This may be the most expedient answer of all! I have been in this situation with many others. With my wife, if I get impatient or try to take over the keyboard, I get rage (from her) -- I sit patiently now... :sigh: With a past co-worker who did not seem to be able to translate what I was asking him to do into coding actions on the keyboard, I tried to intervene at the keyboard and ended up getting the keyboard thrown at me! :omg: I sit patiently now... With all others, I sit patiently now... But I do have to try the restroom idea next time.

What to do while sitting next to someone who can't handle the computer? -
Why does my dog like to roll in Alpaca poo?TheArtistFormallyKnownAsMaxxx wrote:
surely if it stinks to me, it must be REALLY stinky for him
I'm sure it is! The difference is that it is good stinky for him and bad stinky for us!! BTW, our dog is same as yours except its not Alpaca poo but usually something like goat or cat poo. He even loves to eat goose poo. Yuk!

OMG, Unexpected Christmas presentCongratulations, Ennis! That is a very nice gift indeed. The kit lens is not the best but whether or not it is suitable for you depends on your current experience level as a photographer. If it's relatively low, I'd stay with the kit lens until I'd mastered the use of the DSLR under different lighting conditions and with different subjects. If your experience level is high you probably don't need me telling you what is best. ;) What kind of photography do you think you are going to want to do? (people, landscape, wildlife/birds, macro, etc).

Threading horrorThat was a funny comment for sure, but... unless he had raised his thread's priority above most other threads in the system, the o/s would preemptively schedule other threads to run, so both processors would still be doing some useful work.

Avoid return statement in the middle - horror or not? It's not. Your code was how I would have done it...

dvd labelsI haved used Surething CD/DVD Labeler[^] for years. It's not perfect but then, what software is. But it is good enough I've never wanted to look into any other programs that do the same thing. There is a 15 day free trial and after that it is something like $25 to buy (they have several versions, different prices).

To me this is a coding horror, and to you? [modified]Hey, you two are really keeping this thread going! Wow. Meanwhile, as an aside, modern C and C++ compilers still provide the capability for inline assembler code (the MS compiler defines __asm as the keyword for doing this, other compilers may use asm, _asm, etc). The ability can come in handy for performance critical areas if you don't care about portability across processors. I'll also note that the quality of code put out by modern compilers is making the usage of inline assembler not the necessity it used to be (depending on the application, of course).

Horrible enough for you?dojohansen wrote:
I want to point out I was not a part of this team at that time though...
;) That was also my excuse for the code I'd been involved in for the last two years. It's still embarrassing when someone looks at the code for the first time, or notices the bugs in the code in runtime situations, and gives those not so nice glances in the direction of the current developers. It seems like the sins of those who originally wrote the stuff end up becoming the sins of those currently working in it - guilt by association.

Horrible enough for you?Nice, very nice... :sigh: My apologies if this is the code that you are currently trying to deal with (and it does sound like that is the case). As for me, I'm feeling kind of happy right now because I am in the midst of starting up a new project that will be all new development so I won't have to be dealing with this kind of nonsense. If I'm lucky, development will be controlled enough that none of this will crop in to the code base either (I'm probably not that lucky).

Something different (for the photographers among us)...Oops! Thanks for letting me know about this already coming up - I was not aware of that. But, even reposts can be useful for those that missed it on the first go round... You are quite right about the dependency on specific monitor and/or individual. The monitor issue is a reason why photographers almost always use monitors that they keep calibrated using various available products. Otherwise, the images they post might look right on the OP's monitor but different to every other viewer of the images.

Something different (for the photographers among us)...When I'm not s/w engineering I'm usually futzing around with my photography hobby. Recently, on a photography forum I frequent, I saw a link to a cool online test of a person's ability to discriminate among different color tones --> right here[^] I scored 20 on the test which is actually not great compared to some of the other photographers on that forum (who scored 0 - the best result). In my defense, I am a bit older than them and I took the test on an uncalibrated work monitor. If you decide to take the test, have fun. Maybe there's a photographer in some of you out there that didn't realize you had it in you!

Code reviewsThat's a good question! :~ I guess that in the company I am at that the move from s/w mgr to project mgr is considered more of a horizontal move. The important point is that it removed a person without the people skills from a position requiring lots of that to a position requiring much less of that.

Movie DVD LabelsI'm sure it's just for "backup" copies... ;)

Code reviewsI'll second that opinion. It was getting darned close to that decision for me too where I currently work, all because of a software manager that was the root cause for all of the strife and tension within the group. The day was saved when upper management recognized the situation and in a politically sensitive move, shifted the s/w manager to a project manager position and elevated a project lead with good people skills into the s/w manager's role. It's been great ever since...

Nerdy way to lose weight [modified]I downloaded the trial and installed it. Then I watched the Quick Start video at DietPower's website. The program seems quite complete and easy to use. This is just what I need to kickstart myself (yet again) to drop the extra pounds I've put on in the last 2 years. Thanks!

Really ConfusingIt's obviously a political play, IMO, but a good one for McCain. They're both Senators, paid to represent their constituents and propose and vote on legislation, and you'd think that on a bill of this much impact their vote should be on record as yea or nay. McCain should now be there for the vote, and unless Obama changes his mind, won't be. I think that that in itself plays well with the American people in McCain's favor.
