Terry O`Nolley wrote: Irony is very specific and is one of the most overused/misused words in language. So much so that I would be surprised if the definition wasn't expanded to include it as a synonym for coincidence some day. And it is, of course, your job to jump in, point this interesting tidbit of information to all and everyone, and not contribute positivly to a topic. Congrats on performing a double-twist-threadjack. What does our contestant win, Bob? Why folks, he wins a lifetime supply of drubbings and lutefisk!

The irony of you arguing about the usage of a word with a big happy smiley face on your sig is ironic in and of itself, and is of no doubt, pure coincidence. As is that nobody but yourself seems to give a damn, while the rest of us just enjoy ourselves at your overbearing expense.

Hmm, you sound like you belong with this fun-loving group of people: Movie Physics I can suspend disbelief with the best of them, but any movie I go to see should have a coherent plot that works within the boundaries of the movie itself. Matrix 1 had this, Matrix 2 did not. If we're going to compare sequels that were differnt from 1 to 2, then Alien and Aleins is a fine example of two very different movies set within the same realm, with each standing alone.

Terry O`Nolley wrote: That would be an example of a coincidence - not irony...... Sorry, no, you're wrong: co·in·ci·dence: the occurrence of events that happen at the same time by accident but seem to have some connection [emp. mine]. iro·ny: usually humorous or sardonic literary style or form characterized by irony. There did not seem to be any connection between talking on a CELL PHONE and driving into a CELL PHONE STORE (that is, one does not give rise to the other). It is, however, IRONIC that the woman did so. If, for example, she was running from the police and crashed the car into the building where Bush was giving a speech, then yes, that could be considered coincidence.

Just assume it's going to suck and have no plot to speak of, much like Matrix 2. That being said, skip it and rent both 2 and 3 when they come out on DVD so at least you can have a chance to figure out what the hell they are trying to show (other than they have "cool special effects" and can't write dialog for their life).

  • New weapon in the war on terror
    T Todd C Wilson

Without RTFA, is this the same as the one where the Israli weapons dude was going to put little bits of bacon in each bullet? Actually, both Hebrew and Islam faiths forbid the consumption of pork or pork products. I suspect that the real reason is that pigs are carriers of parasites that require it to be cooked fully, and doing so without a thermometer (hard to find 2,500+ years ago) meant anyone eating pork wound up really sick, or dead. So it became taboo, and then became Scripture Law. There we go, Todd's Sermon of the Day. Wh00t!

  • Transactions for single table operation
    T Todd C Wilson

Microsoft SQL Server Performance Tuning and Optimization - lots of good tips. In any case, I think you're wrong in that "only operates on one table". You might be confusing the row-level-locking mechanism, which acts as a mutex for the row data. Transactions are the equivilant of try-catch-throw, and provide a nice rollback functionality. However, if you're really worried about performance, batch up the operatations and carry them out inside of a single transaction (this also has other issues of course). You might also want to benchmark with and without on a copy of the database and see what, if any, impact it has. I sounds to me like the "Crazy boss" has had issues in the past where database updating errors were not being caught and the database tables got corrupted.
