  • Two hours and fiftynine minutes to go....
    R Robert Surtees

I'm running an army of old discarded Pentiums, a couple of Atoms, an i7, a PS3, and my kids GPUs. (Dad, why is Sims 3 running so choppy?).

I guess I might as well take this opportunity to point out that I just passed acidhelm to take the number 1 slot just a few hours later. :-D I can thank peterchen for issuing the challange back last April.

  • House lifting
    R Robert Surtees

I lived in an area with many Victorian style houses. The original houses were single story with a quarter height crawlspace. It was prime real estate so most of the houses were jacked up and turned into two story houses by building a new first floor under the old one. I guess this was cheaper as they didn't have to mess with a new roof. The one behind my house was lifted up with nothing more than small hand jacks, inserting a lattice of railroad ties underneath to hold it up after each step.

By comparison, how many video games are 'unmissable'?

Civilization. I remember when my daughter was in middle school she would always comment on how they were discussing stuff she learned from Civ in her history class. Sad though, she probably got more info from the game than the class.

It's been awhile but as I recall, there is a place to grab some food at the visitors center and a small picnic area. The no-eats rule is for the trails only.

His Mathematical Games column in Scientific American was the best -- one of the reasons I got into the CS field. If you want to get a couple of good books to spark critical thinking in your kids, I'd recommend his Aha! and Gotcha! books.

  • Book recommendations - travelling soon
    R Robert Surtees

A good friend found directions on making a smoke bomb in this (the chapter started with "a little of this will fill up a city block") and decided this would be the perfect ploy for a senior prank. This was back when this sort of activity would get you a firm slap on the wrist instead of life in prison. Anyway, he was mixing up a batch on the stove while his dad was sleeping upstairs and managed to ignite the goo filling the house with smoke. He managed to get to his dad before he called the fire department. Dad was not pleased. :omg:

Over 35 years? Sounds like retirement to me. Also maybe the old dog doesn't want to hassle with learning new tricks and feels someone else may be better suited to lead the company forward.

    R Robert Surtees

Well, it's funny you should ask that, because I've just been reading a great big book about how to put your budgie down, and apparently you can either hit them with the book, or you can shoot them just there, just above the beak.
