  • Code Reviews
    I iskSYS

I beg to differ, the unit tests, the integration tests, and system tests (automated and manual) are responsible to check whether or not the production systems are broken. Visually inspecting the code for bugs i would argue is not the best solution for that. In addition, some companies use static inspection tools such as code sonar. That said, of course inspecting the code doesn't hurt, but I think the main reason is to check whether code meets the code standards, architectural standards, design patterns etc. In some companies, the informal standards are usually solved with a standardized formatter rules. To reach this point however, developers need to define these rules, and thus my original argument, use code Review to create a set of rules for the formatter.

  • Code Reviews
    I iskSYS

I think the point of the code review is to encourage developers to talk and agree on standards in their work environment. Don't discuss it with us, discuss it with the other developer, add more reviewers. Think of the consequences of your decision for future problems and future if statements

Good news: our survey got some views from "normal" people (see here[^]. Bad news: this is what they concluded from the survey: Developers Are Distracted Developers working from home in the COVID-19 crisis are facing more distractions than ever— from the pantry to family. Keep this in mind when offering advertising and content to developers. Their already fragmented attention is juggling new and different distractions.

    Quote:

When you say loot box scandal, do you mean the modern age where parents refuse to take responsibility for their children stealing from them and instead try to blame the games developers?

No he meant when games assure the parents that they have been rated for kids, but take advantage of said kids and: 1. make them addicted to the horrible system that is loot boxes 2. make them get used to the idea of loot boxes in their future games 3. and make them susceptible to more gambling when they grow up It's not only that pay-to-win is disgusting, it's that developers are allowed to hide it by making their representative say nonsense like: restricting pay-to-win will reduce our ability to innovate. Or when they say that it doesn't affect people who do not buy the loot boxes. Source: ESA president defends loot boxes, warns against government regulation | PC Gamer[^]

Real-time server updates! yes you heard it right! As soon as you change ANYthing on your screen, the changes will be reflected in real-time on your server. There is no need for any Buttons to apply and save and whatnot. Other buzzwords can be "immediate updates" but personally "real-time updates" sounds better.

  • Why is everyone trying to destroy the Internet?
    I iskSYS

"They want things but they don't want to pay for them, they think everything should be free, but not the work they do, that should be paid for" - This is how the internet started, people volunteering to share stuff for free... - Companies saw the potential in this, and we had a .com boom - As history tends to repeat itself, companies saw that we were okay with the model of constant advertisement: for example in cable TV; we pay for the content that we want and were okay with it being interrupted by Advertisements... So most companies have carried this model to the internet (see the newspaper 15 Euro example). - Ah but with the internet we are interactive; we were ignoring the ads! Unlike the cable TV where we were under the mercy of the networks. Solution? Intrusive ad campaigns! "Personalized" ads! Use well-known browser bugs to advertise! More! More! Collect user data! Sell user data! No mercy! Use ads for politics! Use ads to control bowel movement! There is no good, no evil, there is only Powa! In conclusion: Please don't be tempted by the dark side.

  • DELETE SysAdmin FROM Company

Okay so reading this made me cringe and here is why: the world will not improve if you do not do your part in improving it. Of course you could have done everything on your own, no body is doubting that you are good with computers. But time is not on your side; there are deadlines, there are priorities, there are projects to be delivered, bills to be paid, etc. Besides, evolution taught us that humans excelled the most when they worked together, when ideas clashed, etc, it's not always good to do everything on you own. You work in a company where you chose to be a developer presumably because this is what you like/enjoy the most, and this is what brings the best of you. So focusing on this role should be your highest priority. I'm just stating these in order to establish a context. Now having these in mind, here is how the scenario could have been handled: 0 Encounter with a sysadmin, understood that he is way beyond his capabilities 1 ask for his supervisor/senior/manager etc, solve the problem in one hour maybe two. 2 transfer your knowledge to this new sysadmin 2a this would have helped him a lot in his career 2b this would have given him the interest to dig deeper and enjoy his job 2c this would have saved a lot of time the next time you come to him 2d this would have saved a lot of time for the next developer that comes to him 2e this would have given you a privilege over all other developers because you became a special person for this sysadmin 2f this would have made him like developers and helping them because he would have felt that there is always a lesson to learn ... and so many more benefits. Instead, by being frustrated at him, it made him feel bad about his job, made him feel that he will never grow in this position because developers can always do his job in a fraction of the time and he is just there because of some company policy, made him hate developers, etc... and this would for sure help creating a toxic work environment

IMHO: - It's expensive, not all companies can afford Microsoft (small companies would rather go for open source platforms) - It's dependent on Microsoft support team for any deep internal bugs (can result in bad planning at the very least, doesn't always work for big companies with super strict deadlines) - It's somehow limited, meaning that you cannot always do the thing you want to do because it's been decided for you (our domain is about learning, adapting, innovating, and frameworks that do not allow this are generally frown upon) - Mobile is out

There was a video by Veritasium, on how Spanish needs more or less double the words in order to convey the same amount of information, compared to English. Relate the video to the fact that the 'get length' appeared to have been written twice, you get a joke. Well it's funny now that I had to explain everything but nonetheless, nice effort kmoorevs.

I have two different opinions on that matter and I would very much appreciate a constructive discussion :) 1- One of the reasons people act differently on the internet is that they know that their actions will not be (severely) punished socially. In contrast to real life, whether it's a punch in the face, some prison time, or simply a disgusting look from onlookers, their actions are somewhat always followed by consequences. I feel that we must apply this on the internet as well; some sort of 'punishment' is needed. Recently for example, Blizzard implemented the 'Silent Sentence' a punishment that makes the offender not able to comment/post replies/etc, for a certain duration that doubles with each of his offenses. The only problem I see with that system, is that they relied on people to implement it (people are the one reporting the offender), and thus messing up the whole system. I'd say that we need to combine more moderators (replaced by AI in the future) with a punishment system; mimicking the real life cops system (minus the corruption). 2- Some of the younger crowd are still discovering their personalities, their traits, and are always looking for new forms of humor to make it their own. This is because there is a satisfaction in making people laugh, in making oneself more interesting [reference needed]. Sarcasm and black humor for example are a form of humor whether everyone likes or not. See how Roel bob for example, uses his very black humor to draw coders strips. Not everyone likes it but some people do. So how about implementing a system to give people recognition for their action? If someone replied sarcastically it does not mean that he is toxic, it means that he tends to like sarcasm as a humor. So recognize him by giving him sarcastic points; give others argumentation points; there could even be some advice points, etc. These points would stick to the user account so that onlookers can know whether it's worth following/reading this user or not. For example I personally tend to like more CommitStrip over Roelbob, so I would be more interested in reading what commitStrip would post. But both sites would benefit from this system as they would attract their target audience.
