  • A basic model for how a CPU works
    K Keith Barrow

Doesn't exactly anwser your question, but Ben Eater has a series of videos where he builds an 8-bit computer on breaboard starting with a chip [Ben Eater Build an 8-bit computer from scratch](https://eater.net/8bit) Gives a lot of insight into the workings, there are a couple of specific videos below, but the whole thing is fascinating. The first thing is the CPU is powered - the microchip has a ground and dc positive pin. If you think about it interms of electronics, what is a "0" or "1": 0 is easy, it's ground voltage, but 1 needs to be voltage close to a reference - which the +ve provides. This dc reference voltage also provides the power to keep the values in the register. There isn't any flushing - the Clock (which is just a square wave) just gets the CPU to cycle. [“Hello, world” from scratch on a 6502 — Part 1 - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnzuMJLZRdU) This video tells you how CPUs actually execute machine code [How do CPUs read machine code? — 6502 part 2 - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yl8vPW5hydQ) Hope this helps - the videos are right on the edge of electronics / programming. Bill Woodruff's suggestion about the von Neumann architecture and Turing machines is excellent, it explains how we got to 8 bit chips

3! - 1 I think you'll find :) It's curious - nearly everyone I know was taught BODMAS - its the same as PEDMAS, but B=Brackets, O="of". PEDMAS is probably better. Also the great Indian chief "SOH-CAH-TOA". I wonder if they still teach the latter in schools.

I heavily second this suggestion - the built in DateTime has a bunch of deficiencies this blog post by Jon Skeet: [Noda Time: What's wrong with DateTime anyway?](https://blog.nodatime.org/2011/08/what-wrong-with-datetime-anyway.html) is, as ever excellent. Even with NodaTime I work in Instants (analogous to UTC) as much as possible, converting from local dates on the way in and to local dates on the way out.

  • Somebody please explain the importance/use of Abundant Numbers

I understand how to work out the various (numerous) derivatives but what worldly purpose do they serve??

In all honesty I think the main "worldly purpose" was for Michael Gove (who re-jigged the curriculum some time ago) to claim to Conservative Party members that he'd introduced a more traditional/stricter curriculum. Home schooling under lockdown has starkly revealed how bad the curriculum has become, much more wrote learning than in my day, but without the added depth previous generations seem to have been exposed to (if the past exam papers I looked at in my teens were anything to go by). My 6 year old's English work spent weeks categorising words into weirdly fine (and largely useless) groups - by all means make sure there are words to change how often a verb happens (or even adverbs generally) but what use is being able to split them down into adverb types at that age? Answer - it looks like proper education to a certain group of people.

  • Who here knows what a pull parser or pull parsing is?
    K Keith Barrow

I'm pretty much with Randor on you should use it, people should have the wherewithal to look it up, or if it's an article aimed a beginners a brief description (+ more in depth links) of the terms might be appropriate. It's a technical article, so technical language is fine, and you'll help spread the terms. To answer your direct question - no I haven't heard Push/Pull parser but mostly worked it out from the context.
