  • Fun Airline Safty Video - Wearing only body paint
    A Aaron VanWieren

Seems like air travel is a big topic today, did anyone else see this video[^] from Air New Zealand (via bad astronomy web site). There is a you tube channel with bloopers and another commercial. Very entertaining, notice the attendants are wearing only body paint.

Did anybody else see the two occasions that CNN pulled out their new hologram technology. Not sure if it was a gimmick, but it was deffinately really cool! I have a clip of it here[^].

Yeah, that is sorta what I have been interested in as I have looked them over. I have also been interested how the entire website is put together and tells the story. Some of Google's maps,New York Times and CNN's maps have non poll data that is really well thought out. Aaron

I have blogged about several of them now, mostly interested in their overall ability to use the internet medium and online mapping capabilities. There was one I found that had a novel approach which was to weigh the polls based on very selective criteria, that was fivethirtyeight.com. Their statistical system is extremely complex and seems to leave some room for thought. Aaron

    A Aaron VanWieren

Their products are pretty good. The problem is that they are one of the only enterprise level players in the market, so they have enjoyed a near monopolistic environment. Unfortunately they believe developers only work on the front end and less in the back end of an application. I cant really say too much bad about them as they have provided a product that works fairly well and have developed an industry. I have just worked with them so long that price and licensing complexity have been major complaints. Aaron

Sorry, I will have to look. I run in those circles so I here it all the time from others in the industry. Sorry for being a little loose there. Trust me, ESRI is the worse when it comes to overbloated licensing models at ridiculous prices. Yeah, guess google searching is not as easy on this subject as it used to be. Aaron

I am just curious if anybody actually uses or looks at these maps. I have not linked any here as there are thousands, but I am talking about any of the density poll prediction maps like you see on CNN, red/blue who has what state type things. As I said, I am just curious how useful are these things and how much do people look at them. I am fairly oblivious as I work in developing GIS systems and have a background in Geography and GIS so out of interest I look at maps as often as possible. Aaron

Compared to ESRI, the primary GIS Software company, that is nothing. If you want to see a flood of unhappy people google "ESRI" and "licensing"! I warned you!

  • Electoral Maps For Statistics Lovers [modified]
    A Aaron VanWieren

Hey all, Been a while since I posted, but lately I have been doing a series of blog posts on electoral maps of differing kinds and I came across one that I thought was amazing in its scope and breadth. The site fivethirtyeight.com[^] does not just display polling data, but applies statistical analysis and weighs the polling data. I have more depth here[^] if you are interested, as well as other maps that I have posted reviews on in this series. Hope yall enjoy! Aaron And no this is not a plug for my site, yet you may visit if you want, I just thought yall might enjoy this fine piece of statistical work! _____________________________________________________________________ Our developers never release code. • I started programming at age 13
    A Aaron VanWieren

Don't know how old I was, but I started with the simple move the cursor in school program (think this was logo?). What I really remember as my first experiences with programming involved my Commadore 64. Not sure what language that was, but I used to get my monthly copy of Compute magazine. I would read the code article and imagine what it was doing. I would then spend the next couple of days typing in the program, just to get a smiley face with a wink or a number calculator. It was great fun and a real pain if you missed typing characters! Fun!

  • Chrome Bug - Multiprocess (Thread) Question
    A Aaron VanWieren

From what I understand, each tab that is opened is supposed to be its own process. Looking at the memory manager, each tab has its own memory. Interestingly, if you use something like reader and click a heading it opens a new tab. The kicker is that this tab is a child of the parent tab in the memory profile and is not separate. So there should be two process but there is only one. On the other hand if you right click and choose open tab then it opens a tab in a separate thread. Is this a bug or intended?

  • Chrome: tabs
    A Aaron VanWieren

Unless you click a link, I noticed that when I click a link it is in the same sandbox as the one that originated it, unless I right click and select open in new tab. Dont know if this is deliberate or a bug. Aaron

  • Google Chrome
    A Aaron VanWieren

I like the memory manager. The interesting thing is that if you look at the mem manager and you are in something like google reader and you click a link within it, it opens a new tab. Looking at the usage that tab still belongs to the previous tabs memory space. If this is an issue, right click the link and select open tab. Dont know if this is supposed to happen or if this is a bug. Also, in the memory manager is a cool little link on the bottom left that says something like "Stats for nerds". Click this and it takes you to a tab that lists the memory usage of browsers you currently have open. Pretty interesting overall. My 2cents worth.

  • store files in a database
    A Aaron VanWieren

Are you using Oracle or SQLServer database? The concepts are the same for both, but the terminology is a little different. If you are talking about Microsoft SQL Server then you will be looking at storing and retrieving a BLOB (Binary Large Objects). If you look up Microsoft SQL Server and BLOB you should be able to find all the resources you need to get started. Try this to start with: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309158[^] Hope this helps Aaron

Ah, but if they got the standard floppy drive, they would learn the joys of constantly opening up the drive and putting the belt back on the spinner! Or better yet, they would continuously try to use a tape drive and go mad from the experience! ;P I wonder how many people on here came from this similar back ground? Aaron
