I also do, and I do feel the onset of Alzhemier. At my last job, my co-worker shortened var names to the point where LN could be "Loan Number" at times, and at other times it ment "Last Name". It drove me nuts :( He would say, "I guess you just like to type."

  • Worst source code EVER
    B Battlehammer

After reading some of the responses, I guess I am lucky. However, one of the worse was at my last job I had to constantly fix bugs in my college's code. He almost always used two letters for variable names. All data tables were "dt" for example. Probably the worst was that he always used "ln" for "Last Name" and also used it for "Loan Number". (Banking applications) What a mess, you never knew what you were looking at. When stepping through the code I would be in one module looking at the Last Name and the next thing I knew, I was in another module looking at the Loan Number thinking "what happen"?

The position I am in now. I started here six months ago and the co-workers are awesome. I've worked with some pretty bad co-workers and it can make all the difference in the world. The company is doing well also which also makes a big difference, especially in this economy. (If the execs are happy, they usually make life better for us pee-ons)

Depends on the company you end up at. I was ready to throw it all away and then I got this job and I love it. Good people can make all the difference.

I have to agree. Visual Studio 2010 at my new job which I started a month ago and Visual Studio 2008 before that. I can't imagine not having intellisense. All my new code is strictly in Visual Studio. The previous code which I am editing was written in Classic ASP. I still use Visual Studio to edit the Classic ASP, but I haven't figured out how to debug (step through) it.

I hope someone above him sees what he is doing and stop him before too much damage is done. I don't blame you for now wanting to look for new work at this time. Times are tough, jobs are scarce and six months won't look all that great on the resume. I hope all works out for you.

I'm with you 1,000%. I buy the CD whenever possible but it's nothing like the vinyl was. I do however; rip them to my IPod for listening to at work and the gym. Now it's on to digital books. The same thing holds true here. There’s nothing like the smell of opening a new book when you crack the spine for the first time. With the closing of book stores on the rise, I am finding myself comparing the Kendal to the Nook. Somehow, searching books online is not the same as wondering through the book store with a coffee for hours on end. Technology can be great, but it can also be depressing. As you said, "I guess I'm getting old." X|

I was using the free version of AVG for years and never had a problem. I did find out recently that my cable company provides three free licenses for McAfee full version, so I installed it on my two home PCs and I love it. (If it's free, it's for me :) )

  • Do you enjoy your job?
    B Battlehammer

I used to, but over the last few years they cut the IT team down to just me. As of last week they let my boss go and I don't even know who I answer to anymore. I have plenty of programming work which I love, so I am busy. It just seems like I'm stranded out here on an Island with no one to talk to except for you guys on CP. The users on the floor have no idea how technology works or even why we need it, so I feel kind of unappreciated with all of the other IT techies gone. However, I do look forward to the paycheck every other week and that keeps me going! :sigh:

I don't get to speak with the users but I spent over three weeks going over colors with my manager on my current project. "More blue." "Less blue." "No a little lighter." "No a little darker." etc, etc, etc. :sigh:
