plus the whole network drive thing. I run a couple home servers so all our home computers/devices save data to the servers and I just back them up to idrive, so my kids have a much harder time destroying my data :-D

I use iDrive because their software allows network shares as well as external hard drives and NAS. When I started online backup 2 years ago, they were the only ones I found that did. They have a free plan, but their 2TB plan is only $55/mo for 1 user unlimited computers and $75/mo for 5TB

  • Ergonomic Keyboards anyone?
    V vaderjm

I think I'm ordering one today. This is pure genius. I remember a roommate had one in college 20 years ago and I wasn't sure I could get used to it so I never tried. Really never paid more attention to it till today. But with my hands the way they are, I should have :( Do they make them so I can use my middle and ring finger to move the ball? Clicking seems more natural with my thumb/index finger and rolling with the others. I seem to remember my roommates' being that way.

I also use this keyboard and my wrists have hurt a lot less since starting with it. For what it's worth, I also use a mouse that lets my wrist rest on it's side. Takes a bit getting used to, but helps tremendously with the pain.

It works for me well with neo4j, the graphing database. I was able to use it for multiple instances of neo on the same server. So far no problems.

It is free to use, I recently set it up on one of my servers, and even I (with somewhat limited knowledge of linux) was able to get it running. Took about a day to get it and the services I wanted to use running.

  • Neo4j graph database - any experiences?
    V vaderjm

I have used neo4j in a couple large projects and absolutely love it. I still use mysql for transaction data (i.e. accounting, it's just more practical), and mongodb for centralizing document stores (images, uploads, css/js files), but for what you described neo would work just fine. Keep in mind you can also apply labels to the nodes to allow you to query the data in a more meaningful way. Neo4j isn't the end all/be all, but it's very useful for me, not to mention because of it's nature of related nodes, super quick for the data extraction that I do.
