I use 16-bit compilers when compiling for DOS-based handheld computers that were designed over 10 years ago. Thankfully, though, they're beginning to be phased out - in fact, the EU RoHS[^] directive has basically killed them off, by requiring redesigns to accommodate less hazardous substances, which have been uneconomic. (This is great because we get a good deal of porting/reimplementation software business, although not funny when a wild-write bug that largely went unnoticed on DOS suddenly starts crashing on Windows CE.) All versions of desktop Windows run native 32-bit code, even on x64 and Itanium processors (albeit the latter in emulation). NASM can generate native x86 code. Windows CE also only runs on 32-bit processors though these are generally different architectures (most commonly ARM, which is required for Windows Mobile, but also MIPS and x86 are supported). If your professor doesn't know that Windows is 32-bit code, where the heck's he been for the last 12 years? I very rarely use assembler for anything but it can be useful when trying to work out what went wrong when all you have is a crash address, or in trying to debug a release build (where the compiler is free to reorganize code belonging to different source lines so long as all side effects occur in the correct order, at least in C++). I can vaguely understand that they might want to teach about segmented architectures, but frankly that's a dead and buried design - x64 is a flat architecture (the segment registers exist but mostly don't work in 64-bit mode) and I can't see segments being reintroduced when we hit the limits of the 64-bit address space (if we ever do). My university taught 68000 assembler on the Classic Mac (for computer science students) and on a development board running pSOS (for electronic engineering students). That's a flat 32-bit architecture with far fewer complications than x86, for example no segment registers and registers able to be used freely rather than instructions having limitations on which registers can be used, and I believe is still used in embedded applications. Ah, gotcha. I don't know you'd do that in a console program without resorting to assembly programming. I did something similar decades ago on a VMS system - my function waited for user input for upto "n" seconds. Interesting tid bit... Engineer's have long since complained about Software Engineer's having the title Engineer. Other Engineer's have to be certified and therefor can be held legally liable if something were to happen to a bridge or building they engineered. I am not at all worried that it is not out. First versions of stuff like this usually have bugs and cost more than what they are replacing with little or no gain at the time they are released. As such I plan on waiting about 6 months after it is out to consider purchasing anything PCI-E for my department. John

If you have the original CD for installation, or have an image on the hard drive somewhere (most PC OEMs install from the HDD now, it seems) you might try running SFC - System File Checker. It will analyze the critical files used by Windows and prompt you to insert the CD to replace damaged files with fresh copies. I'm not sure if it is reliable after you have made a number of changes via patches and service packs, but it's worth a try. If one was to become a christian, which is the best denomination to join? Okay, your questions isn't quite as open ended but it is close. Personally I prefer freeBSD (which isn't linux at all, but it will be hard to tell a difference other than names), but there are many other choices. I like the port system which lets me do everything myself if I want, but knows what needs to be done if I don't. Their goal is to be a good server, so it is a good choice, but it does not do everything for you. Suse or Mandrake seem to be the easiest. I use Suse on one machine and I don't like it, because in their effort to keep things stable they do not update to bleeding edge versions of everything as soon as it comes out. In addition the automatic tools can be a pain if you want to maintain things manually. This is a consideration that obviously may not apply, and indeed might be insightful enough to push to you Suse. Slasckware is old, and popular. It is the easiest do it yourself system. Many admins like it because you know exactly what is in it - what you installed and configured yourself. A good systems for experts who have better things to do with their time. Debian is popular, but I can't say much about it, other than it has a reputation for being behind on everything, and being really strict about legal matters. Gentoo is for people who want to compile everything. Very bleeding edge, but you have to configure and compile everything yourself. A good system if you are serious about learning, and popular so it must be good for something else, but as I don't use it I don't know. If Gentoo isn't enough of a do everything yourself, there is also linux from scratch. IF you are expecting attacks, or running a firewall, OpenBSD is the only thing I would trust. They will sacrifice everything for security, so it is an experts only system. NetBSD runs on nearly everything, so if you want to run one OS that is your best choice. (if you don't run things like a Vax or Sun3s next to your PCs don't worry about it) Redhat/Fedora also exists, but I know nothing about it. It is popular though. There are many other choices. I know I left some out. I think I covered all the major ones. Now you need to try all the churches and find out which one God ... err.. You need to try them all I figure out which one you like.
