Sayonara, Chumps! -
Sayonara, Chumps!I was just reading the "RIP Mindy McCready" thread. About 90% of the content in that thread is either unintelligible nonsense (e.g. about some Spy magazine) or morally bankrupt garbage... and I cannot even downvote. I'm not sure if "no downvotes" is personal, specific to the forum, or something else... but the lack of a downvote option basically makes this site unusable for me. Constant protests aside, a downvote is exactly what many of those posts deserve. (A downvote is far too mild for several of them. Anyone who abuses the memory of someone who just died should be banned.) This is the last straw for me. I've already removed all of my content from this site. Now, I'm removing my account. I'm not sure how that works, but I guess I'll just e-mail Chris M. if I have to. CP had a lot of good things going for it at one time. It's unfortunate that there's not a site where people writing long, in-depth articles are appreciated (as opposed to people giving sarcastic "party line" answers to kids doing their homework). Of course, I can't forget WPF zealots, and now, it would seem, dog Chauvinists; such people are apparently embraced here. Sayonara, chumps.

Why spend time and money finding new prime numbers?I think "Ludicrous Prime" would be a great name for a rapper.

So I've seen this awesome band yesterday...Are you taking issue with his vocabulary or his taste in music? ;)

_IID_IXMLHTTPRequest linker errorIt looks to me like you set up a Windows application project but then put code into it for a more traditional DOS / Command Prompt / Console / UNIX program (i.e. one with a
main()
function instead of aWinMain()
function). I'd suggest starting a new project (or solution) in Visual Studio, being careful to select "Console Application" (or similar). -
Erm.... Opera to use WebKit browser engine?That would put me at -1.

Is it only me, or ...I've heard people using Ruby on Rails are remarkably productive.

We should only work 25 hours a week, argues professorMy wife disaproves of suburbs (and I disapprove of 90-minute commutes). But I have seen some otherwise reasonable people fall into that trap...

Anyone else excited?My enthusiasm is dampened somewhat by rumors that Robin Williams will be involved.

Familiarity breeds contempt; when the respect wears off...I've experienced it. I call it the "Gregg Williams Phenomenon." Gregg was a (gridiron) football coach who fixed the New Orleans Saints defense and helped them with the 2009 championship. Two years later, the Saints decided they'd had enough of Gregg's unique, bombastic persona. The decision to fire him was made with almost no opposition, internally or among the fans. The Saints hired another respected defensive coach and promptly became the first team in history to give up 7,000 yards in a season (an astronomical number). The point is that it's surprisingly easy to take someone's contribution for granted. It doesn't even take that much time for people to forget history, and this is true even among people who ought to know better. It's just a natural aspect of the human mind. I've been able to fight through this issue at least once. It requires communication. You don't have to say things like "remember all of the great improvements I've made." Just find a reason to work such commentary into ordinary business discussions. It helps to frame things in narrative terms, e.g. "before we talk about these latest ideas for the fizzbuzz module, let's review its history." Then, make statements like "WE added this" or "WE decided to devote some time to speeding up that" or "here's a mistake WE don't want to make all over again." It's just a good way to get relevant information out there.

DirectX/XNA Phase Out ContinuesThat doesn't match my recollection. There is such a thing as DirectX software rendering. It's perhaps not as seamless as OpenGL software fallback (since it's treated as its own "device" with a specific set of capabilities), but it exists.

We should only work 25 hours a week, argues professorIt's hard for me to reconcile that claim with the uncertainty most people experience with regard to things like retirement and healthcare. I don't feel much of an urge to spend an additional 15+ hours per week just goofing off until such questions are addressed for me and my family.

The Framework Superclass Anti-PatternBetter yet, just don't make a framework. If you really want to "help" me write code, give me helpers... not mandates.

Why do they insist on repeating the name of the table in the column name?I use the verbose name for foreign keys in other tables. Every table's own key ought to be simply
id
. Excess verbosity in naming is one of my pet peeves. .NET programmers in particular seem incapable of making up variable names that don't require me to hit the "Shift" key at least 3+ times. -
Work Weirdo'sIt's a good thing my own doctorates are in Astrophysics and Philology, not Medicine. Otherwise, I couldn't share this story.

Gave an interview for MS specialistMost of my technical interviewers have left little doubt about the matter. I always wonder who those people actually end up hiring.
-
Work Weirdo'sJust to be fair, the man I'm talking about was a decent person and a good developer... he was one-of-a-kind, though.

Gave an interview for MS specialistGetting hired is all about figuring out what the interviewer's pet product / pet algorithm / pet data structure happens to be that day. If the man across the table just read about super-duper reversible spanning Croatian B-Trees, you'd better come up with that as your answer, or you're out of luck.
