This world is not the same without this guy: C | C++ | \ \ Java C# Javascript UNIX | \ \ LINUX Windows Mac OS | | Android iOS I know I'm missing others, but think about the sheer % of all codebase and OS's and the % of all devices (computers, servers, phones, etc) in existence today due to Dennis Ritchie's genius. Staggering. And hardly noticed by the mainstream. Sad.

He's right, it does it. He forgot to mention to hold the mouse button down while you do it. So drag this browser window partially off to either side, and keep going until your mouse cursor reaches the edge of the physical desktop. The underlying window will outline back into the desktop along whichever border you headed out on. It actually is pretty neat.

There's a bunch of them over on YouTube but this is the one I was referring to: Stanley Jordan - Stairway To Heaven[^]

Well, you can do it with any guitar really. Weave a rubber band or something (I used one of my daughter's hair ties) through the string right next to the nut to keep strings from ringing when you tap the fretboard but otherwise you can tap away to your hearts content after that. Check out some of the mind-blowing stuff Stanley Jordan does over on YouTube, especially his cover of Stairway To Heaven where he does this on two guitars at the same time. Incredibly is putting it mildly. Yeah, those Chapman Sticks and Warr Guitars are kinda pricey, aren't they? ;P Check out Trey Gunn with King Crimson doing eLeKtRiK, should also be on YouTube, the sound is amazing: http://youtu.be/g54_peiImo8[^] Naturally it starts with modified *Frippertronics. I bow at the Crimson alter...

We do, actually, although no video yet, I should probably start doing that. I have a couple of rehearsals' worth of stuff to cut down and upload. We do a lot of Holdsworth/Dimeola type of stuff, pretty fun. As some other posts on this thread have alluded to (and you yourself), there's definitely a time and a place for gear like the eBow. Same thing for a lot of specialized effects, like harmonizers and ring modulators, both of which I also use. But if you're looking to stretch into some new areas, get some new sounds, this thing is pretty good for that. I don't use it much but love when I do :)

Although very challenging technically, I wonder if you could pick up the touch playing technique, ala Stanley Jordan or Tony Levin on the Chapman Stick? Incredibly hard to master but amazing to listen to, and it's a completely different approach to playing. I would be able to play quite a bit with my right hand on the fretboard this way if I knew how to do it properly.

Just the one, had it for years. My guitar playing partner has one too so we sometimes do some really cool stuff on dual solos.

LOVE the eBow! LOVE LOVE LOVE the eBow!! Seriously, you can do some incredible stuff with it. The best use, and most common, is playing "backwards" solos (think Hendrix - Are You Experienced or The Beatles).

  • Programming is not a long term career
    Z zenstain

I completely disagree. I'm 45, still coding, still current and will remain so until they stick tubes in me on my deathbed. In fact, I'm at yet another crossroads in my career (there are many on the technology road) - stick with .NET, which is my bread and butter, or switch to Android and open source-based development? I'm making the move to mobile development, and right now that means Android development for me. I started out over 20 years ago as a C/UNIX guy, then moved to Windows, then moved to .NET, and will remain open minded and flexible as technology choices and trends dictate (or interest me). So my advice to the young 'uns - keep developing, keep learning, do what you love. There will only be an increasing need for talent going forward, especially as that talent becomes senior-level.

"Society is very divided in the US, the rich poor divide is nothing new, all countries have that, but the phoney Liberal Conservative divide gets tiresome. Particularly when you realise that it's in large part a divide created to bolster particular voting blocks and sell books and tv programming." Perfectly stated. Perfectly. I guess it takes an outsider's perspective to better see this, although I've been touting this exact thought for years.

I have been asking this same question for years. Toss in the number of times that I've been sent on interviews that have almost nothing to do with my skill set or the absurd markups some of them take on the contracts. By and large, the headhunter "industry" is filled with used-car salesmen. I hate 'em.
