I'd bet the problem is not in the string assignment but in the call to tostring(). Strings are objects with reference semantics. They are assigned by copying an address (think "pointer"). This is not going to be expensive. (Well, for a property it calls the setter method which simply does the simple assignment, and a good compiler will optimize this to eliminate the call overhead. You are doing timing in Release mode, not Debug, right?) This can be verified by removing the assignment but keeping row(5).tostring() and ignoring the returned string. The real questions are: What type of object does row(5) return? How expensive is it's tostring() implementation?

Thank you very much for the replies. Ok. I never thought that RAM needs so much electricity to work. Somebody asked, why so much memory? Simple. ;) To store data. My users run through the jungle and in remote areas around and collect data. Lot's of data. If they do not get eaten by a tiger or run into a landmine they return and sync with the backend. A typical user has more than 20 Megabyte of data, even I compress it already on the device. Flash Ram is no options. It costs money, we do not have. We buy the cheapest avaiable Pocket PC's avaiable. Sure we should have used laptops. But it is so difficult running around in the woods collecting data, avoiding getting eaten by a tiger, not get killed by a landmine and collecting data. I mean you need one hand for your AK-47 so it is difficult to operate a laptop as well. Chris :laugh:

Including an operating system. In case I got bored I programmed. ;) We had to send a boat every view days to a neighbouring island to charge my car batteries, which fed my computer and the shortwave. The neighboring island did not have electricity either. But the shop in the village had a generator. ;)

I think you are probably right that CSV format would not be able to handle BLOB data. I didn't know the nature of your data when I recommended CSV. My suggestion was meant to alert you to the possibility that if you can not take the direct route sometimes there are other things you can try. Before you ship your data off to Europe it may be worth taking a look at the other formats available from the old DB engine. Then again, by shipping the data off to a contractor you will not have to deal with the problems that come up whenever you try to do things that are not meant to be done. ============================================ In my heart of hearts I know what you are saying about Bia Lao is true but I can't be saying that around here.
