The worst of this, David, is that i really didn't know such things existed until you responded in disbelief and i was forced to search Google. Seems it's impossible to imagine a perversion that someone hasn't already tried, and posted photos on the 'Net. shog nine Ever since i heard the voice i thought i had no choice...

In this particular case, you're right. I just wish some innocent Iraqi peasant won't have to suffer because of this f*cknut. :) -- Chatai. Yana ra Yakana ro futisha ta?

You can thank Microsoft Word's spell checker for that. After ten minutes of strugling to read the text in Internet Explorer I just copied it all to Word and zoomed in so I could read (and write) it comfortably. More info (this is the article that the WashingtonPost apparently references): The United States Congress has stepped in to find nearly $300m in humanitarian and reconstruction funds for Afghanistan after the Bush administration failed to request any money in the latest budget. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/2759789.stm[^] ------------------------------------------ They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Benjamin Franklin In an encampment expecting daily attack from a powerful enemy, self-preservation is paramount to all law. - Thomas Jefferson

I can't speak for the current curriculum but when I did 'O' Level History we covered the period from the Russian Revolution though to the late 70s. "Nations don't have friends, nations have interests." That's what I said. Turkey is interested in getting $26 billion. If the US wants their support, they will pay for it, just as they are paying many billions to other "friends" who are supporting the war against Iraq. Poland, Romania, Britain, Qatar, etc., all of them are getting paid. In the old days, countries paid mercenaries to fight for them. Today, countries pay other countries to look the other way.

I am not saying for a moment that the H1B people are not affecting things at all. What I am saying is that the effect is less than what people believe. I really think a lot of the "new" EEC countries are involved almost entirely because of the economic benefits. It often seems like they are clawing at the edges to get in. Yes, I have no idea whether the "new Europe" should be a Federal type or a centralized organization. It does mean for all involved though that a lot of what is considered "normal" will have to change. Personally here in NZ I'm not big on sovereignty issues, eg NZ one-day may become part of Australia or a Pacific group. But many people seem to worry about there sovereignty. I seem to recall an interview with DJ where he said they tried the format on the streets of New York, but it didn't work as people were more inclined to lump him, or call the police, or be generally more interventionist and questioning than the Brits. Mind you, I'm surprised he doesn't get challenged (or clobbered!) more often. Debbie

Jörgen Sigvardsson wrote: It'll be interesting to see who will change first - governments towards the will of the people, or vice versa The answer can (partly) already be answered: Government converges to the people, otherwise there'd be much more support for war under the European population. But I say converge, not change. Because I don't think that either will completely change it's opinion. Jörgen Sigvardsson wrote: If we're going to put pressure on him, we should all do it together. Everything else is just futile I agree. The European discordance must give Saddam the impression that there're even European countries supporting his way. And that won't help us getting him to disarm his country. Jörgen Sigvardsson wrote: If you start feeding them with reports of Saddam mounting nukes in the desert - preferrably with pictures - you'll see the oppinion start to sway. . For sure. But at the moment we don't have any convincing proofs beside some satellite pictures marked with colored circles and squares. If we've had such evidences, there'd never been the base for the current public's protest against war. Jörgen Sigvardsson wrote: At the end of the day, it's the media who controls the oppinions in a country. Unfortunately that's the whole truth. We can see that all over the world - media can establish the public's opinion like no other instrument. And that's worst in case media is controled and abused by government.
