Hi there. I work for a university - it's fun, productive, and meaningful work, but I think that has everything to do with the office I'm in and its leadership. I think it's very easy for individual departments to become so focussed on their own functions within the institution that they lose sight of the bigger picture... the right hand not knowing what the left is up to? I can see that as a big challenge for administration in higher ed.

I read whatever mail I get overnight, then read the Lounge, then check the SoapBox, and sometimes, to get the brain started, I do the technical forums as well. Then I move onto a local forum, and then I begin work. I do this regardless of what time I arrive at work, be it 06:30 or 10:30.

I've always gotten good feedback from code reviews both reviewing and getting reviewed, but I've never done a formal 1x1 review. They are a great way to share knowlege as long as all parties are commited. Some things that I've found useful, cut it off after an hour at the longest. Reschedule if you have larger chunks to cover. Don't have a code review unless you have time to make the changes. It's frustrating to make recomendations and then find the original code go straight to production. Make sure all parties have time to look over the code ahead of time. One way to do that is make sure everybody brings their own printouts. As with any development process changes, make sure you can estimate how effective the process is. Not every process works for every group. First of all is that the way PHP started, now its more organized due to more people using it. Linux is alot better now due to more interest. That was my point, this time i will elaborate fully so that people do not need to pick on words. Microsoft is a huge company that probaly spends more omney on advertising thatn these guys do on developing. And that OSS is now more organized and has more funds and stuff, is only cause of MS frustrations. PHP is strogre now but that was not the site i looked 2-3 years when i start to play with php4 (for a project). Back then it was just a site with docs a forum and starting to go commercial. So now that it is more mature, it should be more people using it. I wouldnt expect them to drop developement, do blame me cause i cant keep up to every detail on every project. The point is that MS has more money, more resouces, more organiztion, and still OSS projects get stronger. Honeslty this site is getting to be a little too sensitvie with MS. I feel its becuse you know that their technology is starting to head downward (now thats an understatement). Well, perhaps you should have started with Google! The answer is "yes" you can use an existing search engine for searching your domain, if your domain is open to the public. Google has information about how to do this on its site, under services or some such thing. If you are interested in implementing your own search engine, you can try to implement index services under IIS, or you could buy an appliance that hosts the search function and "plugs in" to your site. This has little to nothing to do with ASP.NET - this requires client-side scripting. ASP.NET is a service that runs on the server. Without fetching a new page, ASP.NET isn't involved (this is the nature of HTTP). You can generate a class that exhibits this behavior by emiting a script that reacts to the 4 radio buttons and uses scripting and CSS styles to show and hide the panels (all of which must be written to the HTML writer) appropriately. Fortunately, Microsoft has already unofficially done this. See the Microsoft IE WebControls at http://www.asp.net/ControlGallery/default.aspx?Category=38&tabindex=2[^].
