The purpose of the fake surrenders is exactly to provoke the Americans into some kind of retaliation. Then get it on TV and out to the Iraqi military and show that surrendering to the US will just get you killed. Suddenly the 10-20% of the soldiers who wouldn't have fought are suddenly holding out to the end. I think the American restraint in this war has so far been astonishing. I hope they get Saddam, his sons, and the leaders of the Baath party soon so that no one else has to die in this. Dave Huff Igor would you give me a hand with the bags? Ok in that case if you would like to know; That link you posted was to a very biased Aljazeera source. It is pure propoganda and does not help anyone, the Iraqis the least. So are you going to blast CNN, Fox, and the other news channels who are showing Iraqi POWs on their broadcasts as well? All the channels, worldwide, want to gain popularity. It's called ratings. Do you want the Whitehouse to bomb Fox as well? Cheers The universe is driven by the complex interaction between three ingredients: matter, energy, and enlightened self-interest.

There have been "front line journalists" from at least as far back as the Korean War. They are an essential part of war for several reasons. Number one, they bring the brutality of war home so that instead of this becoming a "game" of who got the most kills, you can see up close and personal that real human beings are being killed on both sides. Number two, the journalists act as a kind of "checks and balances". I'm sure very few people on this forum can appreciate the unreal pressure and tension the fighters go through during a ground attack. It would certainly not be inconceivable for people put in these situations to "flip out" and do things that they wouldn't ordinarily do. With reportes there, this is much less likely to occur. Number three: Even most of the people in favor of the invasion of Iraq are not "pro war" in the strictest sense of seeing people needlessly harmed. However, the simple (and sad) fact is that war is a part of life. It always has been and tragically always will be. As a part of history there needs to be people there chronicalling it. This is exactly why I didn't watch the Academy Awards for the first time in many years. You'll notice I wasn't alone. The show had it's worst viewership numbers in its history. I could care less what Michael Moore (or any otehr actor) thinks politically. I watch something like the awards not to see political debate - I can go anywhere for that - but to enjoy the seeing the best Hollywood has to offer being recognized for their accomplishments. I read the other day that the person who would run post-Saddam Iraq was a West Point (military academy) officer who is an Arab (and speaks Arabic). [Edit] We are told that Army Lt. Gen. John Abizaid, one of two deputy commanders of U.S. Central Command, will likely be the top U.S. military officer in post-war Iraq. The Arabic-speaking West Point graduate would essentially run the country while the United States maintained order and then slowly handed off power to Iraqi citizens. http://www.gertzfile.com/gertzfile/InsidetheRing.html[^] [/Edit] ------------------------------------------ "What happened in that Rhode Island club is shocking. What your friend says is right. Why do so many people take to doing unacceptable things? I think it is because they have no notion of responsibility; and a feeling that they can get away with anything - something that probably becomes a second nature because of bad parenting.
