Great, thanks. I'm using Google Docs, so I would simply add you to the review version of the document. Do you have a gmail account? Daniel

Nope not yet. I would like to enhance it a bit before I release it, add bits that are missing, explain better parts which should be explained better, remove unnecessary stuff etc. Daniel

Yes, a colleague of mine suggested I'd sell it on Amazon for a small fee. I'm not sure it would matter that much financially, I don't expect to get rich from it :-) I don't know how good it is, it probably depends on what people expect. It is written for beginners though, as a school textbook. Daniel

Hi all, I'm currently working on a book on Web Programming for a course I'm teaching, and the first draft is already done. I actually used the first draft this spring in the course. However, the book needs reviewers. So the question is: is anyone in here interested? If you are interested, feel free to contact me. The book covers basic topics such as HTML, CSS, HTTP, JavaScript, jQuery, JSON and Ajax, and on the server side I'm covering the basics of C#/.NET, ASP.NET MVC and LINQ. It is currently about 160-170 pages. I'm not really sure if I will "publish" it the traditional way, i.e. printed on paper, but it will definitely be available electronically. I'm not even sure I will sell it, it is based on material freely available on the web, and I simply gave my students a copy. Am I mad for considering not selling it? Regards, Daniel

Well, both. I assume most of you would first look in those two places (google cache and archive.org), are there any other places I should check? Also, is it possible that someone in here knows the author personally?

Hi all, some time ago I found an interesting article about associative containers in STL: http://virtualrealityblog.com/articles/using-the-c-stl-part-2-associative-containers/[^]. I bookmarked it, but the domain expired recently and hence the article is not accessible anymore. I tried both the google cache, as well as archive.org, but to no avail. So, have you any idea how I could access this article? Do you happen to know the person which wrote this article? Or would you happen to know where I could find a similar article? (If only there was a website somewhere with great programming articles...) Regards, Daniel

  • My first rant in a long time...
    D dabs

A few years back I was writing a phone application which used TAPI. The part that used TAPI was in a separate layer. Then I had a requirement to be able to communicate with an Alcatel PBX. The code had been tested against a Cisco, and worked there, but didn't work with Alcatel. After several days of debugging, and asking questions, an answer came from Alcatel: they didn't support everything that was needed. So I had to switch to using SIP. Luckily, because of the layering, I only had to rewrite that part, and didn't have to modify the core of the application. I do agree with the author however that all this layering is sometimes just in your way. To me this is all about finding the correct balance. Daniel

I don't think the exact version of ASP.NET MVC matters terribly much, I would prefer if there would be minimal hassle with installation and such. Assuming they all have VS2010, I'll probably go with the version of MVC that ships with it. It is probably a good idea to start with a site that can be built without too much worries about authentication/authorization, since that would only complicate matters at the beginning. So I would prefer if the site has some sort of a public content that anyone can view, their first tasks would then be to just work on the HTML/CSS for a couple of web pages, then move to server-side code which generates content, then to server-side code that processes HTTP PUT requests etc. Somewhere along the way I would introduce authorization/authentication. I do feel it is important that the focus of each week should be narrow, i.e. it is probably not a good idea to let the do too much at any given time. In my case, I will be teaching students that have already finished one semester of CS studies, but don't necessarily have any experience in building applications (web or client) at all. I'm even thinking it could be a good idea to introduce database connections rather late in the process, and they could start with working with pure text files. Yes, I'm aware it is not practical in the sense that nobody does this, however I do think it would be an excellent programming exercise. It would also make them appreciate all the work done for them by the database once they start using it. Regards, Daniel

This is actually something I've had to do myself for few years now, and will have to re-do next semester. I will be teaching a course that has previously mentioned web development "on the side", but that will be the main focus this time. The current plan is similar to yours: show them how to build a web site from scratch, starting with teaching them the basics of HTML, then CSS, then move to the server, teach them the basics of a programming language they will use (probably C#, could be Java or Python), teach them about design patterns, MVC etc., HTTP obviously, connecting to databases and/or files, then maybe back to the client to learn about Javascript/jQuery, then back to the server to learn about web services, and finally talk a little bit about HTML5. I still haven't decided what type of web application I will build during the course. It could be a web site where users would store their mp3 collection, and allow them to share their songs with their friends. Or possibly I could build an IDE online (perhaps that would be better suited for more advanced students). I.e. take something they are perhaps currently doing locally, and build a web application doing the same thing. Something Facebook-like would also be fun. I would also welcome any ideas! Regards, Daniel

  • Book recommendation
    D dabs

Hi all, wasn't there a special forum for book recommendations? Anyway, what book(s) would you recommend when teaching beginners System Analysis and Design? I.e. the book should ideally both cover the analysis and design of the internals of an application (UML diagrams etc.), and also about UI design. Do you remember any books that fit the description? Also, if you remember any good articles online, that would also help a lot. Regards, Daníel
